An accident occurred at 12:25 Friday afternoon in Dent County on Route E five miles north of Montauk State Park. According to the highway patrol report, a 1999 KIA Sephia driven by 59-year-old Linda Holubeck of Salem, was traveling east on Route E. The accident occurred as Holubeck attempted to avoid an animal in the roadway. The vehicle ran off the right side of the roadway and struck a tree. Suffering moderate injuries in the accident was a passenger in the vehicle, 63-year old Herb Holubeck of Salem. He was flown to Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis by Air EVAC. The driver, Linda Holubeck and another passenger in the vehicle, 16-year old Brittany Collins of Salem, suffered minor injuries. Holubeck was taken to Salem Memorial District Hospital by Salem EMS while Collins was taken to Salem Memorial District Hospital by a private vehicle. Everyone involved was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The KIA sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by Whitakers Towing of Salem.

An accident occurred at 1:00 Saturday afternoon in Dent County on Highway 19 about ten miles north of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2002 Harley Davidson driven by 56-year-old Billy Birdsong of Newburg was traveling south on Highway 19. The accident occurred as the vehicle ran off the right side of the roadway and overturned in the ditch. Birdsong suffered moderate injuries and was transported to Salem Memorial District Hospital by Salem Ambulance. Birdsong was wearing a safety device at the time of the accident. The Harley Davidson sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by private means.

An accident occurred at 2:40 Saturday afternoon in Laclede County on I-44 about twelve miles west of Lebanon. According to the highway patrol report, a 2001 Hyundai driven by 22-year old Mason Heavin of Edgar Springs, attempted to change from the driving lane to the passing lane and struck a 2000 Jeep Cherokee driven by 23 year-old Virginia Loftin of Springfield. Both vehicles then traveled off the left side of the roadway, where the Jeep struck the median cable and overturned. Loftin suffered moderate injuries and was transported to the St. John’s Hospital in Springfield. Heavin was the only one wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Hyundai sustained minor damage and was driven from the scene. The Jeep was totaled in the accident and was removed from the scene by Steve’s Towing.

The Salem Police Department has released several reports. On Wednesday, June 1^st at 5:51 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 1400 block of South Gertrude Street in reference to a theft. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown took a nine-shot .22 caliber pistol valued at $200. Later that night at 10:57, an officer was dispatched to the 700 block of East Center Street in reference to a disturbance. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 43-year old male of Salem for disorderly conduct. He was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. On Thursday, June 2^nd at 7:27 at night, an officer was contacted in reference to the theft of fuel from Casey’s General Store. The investigation of the report revealed that the driver of a green extended cab Chevrolet truck pumped $58 in fuel and left without paying. On Friday, June 3^rd at 4:00 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to the City of Salem Administrative Office in reference to a counterfeit bill. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown passed a counterfeit twenty-dollar bill. On Saturday, June 4^th at 8:15 in the morning, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to identity theft. That investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown used a Missouri Access Card number of another in the amount of $246.69. On Sunday, June 5^th at 2:39 in the morning, an officer was detailed to the 800 block of East First Street in reference to a vehicle fire. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown attempted to set a truck on fire by igniting accelerants in the bed of the truck. The fire was put out with minimal damage. Later that afternoon at 1:22, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 100 block of North Rhodes Street in reference to a juvenile with no place to go. The investigation of the report revealed that the legal guardian of a 13-year old juvenile forced the juvenile to leave the residence and they were unattended for a matter of days. The suspect, a 66-year old female of Salem, was taken into custody and charged with endangering the welfare of a child. She was issued a summons to appear in court and the juvenile was placed in foster care. On Monday, June 6^th at 7:24 at night, an officer was dispatched to the 1800 block of South Oak Street in reference to the theft of money. That investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown withdrew $100 from the ATM account of another without permission.  On Wednesday, June 8^th at 2:09 in the morning, a 46-year old male of Potosi was transported to the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center in lieu of a mental commitment order. Later that morning at 4:00, an officer was detailed to the 1200 block of South Jackson Street in reference to the theft from a vehicle. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown entered a 1999 Pontiac Firebird and a 1998 Jeep and took cash and items valued at $705. Later on that morning at 9:10, an officer was dispatched to the 1200 block of South Macarthur Street in reference to a theft from a vehicle. That investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown took tools valued at $700 from a truck. The City of Salem Finance Committee will hold a meeting, called by Director of Public Works & Engineering Bill Huffman, on Tuesday, June 14^th at the City Hall Council Chambers beginning at 2:00 pm. The meeting will be held for the consideration of the 2011/2012 budget. The meeting of the City of Salem Finance Committee is open to the public.

Prince Fielder's two-run homer highlighted a four-run sixth inning, as the Milwaukee Brewers downed the St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 to complete a three-game sweep and claim sole possession of first place in the NL Central. Colby Rasmus went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Skip Schumaker added a pair of RBI for the Cardinals, who have dropped four of five. Jake Westbrook (6-4) allowed four runs on eight hits and one walk over five- plus innings to suffer the loss. The Cards will be off today before playing Washington on Tuesday.

On Sunday, the Cardinals placed outfielder Allen Craig on the 15-day disabled list with a right knee contusion and purchased the contract of Andrew Brown from Triple-A Memphis.

Vin Mazzaro threw a five-hit, seven-inning gem and the Royals' offense bludgeoned the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim with a 13-hit attack to take the rubber match at Angel Stadium by a 9-0 score. Mazzaro (1-1) also walked five hitters en route to his first win of 2011. Alex Gordon collected three hits and knocked in a pair while Billy Butler and Chris Getz each added two RBI for the Royals, who bounced back after dropping a 7-5 result to LA on Saturday. Kansas City will have the day off today.

Jack Clark Day at the Ballpark has been rescheduled for Sunday, June 26^th at the Salem City Park. Registration is FREE for boys who are 8–15 years old. Forms are available at the Bank of Salem and at James and Gahr Mortuary. Boys age 8-12 will be able to participate in a clinic from 2:00 to 3:30 pm and boys age 13-15 the clinic will be held from 3:30 to 5:00 pm.
