Caution local domestic cat owners! A tick-borne disease spread from the American Dog Tick has infected at least nine domestic cats in the immediate area and eight of them have died. The disease is cytauxzoonosis and it is 95% fatal without treatment and still 40% with treatment. If you are a cat owner at this time, it is highly recommended you keep your cat inside to prevent tick exposure. The pathogen lies dormant in wild cats, but it becomes extremely active in domestic cats. Symptoms usually occur within the first six days of infection. The symptoms include depression, lethargy, anorexia, dehydration, fever and enlarged lymph nodes. If your cat gets sick, get it to the animal veterinarian as quickly as possible as early treatment is key to any successful treatment.
