The “Voice of the Ozarks” and other concerned recreational users of the Jacks Fork River and the Current River will be hosting a public meeting to discuss the newly proposed Ozark National Scenic Riverways’ General Management Plan Alternatives. The meeting in our area will be held on Thursday, June 11th at the old Salem City Hall beginning at 7:00 pm. All concerned individuals are encouraged to attend and engage in an open discussion concerning the proposed restrictions contained within the General Management Plan Alternatives.

The Dent Count Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning.  In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading would be done and rock would be hauled to Dent County Road 6670 and a culvert would be cleaned out and tree would be removed from Dent County Road 5510. Purcell also said that patch grading would be done on Dent County Road 5080 and a District 1 crew member would be traveling to Springfield to pick up a load of oil for the durapatcher.  District 2 Road Supervisor Charlie Malone gave the road report for District 2 as Commissioner Gary Larson is out of town. Malone reported that the continued rain has put a halt on grading, but crews would be busy removing debris from Dent County Roads 2360, 4290 and 5225. He also said that crossover pipes would be replaced on Dent County Roads 4290 and 5225 and driveway pipes would be installed on Dent County Roads 2630 and 3210. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he would be contacting Steve Morton about replacing the insulation and ceiling tiles in the Judicial Building. Betty Gittemier stopped by the meeting to ask the Commission about getting Dent County Road 6350 chip and sealed.  Gittemier said that a counter had been put on the road last year, but never heard anything after the counter was taken up. Commissioner Purcell said he would look for the paperworkconcerning the counter and would call Gittemier as soon as he found any information. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public

The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released their report for the month of May. During the month, they served 112 papers consisting of 69 civil papers, 39 criminal papers and four notices to vacate, plus they served 13 felony warrants and four misdemeanor warrants. In May, there was one drug arrest and seven domestic disturbance calls were addressed. The Sheriff’s Department issued 32 tickets, made three DWI arrests, conducted 74 traffic stops, and assisted on four traffic accidents in May. The Dent County Sheriff’s Department also conducted two death investigations. For the month of May, the Sheriff’s Department investigated nine thefts, three burglaries, two assaults, two property damage reports, five reports of crimes against children, and one trespassing and/or property line dispute. The Department spent 211 hours working in court, four hours testifying and 81 hours in training. The Dent County Sheriff’s Department handled a total of 138 calls during the month and made five community policing appearances. In the Dent County Jail Report for May, there were 32 prisoners incarcerated for the month with an average daily total of 10. There were four transfers to the Department of Corrections, one transfer to or from other departments and two transfers to a mental facility. During the month of May, the sheriff’s department drove a total of 18,348 miles on criminal investigations, patrolling and prisoner transportation.

The Salem Memorial District Hospital Auxiliary 2009 Garden Tour scheduled for June 28th has been cancelled due to the recent storms and the damage caused from those storms.

Jeremy Hermida clubbed a slider halfway up into the right-field seats in the bottom of the ninth, lifting Florida past St. Louis, 4-3, in the first of three games at Land Shark Stadium. Jason Motte (2-2) gave up the home run in the ninth to take the loss. Rick Ankiel went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in while Cody Rasmus also had two hits for the Cardinals, who came into the series in a slump after getting swept in a four-game series by Colorado. The Cardinals' Chris Carpenter got a no-decisions despite a quality start. Carpenter gave up three runs on six hits with three strikeouts and one walk over six frames. The Cardinals and Marlins play again tonight at 5:50 on KSMO Radio.

Mark DeRosa hit his fifth career grand slam in the seventh inning as the Cleveland Indians got by the Kansas City Royals, 8-4, in the opener of a three-game series at Progressive Field. Miguel Olivo had a pair of hits, including a solo homer, while David DeJesus had an RBI triple for the Royals, who have dropped 10 of their last 11. Willie Bloomquist had three hits, an RBI and run scored in defeat. Brian Bannister pitched to a no-decision after going five innings. The righty surrendered four runs -- one earned -- on four hits, walked three and fanned five. Juan Cruz picked up the loss to fall to 3-2 on the year. The Royals and Indians play again tonight.

Graveside services for Marie Wycoff of Lake St. Louis, formerly of St. James, age 83, will be held Thursday at 11:00 in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery in St. James. Two visitations will be held: one will be this morning from 9:00 to 11:00 at the Immuculate Conception Church in Dardenne Prairie, MO and the other will be Thursday morning from 10:00 to 11:00 at James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James.

Funeral services for Mary Ellen "Molly" Ragan of Vienna, age 80, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the United Methodist Church in Vienna. Visitation will be held tonight from 5:00 to 8:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Interment will be in the James Community Cemetery in Vienna. Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church of Vienna or the James Community Cemetery.

Graveside services for George Franklin Blair of Cuba, formerly of Steelville, age 85, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Steelville Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.

Funeral services for Edna J. Steensland of Rolla, formerly of Rapid City, South Dakota, age 97, will be held Friday in Casper Wyoming. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary of Rolla. Memorials may be made to the Arthritis Foundation or Phelps Regional Hospice.

Funeral services for Donald Gamblin of Salem, formerly of Florida, age 81, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Union Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Memorials are suggested to the Union Cemetery.

Graveside services for J. Richene Emory Laubach of Willow Springs, age 74, will be held Saturday at 4:00 at the North Lawn Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.

Graveside services for James “Jim” Carl Thomas of Salem, formerly of Westland, Michigan, age 55, will be held Monday, June 15th at 11:00 at the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family for funeral expenses. All the arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.
