The Salem Police Department released their report for the month of May. During the month, they wrote 12 equipment repair orders, 10 summons to appear in court, 23 warning tickets, and 29 traffic tickets. The Salem Police Department investigated 11 accidents, one assault, two burglaries, three reports of disorderly conduct, five reports of domestic violence, one report of driving while intoxicated, one report of fraudulent use of a credit/debit card, three fugitive warrants, one report of identity theft, and three reports of leaving the scene of an accident. The department also investigated two reports of a lost or stolen plate, one report of possession of an illegal weapon, six reports of stealing, two reports of trespassing, one report of unlawful use of a weapon and one report for a 96-hour commitment. They also conducted one death investigation during the month.  The police department received 1,693 calls for service during the month, handled 112 walk-ins to the station, and redirected 85 calls to the animal control officer. They spent six hours in court testifying, three hours as court bailiff and spent six hours teaching D.A.R.E. The calls in May included 44 calls for escorts, three calls for an intoxicated driver, three calls for prowlers, three calls for a suspicious person and/or vehicle, three intoxicated pedestrian calls, eight calls for domestic disputes, three calls for a wrecker, 17 911 calls, four calls for a peace disturbance, five calls for alarms sounding, five calls for fights in progress, 13 ambulance assist calls, and one fire call.  The Salem Police Department drove a total of 9,744 miles and arrested 10 males and 5 females during the month of May.

Missouri’s 34 restored elk, plus five new calves, were released Wednesday, June 1^st from their three-acre holding site at the Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) Peck Ranch Conservation Area. The release followed final approval of stringent health-testing protocols by the Missouri Department of Agriculture. The Peck Ranch Refuge Area will remain temporarily closed to the public to allow the adult elk and new calves time to acclimate to the area with a minimum of human disturbance. The 34 adult elk and five newborn calves have been fitted with Global Positioning System (GPS) radio collars as part of a cooperative research project with the University of Missouri. The collars will help researchers track the elks’ health, movement patterns and preferred types of vegetation. The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation provided funds for the collars. The research project is being partially funded by the Wildlife Restoration Program administered through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Captain Lee Ann Kenley, commanding officer of Troop I, announces that troopers will be conducting a sobriety checkpoint in Phelps County during the month of June. Captain Kenley urges all motorists passing through a checkpoint to use extreme caution by slowing down, keeping their eyes on the road and vehicles ahead for any sudden stopping, and to follow the directions of the officers.

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is tagging 1,600 legal-sized small mouth bass on five rivers in southern Missouri as part of a research project. Anglers who catch tagged bass can earn $25 or $75 by reporting their catches to MDC researchers. MDC biologists are tagging smallmouth bass in the Black River, Castor River, Courtois Creek, Current River, and the North Fork of the White River, and will continue tagging during the spring season over the next two years. The tagged bass do not have to be kept to receive a reward. Anglers may just remove the tag and release the fish. Tags must be returned to the MDC to receive a reward. To report tagged catches, anglers must call the phone number listed on the tag and provide the following information: tag number, if the fish was kept or released, date of catch, total length of fish, and approximate location of catch. All 4-H/FFA members with market animal projects that will be showing and selling at the Fair this year are encouraged to attend a Fair Pre-Show on Saturday, June 18^th at the Commons livestock barn beginning at 9:00 am.  First-time exhibitors must attend or pay an additional 1% commission fee. Steers should be brought to the pre-show to acquaint them with the arena and for 4-H’ers to practice leading them with the other steers. Instruction will be given on what the judges will be looking for and how best to show your animal. There will also be demonstrations of how to show hogs and lambs. Albert Pujols continued his power surge by blasting a mammoth solo home run and Lance Berkman drilled a two-run shot in the first inning against his former team in St. Louis' 7-4 victory over the Astros. Jake Westbrook (6-3) delivered a three-run double and allowed eight hits and three runs over 5 1/3 innings. Ryan Theriot doubled in a run in the final inning to stretch his career-best hitting streak to 20 games. Daniel Descalso scored twice for the Cardinals, who have won four in a row who will play Houston tonight at 6:30 on KSMO Radio.

St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols has been named the National League player of the week for the period ending June 5. In seven games last week, Pujols batted .444 (12-for-27) and was tops in the majors with five home runs, a 1.074 slugging percentage and 11 runs scored. Two of Pujols' home runs were walk-off winners and came on consecutive days.

Adam Lind and J.P. Arencibia each blasted a home run and combined for five RBI to lead the Toronto Blue Jays to an 8-5 victory over the Kansas City Royals. KC starter Vin Mazzaro (0-1) allowed six runs on eight hits in five innings to take the loss. Jeff Francoeur was 2-for-5 with three RBI for the Royals, who snapped a four- game losing streak with an 11-inning victory over the Blue Jays in Monday's series opener. The two teams play again tonight.

Jack Clark Day at the ballpark has been rescheduled for Sunday, June 26^th. Registration is free for boys are 8–15. Boys age 8-12 will be able to participate in a clinic from 2:00 to 3:30 pm and boys age 13-15 the clinic will be held from 3:30 to 5:00 pm.
