The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2410, 2480, 5015, 5080, 5085, 5552 and 5553. Purcell also said that brush would be cut at the junctions of Dent County Roads 6180 and 6190 and 5015 and 5010 and a crew member would be traveling to Springfield to pick up a load of oil for the durapatcher. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading would be done and rock would be hauled to Dent County Roads 2140, 3134 and 4280. Larson also reported that grading would be done and rock would be hauled to Dent County Road 2100 along with the installation of a crossover pipe and ditch work. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he would be attending a Meramec Community Enhancement Corporation Meeting and a MODOT Coalition For Safer Roadways meeting today in St. James. Also at the meeting, Commissioner Purcell updated the commission on the closing of Swiney Bridge on Dent County Road 5680. He said that MODOT declared it unsafe due to washouts around the edge of the bridge and also because of the support in the middle of the 24-foot long bridge. Purcell stated that an engineer would be here this week to look at the bridge and decide what the best solution would be to fix the bridge. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and that meeting is open to the public.

An accident happened on May 27^th at 8:40 in the evening at the intersection of Water and Hunt Street in Salem. According to the Salem Police report a 1985 Olds Royal driven by Avis Beers of Salem was stopped on Hunt Street and stated that her vision was obscured by brush and pulled in front of a 1994 Ford Tempo driven by Carla Jefferson of Salem who was traveling north bound on Water Street. After impact Beers struck a fire hydrant before coming to a stop. Jefferson reported injuries, but refused E.M.S treatment. Both vehicles sustained severe damage and were towed from the scene.

The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) will be chip sealing several routes this week. Weather permitting, the crews and equipment will be on the roadway between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Chip sealing will be performed in Dent County on Route E from Highway 119 to Route K, and in Phelps County on Route CC, from Highway 63 to Route H. MoDOT performs chip-seal resurfacing on roads that are in generally fair to better condition. The benefits include crack sealing, increased skid resistance and correction of minor rutting, which extends the life of the pavement in a cost effective way. While working, flaggers and a pilot car will be used to manage traffic. When motorists travel a newly chip-sealed road marked by "Fresh Oil" and "Loose Gravel" signs, they should keep their speed down and allow plenty of distance between vehicles to prevent small rocks from coming loose and hitting oncoming traffic. The Salem High School 2010 Graduation photos can be picked up through Thursday, June 10^th at the High School office between the hours of 8:00 am and 3:00 pm.

An Advanced Grazing School will be held on Thursday and Friday, June 17^th and 18^th at the University of Missouri Wurdack Farm near Cook Station. This school is designed for those individuals who have previously attended a basic Management Intensive Grazing school or who have been actively using managed grazing on their farms. This course will feature advanced instruction on many of the concepts necessary to take your skills as a grass farmer and livestock producer to the next level. Topics for the school include: advanced techniques for measuring forage; availability and pasture allocation; grazing livestock feed and mineral supplementation; frame/disposition/body condition scoring of livestock; advanced soil health and fertility management; winter grazing, and grazing management techniques. The school will feature tours and hands-on instruction at the MU Wurdack Farm and the Denny and Mary Beth Pogue Farm. The cost is $50 person, $75 for a farm couple and a $25 per person deposit if needed by June 10^th. Blake DeWitt hit a three-run home run and drove in a career-best five runs, more than enough support for young hurler Carlos Monasterios, as the Dodgers routed the Cardinals, 12-4, in the first of three games at Chavez Ravine. Blake Hawksworth (0-3) was roughed up again, giving up six runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and three walks over four frames. Ryan Ludwick hit a pair of solo homers for the Cardinals, who have lost two straight. The Cardinals and Dodgers play again tonight at 8:50.

The Kansas City Royals had the day off Monday and will begin a three game series with the Minnesota Twins tonight. The Royals are 10 games under .500 and are 9 ½ games behind the Twins in the AL Central Division.

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Colby Rasmus was named the National League Player of the Week for the period ending June 6. Rasmus hit .500 (11-22) with three home runs, nine RBI and eight runs scored during the week. He also led the major leagues with a 1.000 slugging percentage and a .577 on-base percentage, which tied for second in the NL. This is Rasmus' first-ever weekly award.

The St. Louis Rams announced Monday they have acquired Isaac Bruce, the franchise's all-time leading receiver, so he can retire with the team. Bruce spent the last two seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, after he had set every major receiving record in Rams history. He recorded 942 receptions for 14,109 yards and 84 touchdowns with St. Louis over 14 seasons. Bruce is also the franchise's leader in postseason receiving yards (759). The Rams and Bruce will hold a news conference Wednesday afternoon. Bruce, 37, will retire as one of the great receivers in NFL history. He is second all-time in receiving yards with 15,208, trailing only Jerry Rice. Bruce also ranks fifth all-time in receptions (1,024) and ninth in receiving touchdowns (91).

The first round of the MLB Draft was held yesterday as the Royals took SS Christian Colon from Cal-State Fullerton with the fourth overall pick. The Cardinals took 3B Zack Cox from Arkansas with the 25th overall pick.

The Salem Lady Tiger Softball Summer Camp will he held July 12th thru 15th and July 19th thru 22nd from 8:00 am to 11:00 am for girl's entering 9th through 12 grades and from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm for girl's entering 6th through 8th grades. The Salem Lady Tiger Softball Summer Camp will be held at the blue field next to the old armory, the cost is $20 per camper and each camper will receive a camp T-shirt. Funeral services for Lester “Les” Thoms of Salem, age 88, are incomplete at this time, but are under the direction of Wilson Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Bernell Burlyn Wisdom of Salem, age 81, will be private and held at a later date. All the arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Leukemia Foundation.

Funeral services for Melvin LeRoy Arganbright of Salem, age 61, will be held at a later date. All arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary of Salem.
