The Dent County Commissioners met Thursday at the Dent County Courthouse for their regular meeting. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell stated a work crew would be repairing the stop sign and road sign at the junction of Dent County Roads 5013 and 5015. He also said that chip and seal repairs would be made to county road 5013 and three trucks would be hauling brown rock. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported materials would be added and grading would be done on Dent County Road 2370 while materials would also be added to county road 2380. Larson said grader #31 would be serviced and another crew would be working on the brakes of county truck #110. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported on the Meramec Community Enhancement Committee Board meeting he attended on Tuesday where they elected new officers, and the board approved and granted permission to sign the grant agreement from the Missouri Housing Trust Fund for home repairs to 19 properties in six of the eight counties served by the MCEC. Dent and Crawford County are not served by this fund. Skiles also reported that Governor Jay Nixon has vetoed a number of bills that would affect local government collection of sales or property taxes. The Commission approved the appointment of Ray Walden to serve as a full time committee member of the Transportation Advisory Committee. He replaced former City Administrator Clayton Lucas on the committee. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said her office and the Treasurer’s office balanced on all accounts. Sherry Lea and Liz Gruendel met with the commission about becoming a sustaining partner of the Salem Community Center@the Armory. The founding partners of the original Salem Telecommunication Community Resource Center contribute from $5,000 to $10,000 per year to continue and expand programming offered at the facility and they have picked up four additional local businesses as sustaining partners. Funding for the Salem Community Center operations comes from a combination of participant fees and community donations. Healthy Dent County has been able to secure nearly 1.3 million dollars in grants to renovate the Armory and improve the health of the community in the last two years, and just submitted another $500,000 NAP application for the continued expansion of the center. Lea did say that since Healthy Dent County took over the TCRC from the University of Missouri and absorbed the Salem Fitness Center from the Dent County Health Center, they have employed nine additional people. Commissioner Skiles says he supports the efforts of Healthy Dent County, but the Missouri Constitution does not allow governments to simply make donations to organizations. There would need to be a legal contract that shows how the Salem Community Center is providing a direct and legitimate service to the county and that would have to be approved by the county legal counsel before the commission could even consider the request. Later, the commissioners heard two bids for new election equipment. The first bid was from Elkins-Swyers, Company, Inc. from Springfield for ten voting machines that includes the hardware and software for $68,800. The second bid came from Henry M. Adkins & Sons, Inc. out of Clinton, Missouri and their bid for 10 voting machines including the hardware and software was $57,620. There is an annual maintenance charge by both companies, and both could also offer long-term lease agreements if desired. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley told the commissioners she would like to review the bids and make a recommendation on Monday. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.
