The Salem Police Department released their reports involving property damage, thefts and shoplifting. On May 30th at 12:24 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to the 500 block of East Center in reference to property damage. The report revealed that person(s) unknown damaged the gas door on a blue 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser that was parked in the parking lot. The value of the damage is $50 and the report is under investigation. Later that same evening at 9:30, an officer was sent to the 300 block of West Franklin in reference to a theft from a vehicle. The report revealed that person(s) unknown entered a blue 1993 Ford Ranger and took a JVC stereo CD player and six CD’s. The property is valued at $180 and the report is under investigation. On June 1st at 1:20 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to Cousins Pawn on Highway 32 in reference to a robbery. The report revealed a 47-year old Salem male assaulted and took over $600 by force from a 72-year old Salem male. Further investigation led to the arrest of Paul Crabtree. Crabtree was charged with one felony count of robbery in the second degree with bond at $15,000 and one misdemeanor count of elder abuse with bond set at $1,000. He was also charged with one felony count of theft/stealing a controlled substance and one felony count of possession of marijuana with bond set at $10,000. Later the same afternoon at 5:01, an officer was sent to Wal-Mart in reference to shoplifting. The report led to the arrest of a 46-year old male from Licking for stealing. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Anyone with any information regarding these incidents is asked to contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242. 

The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce will again host their “Yard of the Month” contest for June, July and August 2007. Each month, a winner will be selected and presented with a prize. Entries are judged on excellent curb appeal, a well maintained and manicured yard, creativity, an array of colors (plants, flowers & decorations) and seasonal additions. Anyone can nominate a yard by contacting the Chamber. Entry forms and complete rules are available at the Chamber office located at 200 South Main Street in the Visitor’s Center. Entries can also be called in at 573-729-6900. Entries for the June contest should be submitted by June 22, 2007.

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources will hold an open house on Saturday, June 9th, at Montauk State Park near Salem.  The open house will be held from 8:15 AM to 9:15 PM in the outdoor amphitheater located in the park's campground.  The Open House is open to the public. Representatives from the park will be on hand to meet attendees, discuss future plans for park improvements and answer questions. The open house is part of an ongoing effort by the department to ensure that citizens have input on facilities and services offered in state parks and historic sites. Montauk State Park is located 22 miles southwest of Salem on Highway 119 in Dent County. People requiring special services or accommodations to attend the meeting can make arrangements by calling the park directly at (573) 548-2201 or by calling the Department of Natural Resources toll free at 1-800-334-6946.

Ozark Riverways Heritage Days is coming to Big Spring on Saturday, June 9th with an exciting day of demonstrations and entertainment. Among the performers during Heritage Days are Van, Vernon and John Colbert joined by their cousin Vernon Long Jr. from Willow Springs.  Other performers on that day will include Tom Rowley on guitar and Renee Wood on tin whistle playing Traditional Dance Music of Ireland. Bring your whole family for a pleasant time out at Big Spring. Big Spring is located four miles south of Van Buren, Missouri, on State Route 103.  You may want to bring a blanket or lawn chair for the concerts.  This event is free and all are welcome.  For more information call 573-323-4236.

So Ryan Ludwick and Albert Pujols homered in the decisive seventh inning as the St. Louis Cardinals rallied for a 6-4 win over the Cincinnati Reds in the second of a three-game set at Busch Stadium. In the 7th inning, Ludwick led off with his first homer of the year to tie the game, and after a David Eckstein single, Pujols hit his 12th homer. Brad Thompson lasted six innings, giving up four runs on seven hits, while walking two and striking out two. Tyler Johnson (1-0) threw a scoreless seventh to earn the win, while Jason Isringhausen got the last three outs for his 14th save in 15 opportunities for the Cardinals, who have won six of seven. The Cards and Reds will play tonight at 7:00 and you can hear the game on KSMO.

Brian Bannister out-dueled Paul Byrd, and Ryan Shealy homered and drove in two runs to lift the Kansas City Royals over the Cleveland Indians, 4-3, in the second game of a three-game set at Jacobs Field. Bannister (2-3) held the Indians to a run on five hits and struck out two without issuing a walk over seven innings. The second-year hurler was coming off his best start of the 2007 campaign, when he tossed eight innings of one- run, two-hit ball to defeat Tampa Bay last Friday. Mark Teahen had two hits and an RBI, while David DeJesus also knocked in a run for Kansas City, which put the brakes on a three-game skid. Joey Gathright, recalled from Triple-A Omaha before the game, had two hits, a stolen base, sacrifice bunt and a run scored. The Royals and Indians will play again this afternoon.

Funeral services for Richard E. Cavanaugh of Cuba, age 74, will be held today at 10:00 at the James & Gahr Chapel in St. James. Interment will be in the Adams Cemetery in Phelps County.

Funeral services for Mildred Mae Harrison of Eminence, age 79, will be today at 11:00 at the Duncan Funeral Home in Eminence. Interment will be in the Flatwoods Cemetery in Eminence.

Graveside services for Ella Mae Clark of St. Louis, formerly of Gladden, age 83, will be held today at 2:00 at the Chrisco Cemetery in Shannon County. Visitation will be held today from noon until 1:00 at the James and Gahr Chapel in Salem.

Funeral services for Ardean S. Baker of Salem, age 84, will be held Friday at 1:00 at Wilson Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Dry Fork Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Dry Fork Cemetery.
