The City of Salem Pool repairs are complete and the pool is now ready for the summer and the first day will be today. In case of inclement weather or if you have any questions, please make sure you call ahead at 729-6228.
The Dent County Commissioners met Thursday morning for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that various amounts of rain were received throughout the county so crews would be out checking roads and bridges for washouts at various locations, including county roads 6080, 6670, and 5550. Patch grading will also be taking place on county road 5550. Crews would be hauling material to county road 6410 while patching of chip and seal will take place on county roads 4120 and 4180. Personnel would be checking brakes on truck #66 and servicing dump truck #115. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson stated that grading would be done on county roads 2340 and 4290 and crews would be cutting brush on county road 6150. Crews would also be hauling material to county road 4290 as well as patching washouts at various locations and screening brown rock. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles participated in a conference call with Legal Policy Advisor Chris Piper of the governor’s office to discuss various bills impacting the county’s budgets. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley stated that July 9th is the last day to register to vote for the August 5th primary election. She also said that she got word that the governor will be signing Senate Bill #892, which would move the Presidential primary election to March. Spencer Jones and Toby Stevenson from Great Rivers Associates came in to discuss the bridge replacement project on the bridge over Spring Creek on county road 3210. MoDOT has approved it and are awaiting a response from the Federal Highway Administration, which should come by the end of the week. The Commissioners voted 3-0 to authorize Great Rivers Associates to seek bids upon receipt of approval from the Federal Highway Administration. Bids will be opened on July 10th at 10:00 a.m. Work on the bridge replacement could start early to mid August and is estimated to take 60 to 75 days to complete. The Commissioners then approved bills to be paid. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held Monday morning at 9:00 in the Dent County Courthouse and that meeting is open to the public.
The Salem Police Department released their report for the month of May. During the month, they wrote six equipment repair orders, 33 summons to appear in court, 26 warning tickets, and 33 traffic tickets. The Salem Police Department investigated 18 accidents, two assaults, two burglaries, one report of city prohibited weapons, six reports of disorderly conduct, two reports of domestic assault, five reports of domestic violence, one report of driving while intoxicated, one report of elder abuse, one report of forgery, one report of fraudulent use of a credit and/or debit device, one report of leaving the scene of an accident and five reports of lost and/or stolen license plates and/or tags. The department also investigated one report of a missing and/or runaway juvenile, one report for open containers, one report of a peace disturbance, one report of a probation and/or parole violation, eight reports of property damage, one report of resisting and/or interfering with an arrest, 23 reports of stealing, one report of tampering, one report of a towed vehicle, two reports of trespassing, one report of a violation of an exparte and/or full order of protection and two 96-hour commitments. They also investigated one report of distributing/ delivering/manufacturing/producing/possessing a controlled substance, one report of distribution of a controlled substance near schools, four reports of possession of marijuana, and three reports of possession of drug paraphernalia. The Salem Police Department also conducted one death investigation. The police department received 1,814 calls for service during the month, handled 143 walk-ins to the station, and redirected 92 calls to the animal control officer. They spent 23 hours in court testifying, four hours as court bailiff and spent six hours teaching D.A.R.E. The calls in May included 22 calls for escorts, four calls for prowlers, three calls for a suspicious person and/or vehicles, seven intoxicated pedestrian calls, 17 calls for domestic disputes, and five calls for a wrecker. There were 11 911 calls, 16 calls for peace disturbances, five calls for alarms sounding, nine calls for fights in progress, 10 ambulance assist calls, two calls for drag racing and/or speeding vehicles, and one fire call. The Salem Police Department drove a total of 9,882 miles and arrested 32 males and 8 females during the month of May.
The public is invited to bring their ideas to an informational meeting at Montauk State Park on Saturday, June 7th. The open house style meeting will be held from 1:00 to 5:00 pm at the Searcy meeting room located next to the park office. Park representatives will provide information on recent accomplishments and future plans for the facility and will be available to answer questions. Visitors are invited to share comments and suggestions about park services and operations. This open house is part of an ongoing effort by Missouri State Parks to ensure citizens have input regarding the facilities and services offered in state parks and historic sites. Montauk State Park is located 22 miles southwest of Salem on Highway 119 in Dent County. Get hooked on fishing with the Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) Free Fishing Days Saturday, June 7th and Sunday, June 8th. During Free Fishing Days, anyone can fish in the Show-Me State without having to buy a fishing permit, trout stamp, or trout park daily tag. Normal regulations remain in effect, such as limits on size and number of fish an angler can keep. Some private fishing areas may still require permits, and trespass laws remain in effect on private property. Conservation makes Missouri a great place to fish, and Free Fishing Days encourages people to sample the state's abundant fishing opportunities. Missouri is blessed with more than a million acres of surface water, and most of it provides great fishing. According to MDC, more than 200 different fish species are found in Missouri, with 40 of them being game fish for the state’s more than 1.1 million anglers. Conservation also enriches Missouri’s economy and Missourians’ quality of life. Fishing in the state generates more than a billion dollars for local communities and the state’s economy, and supports thousands of jobs. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will hold a public auction of various used vehicles and equipment on Saturday, June 7th, starting at 10:00 a.m. at its Salem Maintenance Center located at the junction of Highway 72 and Highway 32 in Salem. The auction will feature nearly 200 items including dozens of boats, vehicles, and trailers, along with outboard motors, tractors, dozers, farm equipment, and more. Those interested can view auction items today at the Salem Maintenance Center from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pre-registration today is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Registration the day of the sale begins at 7:30 a.m. For a list of auction items and procedures, visit mdc.mo.gov/node/5585. Salvador Perez drove in the winning run in the sixth inning to help the Kansas City Royals to a 3-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in the finale of a four-game, home-and-home set Thursday at Kauffman Stadium. Eric Hosmer and Norichika Aoki each drove in a run, while Yordano Ventura (3-5) snapped a four-start losing streak after giving up two runs on seven hits over six innings for the Royals, who took three of four in the set. Matt Carpenter and Peter Bourjos each had an RBI for the Cardinals, who have dropped seven of their last nine games. Michael Wacha (4-4) allowed three runs on seven hits over six innings. The Cardinals left seven men on base as the team was 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position. The Royals will start a four-game series with the New York Yankees tonight. The Cardinals will be in Toronto tonight to start a three-game series with the Blue Jays and you can hear it on KSMO Radio starting with the pre-game show at 5:30.

Funeral services for Mike Reed of Rolla, and formerly of Salem, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials can be made to the Education Fund for Wesley Reed.
Funeral services for Dirk Farrin Smith of Black, age 59, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Locust Grove United Baptist Church at Oates. Interment will be in the Myers Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Locust Grove United Baptist Church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.
A celebration of life for Dr. Kevin Brewer of Rolla, age 62, will be held today from 5:00 to 8:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
Funeral services for Gertrude Hemme of Springfield and formerly of St. James, age 94, will be held Monday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be Sunday from 2:00 to 4:00. Interment will be in the Ozark Hills Memorial Gardens in Rolla.
