The Dent County Commissioners met Thursday morning at the Courthouse for their regular meeting. District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that crews were checking for washouts and downed trees and limbs and cutting brush on Dent County Road 6510. Purcell went on to say that he had a man doing shoulder work with the backhoe on Dent County Roads 6220 and 6230, a man hauling brown rock and a man doing mowing and cleaning up around the Road and Bridge Department. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading was being done on Dent County Roads 2210, 2320 and 4290, materials were being hauled to Dent County Road 4290, brush was being cut on Dent County Road 6160, and a man was screening brown rock at the Road and Bridge Department. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles informed the Commissioners that he had received emails and contacts from citizens inquiring about the Department of the Interior White River Blueway designation. Skiles said that since the Current River feeds into the White River it is part of the White River watershed resulting in roughly the lower one third of Dent County being included in the White River Blueway. If finalized the Blueway would cover 18 to 20 counties in South Missouri and much of Northern Arkansas. The White River would be the second Blueway designation in the county with the first being the Connecticut River watershed in the Northeast. United States Senator Roy Blunt’s Field Representative Jennifer Kasten, who was in the Courthouse to conduct Senator Blunt’s listening post, stopped in and the Commissioners visited with her about the proposed Blueway. Kasten indicated she would talk to Tom Schulte to get more information and get back to the Commission. Skiles wanted to remind everyone that the Dent County Courthouse would be closed today in honor of Dent County Assessor Brenda Bell. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 at the Dent County Courthouse and it is open to the public.
Last weekend, Ozark National Scenic Riverways was hit with over four inches of rain causing flooding of the Jacks Fork and Current Rivers. The high waters forced the closure of the rivers and Big Spring and Alley Spring Campgrounds for visitor safety. According to Superintendent Bill Black, the water has receded enough to open portions of the Jacks Fork and Current Rivers and visitors are again able to camp at the Big Spring and Alley Spring. The flooding deposited debris and damaged facilities. Park staff restored some areas, but evidence of the flooding remain causing operational changes. At Buck Hollow, the high water steeply cut away the Jacks Fork River bank. Barricades have been placed to keep visitor vehicles away from the hazard. Please do not drive around the barriers for your safety. Canoes, kayaks, and other equipment must be carried from the parking area to the river. The road to Pot Hole was severely undercut and washed away by the flooding Current River. That road is closed. For more information, call (573) 323-4236, ext. 0.

Some private fishing areas may still require permits, and trespass laws remain in effect on private property. Conservation makes Missouri a great place to fish, and Free Fishing Days encourages people to sample the state's abundant fishing opportunities. Missouri is blessed with more than a million acres of surface water, and most of it provides great fishing. According to MDC, more than 200 different fish species are found in Missouri, with 40 of them being game fish for the state’s more than 1.1 million anglers. Conservation also enriches Missouri’s economy and Missourians’ quality of life. Fishing in the state generates more than a billion dollars for local communities and the state’s economy, and supports thousands of jobs. Public fishing areas are available in every county in Missouri. Many state-owned fishing areas also have special facilities for anglers with disabilities. Matt Adams and Matt Holliday were among five St. Louis players to homer as the Cardinals cruised to a 12-8 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks in the finale of a four-game set at Busch Stadium. Adams crushed a three-run shot while Holliday and Daniel Descalso each added a two-run blast for the Cardinals, who also got homers from Matt Carpenter and Shelby Miller. Miller (7-3) gave up two runs on six hits while striking out nine over six frames. The Cardinals will travel to Cincinnati to start a three-game series with the Reds tonight. You’ll be able to hear the game on KSMO Radio, starting with the pre-game show at 5:35.
The St. Louis Cardinals have recalled rookie left-handed reliever Kevin Siegrist from Triple-A Memphis and optioned right-handed pitcher Maikel Cleto. Siegrist was named the Cardinals Minor League Pitcher of the Month for May.
The Kansas City Royals rallied to score four runs in the eighth inning, capped with a two-run home run by Lorenzo Cain, and defeated the Minnesota Twins, 7-3, in the rubber match of a three- game series at Kauffman Stadium. Chris Getz drove in two runs while Salvador Perez had an RBI for the Royals. Wade Davis pitched five innings while allowing three unearned runs. The Royals will start a series with the Astros tonight.

Funeral arrangements for Brenda Bell of Salem, age 63, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Interment will be in the Round Pond Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Project Win, the Round Pond Cemetery, or the Second Baptist Church.
Funeral services for Edith Love of Steelville, age 96, will be held this evening at 7:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 5:00 until time of service at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home.
Memorial services for Alta Geraldean “Dean” Hogan of Salem, age 80, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 10:30 until service time at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be made to the St. Jude’s Children Research.
Memorial services for Carolyn Ann Steiner of Rolla, age 58, will be held at 1:00 on Saturday at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
Funeral services for Virgie Mae Nivens of Salem, age 92, will be held Sunday at 1:30 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Saturday night from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery in Salem.
Memorial services for George Garth Miller Sr. of Salem, age 90, will be held in his hometown of Clarion, Iowa at a later date. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel.
Funeral services for Charles Junior Reed of Rolla, age 76, are incomplete. Arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
