The Salem Police Department has released several reports. On Sunday, May 20^th at 3:35 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to Wal-Mart in reference to trespassing. The investigation led to the arrest of a 35-year old Bismarck female for trespassing on Wal-Mart properties after having received a no trespass order. She was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Later that night at 8:00, an officer transported a 20-year old Neosho male to the Ozark Medical Center in West Plains in lieu of a mental commitment order. On Monday, May 21^st at 7:09 in the evening, an officer made contact with a 61-year old Salem female who had an active warrant from the City of Salem. She was taken into custody on the warrant and was later released after pleading guilty and paying a fine. Later that night at 10:26, an officer was dispatched to the 1500 block of South Water in reference to a disturbance. That investigation led to the arrest of a 32-year old Salem male for disorderly conduct and failure to obey a lawful order of a police officer. He will be issued summons to appear in court upon his release. On Tuesday, May 22^nd at 6:30 in the evening, an officer was dispatched to the 800 block of East Third in reference to a domestic disturbance. The investigation revealed that a 27-year old Salem female had assaulted a 31-year old Salem male. She was arrested, issued summons to appear in court, and incarcerated. On Wednesday, May 23^rd at 7:35, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to damage to a vehicle. That investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown broke the driver side back door glass on a black 2005 Cadillac that was parked in the 200 block of South Missouri. The value of the damage is $600. On Thursday, May 24^th at 12:30 in the afternoon, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown took a Murray riding mower and other items, valued at $2,413, from the bed of a pickup parked in the 600 block of East Roosevelt. Anyone with any information regarding the damage to the vehicle or theft, which are still under investigation, is asked to contact the Salem Police Department at 729-4242.

The picking of banjos, the clanking of a hammer striking an anvil, the stomping of feet, and the neighing of a horse are just some of the sights and sounds visitors can experience during Ozark Heritage Day on Saturday, June 9^th beginning at 9:00 a.m. The Ozark Depression Homestead at Big Spring will come alive with high stepping square dancers, Bluegrass music, and Ozark folkway demonstrations during this FREE event. Wool spinning, pottery, woodworking, chair caning, quilting, fiddle making, blacksmithing, and lye soap making are just some of the traditional Ozark lifeways demonstrated. Traditional bluegrass music by Buzzard Run will abound featuring fiddle, banjo and the old time “Walking Cane” dulcimer. Food will be available for purchase from a local vendor. The East Missouri Dark Sky Organization will present Night Sky Viewing programs on June 9^th and September 8^th. You are invited to look at distant objects in the night sky through telescopes provided by the organization. This event is free and open to the public. Reservations are not required. Bring a lawn chair or a blanket to sit on. Meet at the visitor center. Onondaga Cave State Park is located four miles east of Leasburg on Highway H in Crawford County (exit 214 off Interstate 44). A new parking lot for the natural area is 1.4 miles down Thickety Ford Road, east of Highway N and south of Meramec River’s Campbell Bridge Crossing. The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce and the City of Salem invites businesses, organizations, and individuals to participate in the community’s 2012 4^th of July parade on Wednesday, July 4^th.  This year’s theme is “America’s Past, Present and Future” and it will start at 6:00 PM. The Grand Marshall this year is Ed Gill, a lifelong Salem resident and businessman, who achieved the rank of Lieutenant Senior Grade in the United States Navy. Gill served aboard a minesweeper during the Invasion of Normandy in WWII. A one hundred dollar prize will be awarded to the best “Commercial” and “Non-Commercial” float. The Friends of the Salem Public Library will hold their annual Book Sale today, Friday and Saturday at the ONCRC. There will be new & used books at ‘doggone’ unbelievable prices! The book sale will be held today from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm, on Friday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and on Saturday from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. The Annual Book sale will be held at the Ozark Natural & Cultural Resource Center located at 202 South Main Street in Salem.    

An accident occurred at 11:30 Wednesday morning in Dent County on Route VV about five miles west of Montauk. According to the highway patrol report, a 2002 Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by 63-year old Roy R. King of Raymondville was traveling eastbound on Route VV. The Harley ran off the right side of the roadway, in a curve and overturned onto its side. King suffered moderate injuries and was transported to St. Johns in Springfield by Air Evac. The Harley sustained minor damage and was removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.
