The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. At the meeting District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 536, 538, 602, 637 and 657B. Simpson also said that material would be hauled and grading would be done on Dent County Roads 607, 608, and 661.  District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 213, 214 and on various roads in the Waterfork Area. Tune also said that material would be hauled and grading would be done on Dent County Roads 323A and 614 and a crew would begin rebuilding a section of Dent County Road 221. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that she received a petition from residents of Dent County Roads 428A and B requesting that the Commission post on each road a speed limit sign of 25 mph.  Commissioner Tune said he would meet their request. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 and it is open to the public.

The Annual Water Quality Report for Salem was released and found that no water quality violations occurred in the calendar year of 2006. Copies of the 2006 Annual Water Quality Report can be found at the City of Salem Administrative offices, the Salem Public Library and at the KSMO Radio studios.

The Dent County Sheriff’s Department reports two calls over the last few days. The first call came in on June 11^th at 4:43 p.m. to a residence off of county road #218. The burglary was reported to have occurred sometime between May 31^st and June 3^rd. Reported taken were a chest freezer, paintball guns, Advent television, Jons Red chainsaw, Philips television, electric mini bike, Murray push mower, weightlifting set, a circular saw, bag gloves, a U.S. Navy pocket knife and other items. The incident is under investigation. Another call came in on June 12^th at noon, for animal neglect. The Department received a call from a resident off of Hwy 119, reporting that they heard dogs fighting at 10:30 that morning and saw a pack of about 15 dogs running from the area. The landowner reported their dog was injured and discovered his horse and colt were both dead and partially eaten. The incident is under investigation. The National Park Service (NPS) seeks your review and comment on an environmental assessment (EA) of the Flying W Area on the upper Current River within Ozark National Scenic Riverways. The purpose of this EA is to evaluate the impacts from suggested changes to facilities and use in the area. This document analyzes the impacts associated with three action alternatives and one no-action alternative. The National Park Service is seeking comments on this EA from through July 6th. For more information you can call the Ozark National Scenic Riverways at (573) 323-4236, extension 240, or write to Superintendent, Ozark National Scenic Riverways, P.O. Box 490, Van Buren, MO 63965. Comments must be received no later than July 6, 2007.

Troop I, of the Missouri State Highway Patrol Headquarters in Rolla recorded four traffic fatalities during the month of April 2007. This is three more than April of 2006. The total fatalities for 2007, January through April are 24, which is five more than last year. For April of 2007, Crawford County reported 30 accidents with 14 injuries, while Dent County reported 14 accidents with 10 injuries and one fatality. Laclede County reported 55 accidents with 18 injuries and one fatality while Maries County reported 14 accidents with 10 injuries. Phelps County reported 46 accidents with 10 injuries and one fatality and Pulaski County reported 34 accidents with 12 injuries and one fatality. In the Troop I six-county area there were a total of 193 accidents with 74 injuries and four fatalities for April of 2007 compared to 212 accidents with 118 injuries and one fatality for April of 2006.

Funeral services for Hallie Mae Whitson of Rolla, age 89, will be held Saturday at 10:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be this evening from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Ozark Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Phelps Regional Hospice.

Graveside services for Joseph Elmer Keymann of Steelville, age 84, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Keymann Cemetery in Steelville. Visitation will begin at 10:30 at the cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.

Funeral services for Robert L. Elgin of St. James, age 93, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the James & Gahr Chapel in St. James.  Visitation will be this evening from 5:00 to 7:00.  Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery with Special Military Services.  Memorials are suggested to the Phelps Regional Hospice.
