The Salem Police Department released more of their reports. On Wednesday, May 29
th at 4:13 in the afternoon, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of a 19-year old Salem male for possession of Opium. He was released pending lab results and application for a warrant. On Monday, June 3
rd at 7:56 in the evening, an officer was dispatched to Burger King in reference to property damage. The investigation revealed that someone broke the windshield, valued at $250, of a maroon 1997 Ford truck that was parked in the lot. At 10:30 that same night, an officer was dispatched to the 800 block of East Fourth in reference a juvenile trying to break streetlights and damage property in yards. That investigation led to the arrest of a 15-year old male juvenile for disorderly conduct. He was released to his parents and the report will be forwarded to the Juvenile Office for review. Then at 11:00 that same night, a 24-year old Lenox female was transported to the Ozark Medical Center in West Plains in lieu of a mental commitment order. On Tuesday, June 4
th at 12:31 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 400 block of Hogan & Adam Lane in reference to a burglary. The investigation revealed that someone entered a residence and took CD’s, a CD player, and jewelry valued at $1,500. Later that evening at 6:46, an officer was dispatched to the 700 block of North Jackson in reference to damage to a vehicle. That investigation led to the arrest of a 24-year old Salem male for property damage and tampering with a motor vehicle. He was incarcerated pending the application for warrants. Then at 6:55 that same night, an officer was dispatched to a disturbance in the 700 block of North Jackson. The investigation led to the arrest of a 46-year old Salem male for disorderly conduct. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is asking anglers whom fish select Ozark streams to help with a research project by reporting their catches of tagged smallmouth bass. One of Missouri’s most popular game fish, smallmouth bass are found predominantly in cool, clear streams and large reservoirs in the Ozarks. Bass season for Ozark streams runs from May 25th through February 28th of 2014. MDC fisheries biologists are using information from the research project help manage bass habitat and harvest. This is the second and final year of the tagging effort, which involves MDC staff catching and tagging wild smallmouth bass to learn more about angler catch rates and fish movement in the Black River, Castor River, Courtois Creek, Current River and the North Fork of the White River. Anglers are encouraged to report tagged smallmouth bass they catch in these waters. Each tag has a phone number printed on it. Anglers are asked to call the phone number listed on the tag and provide the following information: tag number, date of catch, length of bass, approximate location of the catch, and if the fish was kept or released. MDC also conducted a mail survey of approximately 7,200 bass anglers from around the state in 2010 to gather their attitudes and opinions, and estimated efforts spent fishing for bass in Missouri streams. More than 4,000 anglers responded. Results of the survey showed that anglers fished Missouri Ozark streams for smallmouth bass most often, followed by largemouth bass and rock bass. Wade/bank fishing was the most popular fishing method reported followed by float fishing. Jet boat fishing was the method least used. Most anglers reported taking multiple trips per year to fish for smallmouth bass, with 10 trips being the average. Most anglers reported catching multiple smallmouth bass per trip, with an average catch of seven per trip. Anglers also reported keeping an average of two smallmouth bass per trip. Anglers also provided more than 8,000 individual responses to what threatens the quality of Missouri stream fishing. Nearly half of all anglers responding cited pollution. Colonel Ron Replogle, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, announces results of the Motor Vehicle Inspection's 2013 school bus inspection program. A total of 11,890 school buses were inspected between the dates of February 4th and April 30th. Inspectors approved 88.3% of all buses during their initial inspection. Statewide results for 2013 were: 10,493 buses that received an approval upon initial inspection; 1,153 buses were deemed defective upon initial inspection and 244 buses were placed out-of-service upon initial inspection. Buses with one or more major defective items deemed to be unsafe for the transport of students are rated as "out-of-service." Buses rated as "defective" may continue to be operated for the purpose of pupil transportation until repair is made. School districts are allowed 10 days following initial inspection to repair identified defects before being re-inspected by Highway Patrol motor vehicle inspection personnel. Buses placed out-of-service by inspectors must be repaired, then re-inspected and placed back into service by Highway Patrol motor vehicle inspection personnel prior to being used for the transportation of students. A total of 292 Missouri school districts earned the distinction of Total Fleet Excellence, which is awarded to districts earning an approval rating of 90% or higher with no buses placed out-of-service. During the 2013-2014 school year, buses in award-winning fleets may display the Total Fleet Excellence sticker in the lower corner of the first window on the passenger-entry side of the bus. In addition, each district earning Total Fleet Excellence designation receives a certificate from the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
The rescheduled date for the Water Conservation and Organic Pest Control workshop at the Salem Community Garden will be Thursday, June 13th at 6:30 p.m. New MU Extension Horticulture Specialist Patrick Greenwald will share tips and techniques for efficiently watering your garden and organic methods to control squash bugs and Japanese beetles. The Salem Community Garden is located at the Salem United Methodist Church at the corner of Highway 32 and Doss Road. Everyone is welcome to attend and there is no cost for this program. The Missouri Pesticide Collection Program, a free event for farmers and households, will be held on Saturday, June 15th at the City of Salem Sewer and Water Construction Yard located at 3rd and Grand Streets in Salem from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. This collection is for outdated or unwanted fungicides, herbicides, insecticides, pesticides, fertilizers containing herbicides or pesticides, rodenticides, dewormers, or fly tags. Allen Craig capped a five-run fifth inning with a three-run homer, David Freese extended his hitting streak to 20 games and Michael Wacha earned his first major league victory in the St. Louis Cardinals' 9-2 thrashing of the New York Mets at Citi Field. Freese had two hits in extending the majors' longest active hitting streak and Craig went 2-for-4 with his fifth homer of the season, paving the way to St. Louis' major league-leading 42nd win of the year and fourth in five games. The Cardinals and Mets will play again tonight and you can hear it on KSMO Radio starting at 5:35.
Victor Martinez's tie-breaking sacrifice fly in the eighth inning vaulted Max Scherzer to his ninth victory and the Detroit Tigers to a 3-2 decision over the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday. Kansas City managed just three hits against the unbeaten Scherzer. Wade Davis turned in his longest outing in 10 starts, tossing 6 2/3 innings of two-run ball on eight hits while striking out five in the loss. He earned a no decision and is winless in nine of his last 10 outings. The Royals and Tigers will play again today at 2:10.

Memorial visitation for Dawn Michele Cardillo of Steelville, age 47, will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 Saturday at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.
