The Salem Board of Aldermen met Monday night for their regular meeting at the City Hall Council Chambers. Prior to the regular meeting, the Planning and Zoning Commission heard from Dominic Biunno representing the Sacred Heart Catholic Church to get a conditional use permit on the erecting of a radio tower at 1300 West Scenic Rivers Blvd. Biunno didn’t have all the answers for the Planning and Zoning Commission and they asked him to get more information and tabled the request until a later date. The Commission elected Jerry Craig as the Chairperson, Keith Inman as the Vice-Chairperson and Dr. Wayne Bertz as the Secretary. In the regular Board of Aldermen meeting, Caleb Watts representing the Salem Chamber Choir, asked the city to allow a 5K run to help raise funds to send the choir to Carnegie Hall in New York. The 5K run would be held on July 26th starting at 9:00 at the firehouse and the Board approved the request. City Attorney William Camm Seay reported the Salem R-80 School Insurance covers the liability of the FFA students using the firing range, but he said that he had not received a contract or a request to prepare a contract for the services. Salem Police Chief Keith Steelman said he would get in touch with FFA Advisor Heather Johnson about getting an agreement put together. City Administrator Ray Walden reported the city pool would be opening soon and the water line project on McArthur is right on schedule. He said new light poles have been set at the Al Brown Fields and lights should be up in a week or so for night games to begin. He said he would be attending the Missouri Public Utility Alliance meeting on Thursday and the city is going out for bid for engineering services. Walden reported that budget preparation is beginning and meetings would be set up in the next two weeks. Mayor J.J. Tune reported that he and Alderwoman Molly Zettel attended a meeting of the Community Foundation of the Ozarks and talked about grants. Tune discussed a number of issues to be addressed including the tennis courts that need to be resurfaced, insurance bids and a possible new industry interested in Salem. Tune again brought up allowing public comments on non-agenda items and Alderwoman Zettel asked for consideration for addressing the issue, but as in previous meetings, there was no second. The board approved the appointment of John Maledy, Dennis Gott, Steve Spencer, Jim Heavin and Devin Goad to the airport board with Aldermen Powell as the aldermen representative. The board is still one member short. The board approved adding John Hambacker and Catherine Dent to the Utility Board with Alderwoman Molly Zettel to serve as the chairperson. The board then went into closed session where the aldermen approved an agreement with the Dent County Animal Welfare Society with a 4-0 vote and also approved the city personal property and real estate tax collection agreement with Dent County by another 4-0 vote. The meeting was then adjourned. The Board of Alderman will hold a workshop, called by Alderman Philip Giacomelli, this Thursday at the City Hall Council Chambers beginning at 5:00 pm. The workshop will be to discuss employee health insurance and the workshop is open to the public. An accident occurred at 10:15 Tuesday morning in Texas County on Highway 32 about six miles west of Licking.
