Dent County Relay For Life will be held this weekend in the Salem City Park starting at 7:00 Friday night and lasting until 7:00 Saturday morning. A total of 15 teams will have booths to sell items in order to raise money that will go toward the fight against cancer and the goal this year is to raise $25,000. Activities will take place all night long including music by Iron Mountain Bluegrass as well as other local bands performing. There will be a silent auction and you won’t want to miss the crowning of the “Queen of the Relay”. The Dent County Fire Protection District held their Board of Directors meeting on Tuesday, June 3rd. In district training (which is now required of all Board members,) the board learned that they should be specific that the minutes are not officially approved from their meetings until the Secretary signs them and they are presented at the next meeting. A total of 25 calls were completed in May and year-to-date a total of 189 calls have been made. Of the total calls, 33.9 % were ambulance assists and motor vehicle accidents, 14.3 % were structure fires and 12.7 % were brush fires. In old business, it was noted that a fuel tax refund cannot be recovered for the past years, and bids for insurance were in with VFIS quoting $14,504 and Fire Pak quoted $10,684. The insurance is a complete package to cover all equipment, liability, accident, crime, bonding and property.  Fire Pak had the best liability coverage of the bidders. In new business, the chief’s evaluation has started and evaluations are being turned in, and a note was made that the chief’s pay evaluation is due in July. Chief Nash reported that Firefighter I & II testing has been competed with all four firefighters tested having passed. Nash reported that a quote from Seal Coating Inc was submitted to resurface the parking lot, but the Board decided to take no action at this time. Nash also asked that the CAUTION sign in front of the station be removed to allow for better access and a better look for the District and the Board confirmed his request. The next meeting of the Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Director’s will be held on Tuesday, July 1st at the District building beginning at 6:00.

The City of Salem Finance Committee will hold a meeting, called by Mayor Gary Brown today beginning at 1:00 in the afternoon at the City Hall Council Chambers, for the consideration of the 2008/2009 budget. The meeting of the City of Salem Finance Committee is open to the public.

Need something fun, yet educational for the kids to be involved in? The Ozark Kids Connection (OK) is a brand new program funded for 2008 by the L-A-D and Ozark Natural Resources Foundations. The program will be administered through the Bonebrake Center of Nature and History in Salem. The vision of the OK program is to connect kids in grade levels K-5 with the nature and history of the Ozarks through a variety of interactive hands-on learning experiences. Participants will be given the opportunity to fulfill requirements for a program award and decorative patch. Dates are Saturday, June 14th and Saturday, July 12th, both from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Ryan Ludwick went 4-for-5 with a solo home run and four RBI as the St. Louis Cardinals downed the Cincinnati Reds, 7-2, in the opener of a three-game set at Great American Ball Park. Albert Pujols hit a two-run homer, but left in the seventh inning with a strained left calf, while Rick Ankiel also hit a solo homer for the Cardinals, who have won three straight. Mitchell Boggs (1-0) got the first win of his career as he went five innings and gave up two runs on four hits.  St. Louis has won three of four against the Reds this season. Pujols will be examined today in St. Louis to evaluated his calf. Brandon Ryan finished the game 2-for-3 with a walk and three runs scored. The Cardinals and Reds will play again tonight starting at 5:50 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

Before the game last night, the Cardinals placed pitcher Adam Wainwright on the 15- disabled list with a sprained middle finger in his pitching hand.

St. Louis Cardinals have signed 30 of their recent amateur draft picks including pitchers Michael Lynn, Eric Fornataro, Anthony Ferrara, Miguel Flores, Joshua Hester, Jonny Bravo, Zachary Pitts, Jason Buursma, George Brown, Matthew Frevert, Samuel Freeman, Kevin Thomas, Chris Notti, Daniel Richardson, Santo Maertz and Adam Veres, outfielders Shane Peterson, Devin Shepherd, Christopher Swauger, Paul Cruz and Joe Babick, third baseman Jermaine Curtis, second baseman Alejandro Castellanos and Brett Lilley, catchers Charles Cutler, Jack Cawley and Blake Murphy, shortstop Luis Mateo and first baseman Matt Rigoli and Curt Smith.

Ian Kinsler doubled and scored the winning run in the top of the ninth, as the Texas Rangers used a four-run eighth to comeback and beat the Kansas City Royals, 6-5, in the opener of a three-game set. Jose Guillen went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored for Kansas City, which dropped the third of its last four contests. Alex Gordon had a solo home run and John Buck had two hits and an RBI. Gil Meche started for the Royals and lasted six frames, yielding a run on four hits. Yasuhiko Yabuta (1-1) was credited with the loss as he gave up an unearned run on three hits in 2/3 of an inning. The Royals and Rangers will play again tonight.
