The Salem Police Department released their report for the month of May. During the month, they wrote nine equipment repair orders, 26 summons to appear in court, 20 warning tickets, and 33 traffic tickets. The Salem Police Department investigated 10 accidents, one report of armed criminal action, eight assaults, two burglaries, four reports of disorderly conduct, four reports of domestic assaults, one report of domestic violence, two reports of driving while intoxicated, one report of driving while revoked, three reports of endangering the welfare of a child, two reports of felonious restraint, one report of forgery, one report of identity theft, and one report of littering. The department also investigated two reports of a missing and or runaway juvenile, one report for an open container, one report of a peace disturbance, four reports of property damage, three reports of refusal to obey a lawful order, two reports of resisting and/or interfering with arrest, 14 reports of stealing, three reports of trespassing, one report of unlawful possession of a firearm, one report of unlawful use of a weapon and four 96-hour commitments. They also investigated one report of possession of amphetamine, one report of possession of marijuana, one report of possession of opium or derivative, one report of drug paraphernalia one report of distributing/delivering/manufacturing /producing a controlled substance. The Salem Police Department conducted one death investigation during the month of May. The police department received 1,988 calls for service during the month, handled 170 walk-ins to the station, and redirected 79 calls to the animal control officer. They spent 12 hours in court testifying, four hours as court bailiff and spent four hours teaching D.A.R.E. The calls in May included 36 calls for escorts, six calls for an intoxicated driver, five calls for a prowler, one call for a suspicious person and/or vehicle, three intoxicated pedestrian calls, six calls for domestic disputes, and one call for property damage. There were two 911 calls, five calls for a peace disturbance, six calls for alarms sounding, seven calls for fights in progress, 15 ambulance assist calls, two fire calls and six wreckers. The Salem Police Department drove a total of 8,472 miles and arrested 24 males and 18 females during the month of May.

Bill Black, Superintendent at Fort Smith National Historic Site in Arkansas, has been selected as the new Superintendent at Ozark National Scenic Riverways in Van Buren. Black served in an acting capacity in the position for 4 months earlier this year, and takes the position permanently in mid-summer. In announcing Black’s selection, National Park Service (NPS) Midwest Regional Director Michael T. Reynolds stated that the depth and breadth of Bill’s experience both within and outside the National Park Service, coupled with his intuitive understanding of building lasting relationships and partnerships with local, regional, and national communities, organizations, and groups, makes him an ideal choice to lead Ozark National Scenic Riverways. Having served as the acting Superintendent at the park, he has had the fortune to meet many of the partners and local people that have a special interest in Ozark National Scenic Riverways. The Ozark National Scenic Riverways was established as the first National Scenic River in June 1972. Ozark culture is preserved throughout the area.

The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce and the City of Salem invites businesses, organizations, and individuals to participate in the community’s 2012 4th of July parade on Wednesday, July 4th.  This year’s theme is “America’s Past, Present and Future” and it will start at 6:00 PM. The Grand Marshall this year is Ed Gill, a lifelong Salem resident and businessman, who achieved the rank of Lieutenant Senior Grade in the United States Navy. Gill served aboard a minesweeper during the Invasion of Normandy in WWII. A one hundred dollar prize will be awarded to the best “Commercial” and “Non-Commercial” float. The Sellers-Sexton men’s basketball team has qualified for a chance to defend their national championship title in the 2013 National Senior Olympic Games to be held in Cleveland, Ohio. On Friday, they defended their Missouri Championship in Columbia. The team consists of John Brown, Joe Brickner, Larry Sexton, Charles Pace, Steve Hauck, and Randy Knoll.

Jason Kipnis crushed a go-ahead three-run homer in the top of the ninth inning to help the Indians take a 4-1 victory over the Cardinals in the finale of a three-game interleague set. Joe Kelly was impressive in his Major League debut, allowing just one run on seven hits and one walk with four strikeouts over five-plus frames for the Cardinals. Carlos Beltran accounted for the only St. Louis run with a solo homer in the first as the Cardinals dropped two-of-three. The Cardinals have the day off today.

Andrew McCutchen's three RBI powered the Pirates to a 3-2 win over the Royals, finishing off a three-game sweep. Bruce Chen (5-6) gave up all three runs in five innings on four hits and a walk and Alex Gordon delivered the Royals' first hit in the sixth inning and finished 2-for-5 with a run scored. The Royals have the day off.

The St. Louis Cardinals have placed left-handed pitcher Jaime Garcia on the 15-day disabled list and recalled right-handed pitcher Fernando Salas from Triple-A Memphis.

Funeral services for David Shelton of Salem, age 75, will be held today at 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be from 11:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the New Hope Cemetery in Salem. Memorials may be made to the Shelton family.

Funeral services for Wilma G. James of Vichy, age 93, will be held Tuesday at 10:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be today from 3:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Walker Cemetery in Vichy. Memorials may be made to the Walker or Snodgrass Cemetery.

Funeral services for Lou Torbit Ziske of Magnolia Springs, Alabama and formerly of Salem, age 79, will be held Tuesday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Dent County Museum. 

Funeral services for Gideon Lee Pilkington of Salem, age 37, will be held Tuesday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Round Pond Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Round Pond Cemetery.

Funeral services for Robert Earl “Bo” Starkey of Doolittle and formerly of Salem, age 45, will be held Tuesday at 3:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Tuesday from 1:00 to 3:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association.

Funeral services for Zachary Adam Tredway of Bunker, age 12, will be held Thursday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held from 11:00 AM until service time Thursday. Interment will be in the West Fork-Sutterfield Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Zach Tredway Memorial Fund at the Bank of Salem.
