UPDATED NEWS!!! The Salem Police Department received a call this morning at 6:50 concerning an incident at 307 East 2nd Street. Upon arrival, the Salem Police Department found the body of a 21-year old white female and contacted Dent County Coroner Gina White. The subject was identified as Andrea Ray of Salem, and Dent County Coroner White pronounced Ray dead at the scene at 7:07 am. The scene is being handled as a suspicious death by the Salem Police Department. Dent County Coroner Gina White sent the body by Burnett Courier and Transport LLC to Kansas City for an autopsy to be performed by Dr. Friedlander with Parcells Forensic Pathology Group, PA., to determine the actual cause of death. A warrant has been issued charging Jesse Berry of Salem with 1st Degree Murder with no bond set.
The Dent County Relay for Life event will start this Friday at 6:00 in the evening and will run through 6:00 Saturday morning at the Salem City Park. Fifteen teams have registered for this year’s event and the goal is to raise $55,000. Last year, ten teams raised a total of $55,233. The event will begin with a survivor's dinner at 6:00 Friday evening. Then at 7:00, the Relay will open with a new sponsor lap where cancer survivors and caregivers will walk or use wheelchairs to complete the first lap. Highlighting the evening is the luminary ceremony that takes place after dark to honor cancer survivors and to remember those lost. This year will feature a new event call the Fight Back ceremony. The Fight Back ceremony encourages people to take preventive measures and complete different testing measures. A favorite event of the evening, the Queen and King of the Relay competition, will begin at 10:30 Friday night. There will be food, games and raffles throughout the evening. Everyone is invited to participate and support their favorite team. The co-chairpersons this year are Jeanette Russell and Vicki Loveday. The third annual "It's OK To Get Outside!" special youth learning days are planned for two dates this summer at the Bonebrake Center. These all-day events will include several concurrent sessions and lots of outdoor activities led by representatives of several regional agencies and organizations, all geared toward helping kids grades K-7 (ages 5-13) finish the requirements for their Ozark Kids' Connection (OK) award. There will be stream clean-ups, nature hikes, gardening, interpretive programs, and stations to help them identify various items (animals, plants, famous people, artifacts, etc.) relevant to Ozark nature or history. These events are free of charge and families with children ages 5-13 are invited to attend either or both days. ALL children MUST be accompanied by an adult! Please bring a lunch for your child. Children who have already signed up for the program over the past few months are encouraged to come and complete their program and earn their decorative Ozark Kids patch. Kent Nichols will speak on “John Boats on the Current River” Tuesday as part of the Dent County Historical Society’s Speaker Series at the Pizza Inn in Salem starting at 6:00. The Salem High School 2010 Graduation photos can be picked up today at the High School office between the hours of 8:00 am and 3:00 pm.
An Advanced Grazing School will be held on Thursday and Friday, June 17th and 18th at the University of Missouri Wurdack Farm near Cook Station. This school is designed for those individuals who have previously attended a basic Management Intensive Grazing school or who have been actively using managed grazing on their farms. This course will feature advanced instruction on many of the concepts necessary to take your skills as a grass farmer and livestock producer to the next level. Topics for the school include: advanced techniques for measuring forage; availability and pasture allocation; grazing livestock feed and mineral supplementation; frame/disposition/body condition scoring of livestock; advanced soil health and fertility management; winter grazing, and grazing management techniques. The school will feature tours and hands-on instruction at the MU Wurdack Farm and the Denny and Mary Beth Pogue Farm. The cost is $50 person, $75 for a farm couple and a $25 per person deposit if needed by June 10th. Blake DeWitt's two-run single in the third inning proved to be the difference, as the Los Angeles Dodgers held off the St. Louis Cardinals, 4-3, to complete a three-game series sweep. Ryan Ludwick smacked a three-run homer for St. Louis, which has lost four in a row for the first time since a five-game slide from June 5-9 of last season. Adam Wainwright (8-4), coming off his first-career shutout last Friday against Milwaukee, gave up four runs on eight hits in six frames to take the loss. He also struck out six and walked five. The Cards are off today.
Delmon Young hit a solo homer and Carl Pavano was solid in eight innings on the mound, as the Minnesota Twins handled the Kansas City Royals, 6-2, in the second test of a three-game set at Target Field. Billy Butler and Jason Kendall each drove in a run for Kansas City, which has lost six of its eight meetings with Minnesota this season. Kyle Davies (4-5) allowed five runs -- four earned -- on eight hits in a 6 2/3-inning start. Kansas City and Minnesota finish up their series tonight.
St. Louis Rams minority owner Stan Kroenke has submitted a proposal to the NFL regarding the sale of the franchise. Kroenke currently owns 40 percent of the team and has the option to purchase the remaining 60 percent of the franchise from the Rosenbloom family, which earlier this year had announced its intention to sell its share of the club to Illinois businessman Shahid Khan. However, Kroenke first had the option to match the offer and exercised his right to do so. There is an issue with the NFL's cross-ownership rules, as Kroenke is also the majority owner of the NHL's Colorado Avalanche and NBA's Denver Nuggets. On Tuesday, the Denver Post reported that Kroenke has plans to shift majority ownership of the Nuggets to his son, Josh. Kroenke also released a statement through the Rams on Tuesday, indicating his plan to own all three teams.
Patrick Kane's goal 4:06 into overtime lifted the Chicago Blackhawks to a 4-3 overtime victory over the Philadelphia Flyers to take the deciding Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals. Jonathan Toews, the Conn Smythe Trophy winner as playoff MVP, collected an assist and tied Denis Savard's franchise playoff record with 29 points in the postseason.
The Salem Lady Tiger Softball Summer Camp will he held July 12th thru 15th and July 19th thru 22nd from 8:00 am to 11:00 am for girl's entering 9th through 12 grades and from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm for girl's entering 6th through 8th grades. The Salem Lady Tiger Softball Summer Camp will be held at the blue field next to the old armory, the cost is $20 per camper and each camper will receive a camp T-shirt.
