The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. At the meeting Commissioners Bobby Simpson and J.J. Tune both reported that conditions are too wet for grading. Simpson said that District 1 crews would be checking roads for washouts and debris and also checking road signs. Routine grading will begin in District 1 once roads dry out. Tune said that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 528 and the rest of the District 2 crew would be checking road signs and changing tires on dump trucks. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that she attended the Chamber of Commerce’s Website Committee Meeting Friday and she is in charge of getting an elected official’s directory together that will be placed on the website. The next meeting of the Commission will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.
According to the Salem Police Department, they will be conducting unannounced random sobriety checkpoints throughout the month in June within the city limits of Salem.
An accident occurred Thursday afternoon at 12:46 in Salem on Washington Street. According to the Salem Police report, 51-year old Elaine Kropp of Salem was walking across Washington Street from the newspaper office to get into a white 2000 Plymouth Neon driven by Carolyn Bunch of Salem that was parked on Washington Street facing south. A 1994 teal green Mercury Topaz driven by Connie Woolf of Salem was traveling south on Washington Street. Woolf forgot to put the car in park and the Topaz started rolling and trapped Kropp between the bumpers. Kropp suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial Hospital for treatment. Both vehicles sustained no damage.
Captain Randy Becker, commanding officer of Troop I, announces that sometime during the month of June, troopers assigned to Troop I will participate in a special enforcement operation that will target drivers committing hazardous moving violations. This particular operation will be conducted in Crawford County and will target violations that commonly cause traffic crashes. Statistics show that inattention is a contributing factor in many traffic crashes. Vehicles being driven by individuals who are not paying attention may cross the centerline and travel into the path of an oncoming vehicle. In other situations, inattention will result in drivers allowing their vehicle to travel off the highway. If not careful, these drivers will overcorrect as they attempt to steer back onto the road, which may also result in a traffic crash. The troopers involved in this operation will target all violations, including speeding and driving while intoxicated, which may result in a traffic crash.
The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce will hold their June membership meeting on Wednesday, June 13th at noon at the Salem TCRC. State Representative Jason Smith will be the speaker, and Huckleberry’s Diner will be catering lunch. Lunch is $7.00. Please RSVP the Chamber if you plan to attend and be included for lunch. The next Teacher Hall of Fame is set for the 2008 Dent County All-School Reunion. The Dent County 4-H Summer Jr. Leadership Program will be held for six-weeks on Thursday evenings beginning June 14th and lasting through July 29th, from 6:30 to 8:30 at the Commons Youth Building. Former 11-year Dent County 4-H’er and now our county summer work student, Krystal Sims will be conducting the Jr. Leadership Club for 4-H’ers, age 12-14. St. John’s opened the doors on its “We Care Clinic” over a month ago bringing health services to the uninsured and working poor. The “We Care Clinic” will be open from 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM. Tuesdays at 1601 N. Bishop, Rolla, to provide services to “Hard-working people who just can’t afford health care.” The primary focus of the “We Care Clinic” will be providing education and help to individuals managing chronic diseases, such as diabetes and congestive heart failure. In recent years, St. John’s physicians have seen a decrease in office visits by patients managing chronic diseases because many are no longer able to afford regular, preventative health care. The goal of the “We Care Clinic” is to offer these services at absolutely no charge to those without insurance, Medicaid, Medicare and the working poor with high-deductible health plans. St. John’s has a grant-funded medication access program to help patients access free medications provided by pharmaceutical companies and also has partnered with Roche Diagnostics, St. John’s lab services provider, to offer free lab services. The clinic will coordinate and refer patients seeking treatment for non-chronic diseases to other community resources, such as the Phelps/Maries County Health Department’s Community Care Clinic and Mental Health Clinic. The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce announces the annual Independence Day Parade will take place on July 4, 2007 at 5:00 pm. The parade theme is “A Star Spangled Celebration”. Military personnel will serve as the Grand Marshals. The Chamber asks everyone planning to participate in the event to enter by Wednesday, June 27th. Entry forms are available at the Chamber office, and can be filled out in the office or called in at 573-729-6900. The Chamber will award $100 to a commercial and non-commercial entry.
