The City of Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Monday night at the city hall council chambers. The board heard from John Jacobs from Vaughn Pool and Spa in Rolla about the pool filter delay, and he explained that the manufacturer received the order from Great Plains Filter, the distributor for Vaughn Pool and Spa, on March 4th and promised delivery by the third week of April, but were sidetracked with a bigger order from Orlando, Florida. Vaughn delivered the filter Friday afternoon at 2:30 and the city workers had the filter in place by 4:00. Mayor Gary Brown said that the pool would open today and there will be FREE swimming today, Thursday and Friday. The delay in receiving the filter put the opening of the pool two weeks behind. After the electric department employees introduced themselves, and the sewer and water department personnel introduced themselves, the board heard from Bill Huffman about Well #7 at the Industrial Park which is currently not operational due to sand and mud in the casing. The city is trying to find out if the well is first, usable, and second, if the casing problem can be repaired. Huffman explained the company will have to clean out the old hole, video it to see where the problem is, then if it can be repaired, re-install a smaller casing inside the old one and grout it in, and then clean it out. The board accepted the bid of $63,415 from Flynn Drilling Company in Rolla to do all the work, but Huffman estimated that it would cost about $15,000 to $18,000 to clean it out and video it at which time a decision would be made to proceed or stop. The bid does not include the dismantling of the current pump house and also does not include the re-installation of the pump. The board accepted a bid from David Wilkinson for the cutting, bailing and removal of hay from the soccer fields and airport for $375, and they accepted a bid from Red Cummings of $110.25 for 23 pieces of 6” by 10’ used pipe. Alderman Jim McDaniels wants the city to treat any standing water to help try to reduce the mosquito population, and he is also asking all citizens to eliminate any standing water on their own property of over 24 hours to assist in the effort. McDaniels asked the superintendents on hand to try and come up with a plan to conserve fuel consumption.  Mayor Gary Brown said that the city would be spraying weeds on city streets beginning Thursday, and that MoDOT will be sending the paperwork to the city for the annexation of Highway 72 out to the hospital. Brown said that the city plans to budget $12,000 for fireworks in the next budget, and that budget meetings have be set up for June 7, 11, 14, 21 and 26 to help prepare for next year’s budget. The board approved allowing the mayor to discuss with the MRPC the preparation of the Dream Application for the city not to exceed $1,000. The board approved Bill #3099 that amends the 2006-2007 budget to create the “Economic Development Home Loan Fund,” and they approved setting a public hearing for the annexation of the property owned by Joyce Nash at #6 Great Oaks Subdivision for 6:45 on July 2nd. After the bills were approved, the board went into closed session.

So Taguchi's line drive to right in the ninth inning found plenty of open space over the drawn-in outfield, giving St. Louis a 4-3 victory over Cincinnati in the opener of a three-game set. Without a win in their last at-bat on the season, the Cardinals turned to Taguchi, who has quickly become Mr. Clutch late in games. His homer in the 10th inning Sunday propelled St. Louis past Houston, 8-6. Jason Isringhausen (3-0) picked up the victory another a ninth inning featuring two strikeouts and two walks. Juan Encarnacion hit a solo home run and David Eckstein set the table with a double and two singles for the Cardinals, who continued their climb up the National League Central standings with their fifth win in six games, staying 6.5 games behind Milwaukee in second place. Cardinals starter Todd Wellemeyer surrendered two runs on just two hits but six walks with four strikeouts over 3 2/3 frames. St. Louis catcher Gary Bennett left the game in the top of the second after being hit in the neck with a pitch. The Cards and Reds will play again tonight at 7:00 and you can hear the game on KSMO.

C.C Sabathia tossed a five-hit shutout as Cleveland edged Kansas City, 1-0, in the opener of a three-game set at Jacobs Field. Sabathia (9-1) did not walk a batter and fanned eight en route to his fifth career shutout and 13th career complete game. Sabathia also joined John Lackey of the LA Angels of Anaheim atop the major leagues with nine wins. Franklin Gutierrez accounted for the only offense of the game with a solo homer in the third inning for the Indians, who snapped a modest two-game skid. Jorge De La Rosa (4-6) was the hard-luck loser for the Royals, who lost their third straight game and for the 10th time in 12 tries. The southpaw allowed just one run on five hits in 7 1/3 innings. De La Rosa walked two and fanned a career-best seven in the game. Mike Sweeney was 2-of-3 in the game for the Royals. The Royals and Indians play again tonight.

The Miami Dolphins finally completed the deal that has been in the works for months, sending a fifth-round draft pick to the Kansas City Chiefs for quarterback Trent Green. Green, who will be 37 at the start of the 2007 season, will likely be the de facto starter when the Dolphins enter training camp, signaling an end to the brief Daunte Culpepper era in Miami. Green has now played for five different teams in the NFL in his 15-year career.
