Embarq Missouri, Inc. has filed an application with the Missouri Public Service Commission seeking competitive classification for all of its business services (other than exchange access services) in its Buckner, Odessa, Oak Grove, Pleasant Hill and Salem exchanges. Embarq also seeks competitive classification for all of its residential services (other than exchange access services) in its Salem exchange. If competitive status is granted, Embarq would no longer be subject to price or rate regulation by the PSC in those exchanges listed above. Embarq would be permitted to raise or lower telephone rates at its own discretion, subject to the marketplace. The Office of the Public Counsel is a separate state agency that represents the general public in matters before the commission. The PSC staff, the Office of the Public Counsel and any other interested party is to file any objections or recommendations regarding Embarq’s request by June 13, 2008. In this case, state law requires the commission to issue its decision within 30 days of Embarq’s June 3

^rd filing. Under the law, the 30-day criteria for determining competitive classification is based upon the existence of two other nonaffiliated entities providing basic local telecommunications service, one of which may be a wireless provider, the other a wire line company providing local voice service using facilities in which it has a partial or full ownership interest. If any party opposes Embarq’s application, a hearing will be held on June in Jefferson City.

The Salem Police Department released their report for the month of May. During the month, they wrote 18 traffic tickets, 28 warning tickets and three equipment repair orders. They also served 28 summons to appear in court and five fugitive warrants. The Salem Police Department investigated 16 accidents, two assaults, one domestic assault and two reports of driving while intoxicated. The Police Department also investigated 12 reports of stealing, one report of property damage, one report of tampering, two burglaries, four reports of disorderly conduct, two reports of forgery, one report of harassment, one report of a peace disturbance, one report of trespassing, one report of counterfeiting, and one report of leaving the scene of an accident. They also investigated five reports of possession of marijuana. The Salem Police Department also conducted one death investigation. The police received 1,770 calls for service during the month, handled 80 walk-ins to the station, and redirected 92 calls to the animal control officer. They also spent 12 hours in court testifying, and three hours as court bailiff. The calls in May included 15 calls for escorts, 24 9-1-1 calls, six intoxicated driver investigations, one call for a suspicious person or vehicle, eight calls for peace disturbances, 17 ambulance assist calls, seven calls for alarms sounding, seven calls for fights in progress, five domestic dispute calls, six calls for vehicle lookouts, two calls for prowlers, two calls for an intoxicated pedestrian, three fire calls and two wreckers were needed. The Salem Police Department drove a total of 13,828 miles during the month of May. The Salem Police Department arrested 26 males and 13 females during the month of May.

The Missouri State Auditor’s Office received petitions containing 752 signatures of registered resident voters requesting an audit of the City of Rolla. State law requires the state auditor to conduct an audit of any political subdivision if requested to do so by enough registered voters. The Missouri State Auditor’s Office has begun an audit of the City of Rolla. Brendan Ryan's two-run single highlighted a five-run seventh inning, as the St. Louis Cardinals downed the Houston Astros, 5-4, in the rubber match of a three-game series at Minute Maid Park. Brian Barton, Troy Glaus and Yadier Molina each had a hit for the Cardinals, who were held to four in the game. St. Louis has won two straight and four of its last six overall. St. Louis starter Kyle Lohse (7-2) gave up three runs on five hits in six innings of work to collect the win. Ryan Franklin struck out the side in the ninth to notch his eighth save of the season. St. Louis is one of only three major league teams that have a winning record on the road (17-14). The Red Birds have the night off tonight before heading to Cincinnati tomorrow.

Bobby Abreu belted a two-run homer and Jason Giambi broke a sixth-inning tie with a solo blast, as the New York Yankees went on to a 6-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals in the third of a four- game set at Yankee Stadium. Dan Giese (1-1) earned his first big league win. He tossed 2 2/3 innings of hitless ball, striking out three without a walk. Jose Guillen, after belting two homers and driving in seven runs Saturday, added another home run on Sunday for the Royals, losers in 17 of their last 20. Kansas City starter Zack Greinke (5-4) blanked the Yankees over eight innings back on April 9, but took the loss in this one. He was charged with four runs on six hits with four walks and six strikeouts in five-plus innings. The Royals and the Yankees will meet again this afternoon in New York.
