The Salem Police Department released their report for the month of May. During the month, they wrote nine equipment repair orders, 26 summons to appear in court, 20 warning tickets, and 33 traffic tickets. The Salem Police Department investigated 10 accidents, one report of armed criminal action, eight assaults, two burglaries, four reports of disorderly conduct, four reports of domestic assaults, one report of domestic violence, two reports of driving while intoxicated, one report of driving while revoked, three reports of endangering the welfare of a child, two reports of felonious restraint, one report of forgery, one report of identity theft, and one report of littering. The department also investigated two reports of a missing and or runaway juvenile, one report for an open container, one report of a peace disturbance, four reports of property damage, three reports of refusal to obey a lawful order, two reports of resisting and/or interfering with arrest, 14 reports of stealing, three reports of trespassing, one report of unlawful possession of a firearm, one report of unlawful use of a weapon and four 96-hour commitments. They also investigated one report of possession of amphetamine, one report of possession of marijuana, one report of possession of opium or derivative, one report of drug paraphernalia one report of distributing/delivering/manufacturing /producing a controlled substance. The Salem Police Department conducted one death investigation during the month of May. The police department received 1,988 calls for service during the month, handled 170 walk-ins to the station, and redirected 79 calls to the animal control officer. They spent 12 hours in court testifying, four hours as court bailiff and spent four hours teaching D.A.R.E. The calls in May included 36 calls for escorts, six calls for an intoxicated driver, five calls for a prowler, one call for a suspicious person and/or vehicle, three intoxicated pedestrian calls, six calls for domestic disputes, and one call for property damage. There were two 911 calls, five calls for a peace disturbance, six calls for alarms sounding, seven calls for fights in progress, 15 ambulance assist calls, two fire calls and six wreckers. The Salem Police Department drove a total of 8,472 miles and arrested 24 males and 18 females during the month of May.

Bill Black, Superintendent at Fort Smith National Historic Site in Arkansas, has been selected as the new Superintendent at Ozark National Scenic Riverways in Van Buren. Black served in an acting capacity in the position for 4 months earlier this year, and takes the position permanently in mid-summer. In announcing Black’s selection, National Park Service (NPS) Midwest Regional Director Michael T. Reynolds stated that the depth and breadth of Bill’s experience both within and outside the National Park Service, coupled with his intuitive understanding of building lasting relationships and partnerships with local, regional, and national communities, organizations, and groups, makes him an ideal choice to lead Ozark National Scenic Riverways. Having served as the acting Superintendent at the park, he has had the fortune to meet many of the partners and local people that have a special interest in Ozark National Scenic Riverways. The Ozark National Scenic Riverways was established as the first National Scenic River in June 1972. Ozark culture is preserved throughout the area.

The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce and the City of Salem invites businesses, organizations, and individuals to participate in the community’s 2012 4^th of July parade on Wednesday, July 4^th.  This year’s theme is “America’s Past, Present and Future” and it will start at 6:00 PM. The Grand Marshall this year is Ed Gill, a lifelong Salem resident and businessman, who achieved the rank of Lieutenant Senior Grade in the United States Navy. Gill served aboard a minesweeper during the Invasion of Normandy in WWII. A one hundred dollar prize will be awarded to the best “Commercial” and “Non-Commercial” float.
