The City of Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Monday night at the city hall council chambers. The board heard from John Jacobs from Vaughn Pool and Spa in Rolla about the pool filter delay, and he explained that the manufacturer received the order from Great Plains Filter, the distributor for Vaughn Pool and Spa, on March 4th and promised delivery by the third week of April, but were sidetracked with a bigger order from Orlando, Florida. Vaughn delivered the filter Friday afternoon at 2:30 and the city workers had the filter in place by 4:00. Mayor Gary Brown said that the pool would open today and there will be FREE swimming today, Thursday and Friday. The delay in receiving the filter put the opening of the pool two weeks behind. After the electric department employees introduced themselves, and the sewer and water department personnel introduced themselves, the board heard from Bill Huffman about Well #7 at the Industrial Park which is currently not operational due to sand and mud in the casing. The city is trying to find out if the well is first, usable, and second, if the casing problem can be repaired. Huffman explained the company will have to clean out the old hole, video it to see where the problem is, then if it can be repaired, re-install a smaller casing inside the old one and grout it in, and then clean it out. The board accepted the bid of $63,415 from Flynn Drilling Company in Rolla to do all the work, but Huffman estimated that it would cost about $15,000 to $18,000 to clean it out and video it at which time a decision would be made to proceed or stop. The bid does not include the dismantling of the current pump house and also does not include the re-installation of the pump. The board accepted a bid from David Wilkinson for the cutting, bailing and removal of hay from the soccer fields and airport for $375, and they accepted a bid from Red Cummings of $110.25 for 23 pieces of 6” by 10’ used pipe. Alderman Jim McDaniels wants the city to treat any standing water to help try to reduce the mosquito population, and he is also asking all citizens to eliminate any standing water on their own property of over 24 hours to assist in the effort. McDaniels asked the superintendents on hand to try and come up with a plan to conserve fuel consumption.  Mayor Gary Brown said that the city would be spraying weeds on city streets beginning Thursday, and that MoDOT will be sending the paperwork to the city for the annexation of Highway 72 out to the hospital. Brown said that the city plans to budget $12,000 for fireworks in the next budget, and that budget meetings have be set up for June 7, 11, 14, 21 and 26 to help prepare for next year’s budget. The board approved allowing the mayor to discuss with the MRPC the preparation of the Dream Application for the city not to exceed $1,000. The board approved Bill #3099 that amends the 2006-2007 budget to create the “Economic Development Home Loan Fund,” and they approved setting a public hearing for the annexation of the property owned by Joyce Nash at #6 Great Oaks Subdivision for 6:45 on July 2^nd. After the bills were approved, the board went into closed session.

The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released their report for the month of May. For the month, there were 76 9-1-1- calls, in which all were responded to with five of the calls being prank calls. The Department served 203 papers consisting of 114 civil papers, 79 criminal papers and they served ten notices to vacate, plus they served 32 felony warrants and 25 misdemeanor warrants. During the month, there were seven drug arrests and nine domestic disturbance calls were addressed. The Sheriff’s Department assisted on 11 traffic accidents and conducted two death investigations. For the month of May, the Sheriff’s Department investigated five burglaries, two assaults, eight thefts and four property damage reports. The Dent County Sheriff’s Department handled a total of 216 calls during the month and conducted 12 community-policing appearances. In the Dent County Jail Report for May, there were 17 transfers to or from other departments, and one transfer to a mental facility. During the month of May, the sheriff’s department drove a total of 19,524 miles on criminal investigations, patrolling and prisoner transportation.

Funeral services for Richard E. Cavanaugh of Cuba, age 74, will be held Thursday at 10:00 at the James & Gahr Chapel in St. James.  Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00.  Interment will be in the Adams Cemetery in Phelps County.

Funeral services for Mildred Mae Harrison of Eminence, age 79, will be Thursday at 11:00 at the Duncan Funeral Home in Eminence. Visitation will be tonight from 3:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Flatwoods Cemetery in Eminence.

Graveside services for Ella Mae Clark of St. Louis, formerly of Gladden, age 83, will be held Thursday at 2:00 at the Chrisco Cemetery in Shannon County. Visitation will be held Thursday from noon until 1:00 at the James and Gahr Chapel in Salem.
