The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 4080, 6210, 6280, 6283, 6287 and 6320.  Purcell also said that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 4090, and a crew would be repairing chip and seal on Dent County Road 6180. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2100, 2200, 3080, 3165, 4350, 4353, 5240, 5245 and 5250. Larson also said that brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 3220, 3233 and 3250. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported on the Transportation Advisory Committee meeting that he attended last week. He said that he was updated on the three bridges in Dent County that are to be replaced under the 800 Safe and Sound Bridges Program. The first to be replaced is the bridge across Spring Creek on Highway 32-72 East, which will begin on July 2nd, 2011 and will last approximately 56 days. Then the bridge on State Route NN will be replaced and that will begin on August 30th, 2011 and will last approximately 36 days. The last bridge to be replaced will be the one lane bridge on State Route H and that project will begin in March of 2012 and will last approximately 43 days. Before any work begins a briefing will be held in March of 2011 for the public to gain information and ask questions.  Dent County Collector Dennis Medlock came by the meeting to ask the Commission for a letter stating that it is okay for the collector’s office to continue giving a 2% discount to those who pay their Tourism Tax by the 20th of each month. This has been in place since the collector’s office started collecting the Tourism Tax in 2006 and the state auditor’s office said that it does not need to be an ordinance, just have a letter signed by the Commission on file and they all three agreed to sign the letter. The next meeting of the Commission will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and is open to the public.

An accident occurred June 7th around 1:00 in the afternoon at the intersection of Highway 32 and Pershing Street.  According to the Salem Police report, a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado K3500 driven by Kenneth Prater of St. Maries, was pulling a 16-foot trailer and was traveling westbound on Highway 32 approaching the Pershing Street intersection. Also traveling westbound at that time was a 1999 Dodge Ram driven by Tanya Tucker of Salem. The accident happened when the Dodge Ram was struck from behind by the Chevy Silverado K3500. Prater said he attempted to apply the brakes, but they were unresponsive. Witnesses stated that Prater was traveling too fast and too close before the accident occurred. An injury was reported and that person was transported by private vehicle to the hospital.

The Sellers-Sexton Ford basketball team defended their Senior Olympic state title Friday, June 11, in Columbia, MO.  They went 3-0 for the day and will represent Missouri in the next National Senior Olympic Games. The national tournament will be held August 2011 in Houston, Texas. Members of the team are Larry Sexton, Charles Pace, John Brown, Steve Hauch and Rich Neiman.

Ryan Ludwick hit a three-run homer and knocked in four, and Colby Rasmus added a two-run shot, as the St. Louis Cardinals earned a 9-3 win over the Seattle Mariners in the opener of a three- game interleague series at Busch Stadium. Albert Pujols had a big game with three hits, two walks, an RBI and two runs scored for the Cardinals. Adam Wainwright (9-4) tossed seven-plus innings and improved to 6-0 at home this season. Texas has reportedly turned down an invitation to join the Pac-10, apparently allowing the Big 12 to stay a 10-team league. Texas president Bill Powers has informed Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott Texas' decision to stay with the Big 12. The news will apparently prevent the Big 12's demise, as several days ago it was reported the conference would lose Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State to the Pac-10, while Texas A&M was considering a move to the Southeastern Conference. However Big 12 schools and TV partners met Monday and worked on an arrangement that would persuade the schools to stay in the conference.
