An accident occurred at 2:15 early Sunday morning in Dent County on Highway 32 about half a mile east of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2005 Pontiac Sunfire driven by 23 year-old Julia Boardman of Licking went off the right side of the roadway, overcorrected, overturned, and went back across the road before coming to rest in the ditch. Boardman suffered serious injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital then by Air Evac to St. Johns in St. Louis. She was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Pontiac Sunfire sustained extensive damages and was removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving theft, and a disturbance. On Monday, June 7th at 7:30 in the morning, an officer was contacted in reference to a theft. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown had taken a rear tine Troy Built tiller valued at $700.00 from the yard of a residence in the 1000 block of East First Street. On Tuesday, June 8th at 8:36 in the morning, an officer was detailed to the 800 block of South Hickory in reference to stealing utilities. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 20-year old Salem male for stealing $24.72 worth of electric and water. He was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. On Wednesday, June 9th at 6:50 in the morning, an officer was dispatched to the area of Hogan and Adams Lane in reference to a disturbance. The investigation of that report led to the arrest of a 17-year old Salem male for disorderly conduct. He was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. On Friday, June 11th at 11:18 in the morning, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown had taken a camera and two lottery tickets valued at $840 from a purse at Stephens Steak House. Anyone with any information regarding the thefts, which are still under investigation, is asked to please contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242. 

An accident occurred at 5:30 Saturday evening in Crawford County on Liberty Road about four miles northeast of Steelville. According to the highway patrol report, a 2004 Ford driven by 28 year-old Kevin Huer of Steelville ran off the right side of the roadway, overcorrected, ran off the left side of the roadway, and struck a tree. Huer suffered serious injuries and was taken to St. Johns Hospital in Springfield by Life Line helicopter. An occupant in the vehicle, 23 year-old Eric Huer of O’Fallon suffered serious injuries and was taken to Missouri hospital in Sullivan by ambulance. Neither were wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Ford was totaled in the accident and removed from the scene by Miles & Sons Towing.

Missouri Insurance Director John M. Huff says seniors who have reached the coverage gap or "doughnut hole" in Medicare Part D will begin receiving rebate checks for $250 next week. These one-time, tax-free checks are the first step in reducing the Medicare prescription drug coverage gap as outlined in the new federal health care reform law. The federal government estimates more than 80,000 Missourians will get a rebate check by the end of this year. Consumers covered under Medicare Part D are automatically eligible to receive a check once they reach the coverage gap. Seniors do not have to buy a new policy or modify their existing one in any way to qualify. Consumers who reach the "doughnut hole" can expect a check within 45 days. Huff also warned that while the checks will bring financial relief, seniors could become a prime target for scam artists. Anyone asking for Medicare, Social Security or bank account numbers in order to receive a check is a scammer, he added. Consumers need to be aware that no one working for the government will ever request personal information before a check can be sent. Consumers can report a scam or verify an agent or company by calling the Insurance Consumer Hotline at 800-726-7390 or visiting insurance.mo.gov.
