The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell stated that intensive work was going to be done on dent County Road 6580. He said that workers were going to install one culvert and repair another, grade and perform ditch work in some areas, and add materials in other areas. He also said that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 4090, 4122, 4124, 5525, 6240, 6250 and 6255 while rock will be added and grading will be done on Dent County Road 5150. Purcell reported that the brush cutter is currently in the shop and may be available later this week. He did state that he would be attending a Top of the Ozark’s RC & D meeting Wednesday in Houston. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that his district has the Durapatcher this week and repairs will be made on chip and seal roads 3260 and 3280. He stated that grading is going to be done on Dent County Roads 2200, 2370, 4030, 4480, 5280, and 5300. Brush cutting will also be done on Dent County Road 2530. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles stated that he and the other Commissioners, the clerk, assessor and the deputy assessor would be attending a Board of Equalization training in Springfield this Thursday. Because everyone will be gone, there will be no commissioner meeting this Thursday. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be next Monday, June 13^th at the Dent County Courthouse.

The Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Monday evening at the City Hall Council Chambers. No one was in attendance from Bigo’s Restaurant to ask about having a band outside in the parking lot from 4:00 to 10:00 PM on June 25th. City Attorney William Camm Seay stated that they really didn’t need permission to have a band, but they would still be subject to the city noise ordinance if the event were held outside and there was excessive noise. The board accepted the United Health Care plan B3QP that has a $500 deductible and an increase of the co-pay on prescriptions. According to Gary Cubbage, this new plan will save the city $43,000 as their new premium will total $363,000. The board also accepted the bid from Struker Electric, Inc. out of Pittsburgh, KS for the runway and landing lighting at the airport for a total of $150,428. Since this is mostly being paid for by a grant from MoDOT, the bid will have to be sent to their engineers. Once they approved the bid, it will be sent back to the alderman for final approval. The board then accepted the bid from Austin Peters Group from Overland Park, KS for $12,000 to help find a City Administrator for the city. Mayor Gary Brown said that this firm received high marks from the Missouri Municipal League. The board approved a number of recommendations from the Community Services Committee that came from the park board including a family pool pass for $125 for the year, individual pool punch cards, discount pool parties for the city ball teams, one- dollar admission on Saturdays, and to buy concessions locally at the lowest possible price. Mayor Brown discussed the storm sirens and they will be sounded when the city of Salem is in the direct path of a tornado warning issued by the National Weather Service, if a storm spotter indicates that the siren be sounded due to spotted weather conditions or there are straight line winds of 75 mph or greater. The mayor stated that the city hall basement is open if someone wants to take shelter there. Mayor Brown said that the Waste Water Assessment Charges for the City of Salem are $11.04. Other charges in the region average $18.34 and the statewide average is $21.80. Alderman Jerry Randell asked what could be done with abandoned single-wide mobile homes in town and trailer courts that don’t abide by city regulations. City Attorney Seay said the city needs a model ordinance with teeth and they will look at finding such an ordinance for the next meeting. Alderman Hadyn Powell asked about the employee handbook and a workshop will be held on June 16^th at 1:00 to finalize the corrections and additions. The board approved bills #3228 and #3229 that sets the term for the City Treasurer and Director of Engineering which conforms to the other appointed office holders. Three other bills concerning the police department were postponed until there could be more research on them. The board approved Resolution #9-2011 that authorizes the mayor to execute an agreement with the Dent County Fall Festival Association for the leasing of The Commons for the annual 4^th of July Fireworks after some wording issues are resolved dealing with liability. The board approved the proposed pay scale changes requested by Director of Public Works Bill Huffman. These included adding a police department position of detective between patrolman and corporal as well as a scale for the Assistant City Clerk that was created by ordinance. They also swapped the pay scales of the laborer and light equipment operator with the scales of the custodian. After the bills were approved, the board went into closed session.

All 4-H/FFA members with market animal projects that will be showing and selling at the Fair this year are encouraged to attend a Fair Pre-Show on Saturday, June 18^th at the Commons livestock barn beginning at 9:00 am.  First-time exhibitors must attend or pay an additional 1% commission fee. Steers should be brought to the pre-show to acquaint them with the arena and for 4-H’ers to practice leading them with the other steers. Instruction will be given on what the judges will be looking for and how best to show your animal. There will also be demonstrations of how to show hogs and lambs. Eric Hosmer drove in the game-winner in the 11th inning to lead the Kansas City Royals to a 3-2 win over the Toronto Blue Jays to start a four game set. The game made a winner of Jaokim Soria (4-3), who went two perfect innings while starter Felipe Paulino was charged with just two runs on three hits with three walks and four strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings for Kansas City. Mike Aviles had an RBI triple in the game. The two teams play again tonight in Kansas City.

The Cardinals had the day off Monday and will begin a three-game set against Houston starting tonight at 6:30 on KSMO radio. The Cards lead Milwaukee by 1 1/2 games in the National League Central Division.

The St. Louis Blues inked defenseman Roman Polak to a five-year contract extension on Thursday. Financial terms were not disclosed by the club, but the Post Dispatch reported it is worth $13.75 million.  Polak is in line to receive $2 million for the upcoming season one which was shortened due to a severed tendon in his right wrist, $2.45 in 2012-13 and $3.1 million for the final three seasons, according to the paper. The 25-year-old tallied three goals and 12 points in 55 games for St. Louis last season.

Jack Clark Day at the ballpark has been rescheduled for Sunday, June 26^th. Registration is free for boys are 8–15. Boys age 8-12 will be able to participate in a clinic from 2:00 to 3:30 pm and boys age 13-15 the clinic will be held from 3:30 to 5:00 pm. Be sure and sign up for Jack Clark Day at the ballpark and get some baseball tips from a former Cardinal legend. That’s Jack Clark Day at the ballpark rescheduled Sunday, June 26^th.
