An accident occurred Wednesday afternoon at 4:48 in Dent County on Highway 32 one mile east of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2005 Dodge Pickup driven by 68-year-old Billie Queen of Bakersfield, California was traveling east on Highway 32. The accident occurred when Queen suffered a medical emergency and lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck a fence. Queen was transported by ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead due a medical condition. The next of kin has been notified. The Dodge sustained minor damage and was removed from the scene by Whitakers Towing in Salem.

The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors held their monthly meeting Tuesday evening at the fire station. After approval of the agenda, the minutes from the previous meeting, bills were reviewed, file copies were signed and the FEMA grant money of $63,452 was received on June 2^nd and deposited. The calendar was reviewed and approved. The monthly reimbursement report for May showed a total of 16 calls. There were six first responder calls, two motor vehicle calls, two mutual aid calls, one hazmat call, one CO2 call, one fire alarm call, one other call, one call for a meeting and one call for training. In old business, the Board decided since after many calls there has been no response from Rel-Tek regarding the roof settlement. One more attempt will be made to contact the company before pursuing legal avenues. In new business, the District now has five new volunteers and there are several applications in the works for fire fighters. A motion was made to reimburse the junior fire fighters at $5 per call beginning June 1^st of this year. The motion carried all four board members with one abstain. There was a discussion about the public relations committee and Liz Gruendel volunteered to chair that committee. The goal will be to inform the public of the Dent County Fire Districts mission and to make people aware of their roll in the community. Chief Brad Nash reported that Phase I of the radio upgrade is still in the works but near completion, Phase II has started with items placed on order. Nash reported that the audit is completed and he should have the results by the July or August meeting. Nash reported on the truck status and the Ladder truck will need a windshield. The Board then voted to go into Closed Session to discuss personnel. The next meeting of the Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors will be held on Tuesday, July 5^th at the fire station beginning at 6:00.

The Annual Relay For Life events will be held at the Salem City Park. The events start at 6:00 pm on Friday, June 17^th with a survivor dinner. After dinner will be at 7:00 will be the Opening Ceremonies, followed by music from the Grace Community Junk Band at 8:00 and the Iron Mountain Bluegrass Band at 8:30. At 9:30 will be the Luminaria Ceremony followed by the Oak Grove Praise Band at 10:00. The Relay Idol Contest will be starting at 10:30 followed by Emily Hanning at 11:30. The last scheduled event will be the Fight Back Ceremony at midnight. There will be fun filled activities all night long until 6:00 in the morning on Saturday, June 18^th. In the event of the possibility of adverse weather, a decision will be made by 2:00 Friday afternoon if the activities should be moved to the Salem High School gym. If the location is changed, it will be announced on KSMO Radio and by posted on their website at ksmoradio.com. Please no pets unless they are for assistance. The Meramec Regional Planning Commission will conduct their monthly meeting tonight at the MRPC office located at #4 Industrial Drive in St. James beginning at 5:00 pm and will be held in conjunction with a retirement reception/open house for Richard Cavender for 32-years of service. After approval of the agenda and several contracts, Tammy Snodgrass will then report on solid waste activities, Kraig Bone will report on MREPC activities, Tom Klebba will report on business loan activities and T.R. Dudley will report on workforce development activities. Chairman Russell Scheulen and Director Richard Cavender will then report on issues of interest. The monthly meeting and retirement reception/open house is open to the public.

A few inches…that small distance is all that stood between Houston starter Bud Norris and the Astros' first no-hitter since 2003. Instead, he had to settle for allowing one hit, a solo home run by ex-Astro Lance Berkman with two outs in the seventh, in a 4-1 victory over the Cardinals at Minute Maid Park. Norris (4-4) struck out just two over his eight frames of work and was backed up by an RBI from Carlos Lee and Jason Michaels. Jaime Garcia (6-2) threw a lot of pitches in the loss, falling just short of 100 in five innings while surrendering three runs on seven hits with a pair of walks and one strikeout. The Cardinals saw their four-game winning streak come to an end. The Cards and Astros play the rbber game of the series tonight at 6:30 on KSMO Radio.

Adam Lind belted the second grand slam of his career and Jayson Nix added a three-run blast, as the Toronto Blue Jays outslugged the Kansas City Royals to earn a 9-8 win in the third of a four- game set from Kauffman Stadium. Danny Duffy (0-2) lasted just four innings to suffer the loss, allowing five runs on eight hits and four walks. Nathan Adcock allowed four runs on three hits while striking out four over three innings in relief of Duffy. Melky Cabrera and Billy Butler each belted a three-run homer for the Royals, who have lost six of seven. The Royals and Blue Jays will play this afternoon.

Jack Clark Day at the Ballpark has been rescheduled for Sunday, June 26^th at the Salem City Park. Registration is FREE for boys who are 8–15 years old. Forms are available at the Bank of Salem and at James and Gahr Mortuary. Boys age 8-12 will be able to participate in a clinic from 2:00 to 3:30 pm and boys age 13-15 the clinic will be held from 3:30 to 5:00 pm.
