An accident occurred at 6:44 Monday evening in Crawford County that took the life of a Cuba man. According to the highway patrol report, 70-year old Jimmie Hughes of Cuba was brush hogging field on private property on Birds Nest Road south of Cuba. The tractor then struck a small tree, causing it to overturn onto Hughes. The Crawford County Coroner, Paul Hutson, pronounced him dead at the scene and his body was taken to the Mizell Funeral Home in Cuba. The tractor sustained minor damage and was removed from the scene by Miles Towing.

The Dent County Commissioners gathered Monday morning for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse. Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams reported that the sales tax dollars receipts from January through June in 2013 are $9,872.92 less than for the first six months of 2012. The money received in June 2013 is about $1,600 more than for June of 2012. The commissioners approved the budgeted quarterly transfer from the Senior Citizens Fund in the amount of $18,625. Kenneth Beck was in attendance and asked Commissioner Larson about the potholes on Dent County Road 3260. Larson stated that a man was going to Springfield to get oil Monday for the Dura-Patcher and repairs should be made to that road starting today. Beck also stated that all but two of the speed limit signs on that road are gone and Larson indicated that he would have the road crew check that out. In the road reports, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that brush was going to be cut on Dent County Road 6510, materials were going to be added to county road 6633 and that workers would be addressing some washouts on Dent County Road 5450. Purcell said that patch grading would be done where some washouts occurred or have been reported, two men would be putting up road signs, another man would be hauling brown rock and that the pipes at the Ashley Creek Bridge would be cleaned out. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson stated that grading was going to be done on Dent County Road 2150, and that a driveway pipe was being installed on Dent County Road 3140 with grading to follow. He also stated that materials were going to be added to Dent County Road 4290 before it is patch graded. Larson said that the commission is currently working on the paper work for the construction of a bridge on Dent County Road 3210 also known as the Hospital Road. The commission approved sending out the Statement for Qualifications to engineering firms for designing the new bridge that will be due back to the commissioners on July 12^th at 4:30. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that she and the treasurer balanced on all accounts for the month of May. She also indicated that her office along with the Dent County Collector and Assessor balanced on all additions and add-ons approved by the commissioners. At the last meeting, Deputy Wayne Becker discussed with the commission a grant that the Sheriff’s Department will be receiving for radio equipment in the amount of $12,969. Sheriff Rick Stallings also came to the meeting to discuss buying new headsets for the radios for the dispatchers. The cost was expected to be between $1,600 and $1,700 and would come out of the 9-1-1 Fund. The commissioners approved the request to purchase the headsets. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held Thursday morning at 9:00 at the Dent County Courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The City of Salem’s Finance Committee will hold a budget meeting, called by City Administrator Clayton Lucas, tonight at 6:00 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers located at 202 North Washington. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the budget FYE 2013-2014. This budget meeting is open to the public.

An accident occurred at 4:05 Monday afternoon in Dent County on Highway 72 about a mile south of Route C north of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, 53-year old Timothy Tracy of Salem was riding a 2004 Harley Davison when it traveled off the right side of the roadway and overturned. Tracy suffered serious injuries and was flown to Barnes-Jewish in St. Louis. He was wearing a safety device at the time of the accident. The Harley sustained moderate damage and was removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

An accident happened Sunday afternoon at 12:30 in Crawford County on Highway 19 about three miles south of Steelville. According to the highway patrol report, a 1998 Dodge Dakota Pickup driven by 17-year old Shawn Ryerson of Cherryville, began to hydroplane on wet pavement. The Dodge ran off the right side of the roadway, struck an embankment and overturned. Ryerson suffered minor injuries and sought his own treatment. The Dodge was totaled and removed by the owner.

The rescheduled date for the Water Conservation and Organic Pest Control workshop at the Salem Community Garden will be Thursday, June 13^th at 6:30 p.m.  New MU Extension Horticulture Specialist Patrick Greenwald will share tips and techniques for efficiently watering your garden and organic methods to control squash bugs and Japanese beetles.  The Salem Community Garden is located at the Salem United Methodist Church at the corner of Highway 32 and Doss Road.  Everyone is welcome to attend and there is no cost for this program. The Missouri Pesticide Collection Program, a free event for farmers and households, will be held on Saturday, June 15^th at the City of Salem Sewer and Water Construction Yard located at 3^rd and Grand Streets in Salem from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. This collection is for outdated or unwanted fungicides, herbicides, insecticides, pesticides, fertilizers containing herbicides or pesticides, rodenticides, dewormers, or fly tags. Lorenzo Cain's RBI single capped a three- run third inning and proved to be the difference in the Kansas City Royals' 3-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers Monday in the opener of a three-game set at Kauffman Stadium. The Royals did all their damage in the decisive third frame, with Salvador Perez plating a pair of runs with a triple before scoring on Cain's base hit to provide just enough run support for starter Jeremy Guthrie. Guthrie (7-3) limited the potent Tigers lineup to two runs on six hits and three walks over 6 1/3 frames to help the Royals, who will play the Tigers again tonight at 7:10.

Visitation for Albert T. Holt of Rolla, age 89, will be held Friday from 2:00 to 4:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.

Funeral services for Charles Junior Reed of Rolla, age 76, are incomplete. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
