Dent County Sheriff Bob Wofford is pleased to announce the award of an Internet Cyber Crime Grant by the Missouri Department of Public Safety. This grant will provide funds to expand the Sheriff's Departments' current computer lab with additional equipment, software and training. The grant will allow the department to establish a Regional Computer Crime Education and Enforcement Group (RCCEEG) location in South Central Missouri. This lab will provide law enforcement in Dent and surrounding counties with a resource to assist in the investigations of cyber crime, particularly crimes against children. The grant includes funds to pay for an additional part-time deputy. Since 2007 the Dent County Sheriff's Department has had the ability to perform some computer forensics in-house. This grant will allow the department to expand the types of hardware it has to examine cell phones and PDA devices. It will also provide training and tools to do proactive Internet child pornography investigations and undercover chat investigations. The law enforcement agencies of rural South Central Missouri have had little access to qualified cyber crime investigators and computer forensic labs. Cell phone images and text messages have become the communication method of choice for youths. Over the last year, the department has investigated over six cases of enticement of a child, or statutory rape/sodomy, where a computer or cell phone was used to communicate with the victims.  Dent County is located over 2 hours from the Missouri state laboratory in Jefferson City, or the RCCEEG lab in St. Louis. The primary goal of the project funded by this grant is to provide a source of technology expertise to assist Law Enforcement in Dent County and the surrounding counties of South Central Missouri in the investigation and prosecution of cases where digital evidence may be involved, particularly crimes against children. It is the intent of the Dent County Sheriff's Department to work with regional agencies developing similar capabilities, to form a regional resource, sharing expertise, tools, standards, training, and manpower. The department does not expect the goals of this program to be achieved in a single 12-month period. The first objectives to be met are primarily the acquisition of additional equipment and training. The necessary training would be followed by the development of a Cyber Crimes Awareness program. The objectives of this program would be to teach rural law enforcement officers what to look for when encountering digital evidence, the opportunities to find additional evidence, the legalities involved, and to make this training program available in the first half of 2009.

The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2480, 5360 and 5580, and material would be hauled to Dent County Road 4210. Simpson also said that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 5170 and speed limit signs would be posted on Dent County Roads 5015 and 6510.  District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2570, 2580, 3080, 3090 and 3100, and brush would be cut on Dent County Road 3260.  Tune also said the rest of the District 2 crew would be patching chip and seal on the Round Pond Road.  Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles attended a Community Betterment Association Meeting last night and Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said that she would be attending a Website Committee Meeting on Wednesday. At 10:00 Monday morning, the Commission opened their only proposal for a Rural Address Coordinator and that was from the Salem TCRC.  Ray Walden was at the meeting representing TCRC and their proposal was for the remainder of this year starting July 31st and lasting thru December 31st in the amount of $1500 per month, and he said that three staff members would attend the training sessions. The Commission questioned the $1500 per month after the first six months, because the program would then be established and it would not take up as much time as it did in the beginning.  Walden said the price could be re-negotiated when next years contract comes up. The Commission said they would look over the proposal more and get back with Walden within a week. The next meeting of the Commission will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.
