An accident occurred at 11:15 Saturday night on Dent County Road 5160, about four miles east of Salem that a left a pedestrian with serious injuries. According to the highway patrol report, an unknown ATV was traveling eastbound on Dent County Road 5160 when the ATV struck 44-year-old Ronald Conaway of Salem who was in the roadway, and then the ATV continued on. Conaway suffered serious injuries and was transported by Salem Ambulance and then by Air Evac to St Johns Hospital in St Louis.

The Salem High School 2010 Graduation photos can be picked up through Thursday, June 10th at the High School office between the hours of 8:00 am and 3:00 pm.

The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors held their monthly meeting Tuesday at the fire station. After approval of the minutes from the previous meeting, bills were discussed and also approved. The board decided the firefighters would pay for their shirts from their fund.  Board Member Craig Smith reported on the finance committee meeting.  The main items are that the District board set goals for facilities and equipment improvement and work towards these goals. The board will have a list of goals at the next meeting to set priorities and terms of completion. There were a total of 20 fire calls in May including one vehicle fire, three landing zones were created, there were eight ambulance assist calls, two for motor vehicles, one mutual aid call, one hazmat call, one CO2 call, one other call, one call for a meeting and one training callThis makes a total of 171 calls for the year. In old business, the District facility usage was tabled until next meeting. Board member Liz Gruendel reported that she has approached various foundations for help with grant money with no response at this time. Gruendel also recommended that the district do a USDA grant for the parking lot repair and replacement. In new business, Fire Chief Nash’s evaluation and pay discussion will be moved to the physical yearend for budgeting purposes. Chief Nash reported that the officer replacement is in the works and the officers have met and discussed a course of action to implement the plan. Nash reported that the inventory was still in the works and at this time they are working on checking the individual equipment inventory in each vehicle to ensure the lists are correct. Chief Nash also reported the Board required class is in place and scheduled for August 21st. The district will have to provide the meal for attendees. Chief Nash reported to the board that Grants for narrow band radio equipment and a vehiclehave been submitted. Chief Nash also reported to the board that in accordance with Homeland Security Presidential Directive/HSPD-5, the District including all elected board members will have to become NIMS (National Incident Management System) certified. This includes different classes that must be taken and passed. Also Chief Nash reported that this could have an adverse effect on grants in the future if not in compliance. Chief Nash reported that the renewal of the radio license will be due in 2013 but all radios will have to be narrow band. Also there will be a change in the frequencies that will be assigned and that the District needs to start now in getting prepared. Most all of the District radios are ready but two will have to be updated or replaced. With that Chief Nash discussed the radio in truck 82. At current, the District has a loaner from the radio company, which can be purchased or the District can purchase a new radio. The Board discussed the issue and opted to keep the used radio. The next meeting of the Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors was then set for July 6th at the fire station and will begin at 6:00 pm.

The United States Attorney’s Office announced that 37-year old Aaron Hunter of St. James, pleaded guilty to falsifying official union documents while President of the Firefighters Local 108 in 2008 and 2009. In his plea agreement, Hunter admitted he falsified reports sent to the United States Department of Labor to hide his unauthorized diversion of $30,000 in union funds for his own personal use. Hunter appeared before U.S. District Judge Rodney W. Sippel in St. Louis. He now faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison and/or fines up to $250,000 when he is sentenced on September 3, 2010.  Hunter also agreed to make restitution to the union. The case was investigated by the U.S. Department of Labor - Office of Labor Management Standards.  Tom Albus handled the case for the U.S. Attorney's Office.

An Advanced Grazing School will be held on Thursday and Friday, June 17th and 18th at the University of Missouri Wurdack Farm near Cook Station. This school is designed for those individuals who have previously attended a basic Management Intensive Grazing school or who have been actively using managed grazing on their farms. This course will feature advanced instruction on many of the concepts necessary to take your skills as a grass farmer and livestock producer to the next level. Topics for the school include: advanced techniques for measuring forage; availability and pasture allocation; grazing livestock feed and mineral supplementation; frame/disposition/body condition scoring of livestock; advanced soil health and fertility management; winter grazing, and grazing management techniques. The school will feature tours and hands-on instruction at the MU Wurdack Farm and the Denny and Mary Beth Pogue Farm. The cost is $50 person, $75 for a farm couple and a $25 per person deposit if needed by June 10th. Corey Hart drove in the game-winning run with a 10th-inning sacrifice fly to push Milwaukee past St. Louis 4-3 to avoid a series sweep at Busch Stadium. Jason Motte (2-2) absorbed the loss after allowing the decisive run on a pair of hits in his lone inning of work for the Cardinals, who had a three-game win streak snapped and fell for just a second time in seven contests. Albert Pujols and Colby Rasmus added solo homers in the loss. The Cardinals travel to the West Coast as they will start a series with the L.A. Dodgers tonight starting with the Dugout Show at 8:50 on KSMO.

Jose Guillen hit a three-run homer to back a strong start from Brian Bannister, as the Kansas City Royals topped the Detroit Tigers, 7-2, in the rubber match of a three-game series. Bannister (6-3) limited Detroit to two runs in 7 1/3 innings to take the win for a fifth consecutive start. He gave up five hits, walked one, struck out five, and did not allow a home run for the first time in 10 starts. Yuniesky Betancourt doubled twice and drove in two for Kansas City, which ended its homestand with a 3-4 mark. The Royals have the day off but will begin a six-game road trip Tuesday at Minnesota.

The St. Louis Cardinals have signed outfielder Randy Winn, who was designated for assignment by the New York Yankees on May 28. He owns a career batting average of .285 with a .344 OBP, 107 homers and 210 stolen bases in 1,630 games. On Saturday, the Cardinals also optioned outfielder Jon Jay to Triple-A Memphis and transferred pitcher Kyle Lohse to the 60-day disabled list. Lohse is out after having forearm surgery May 28, while Jay hit .302 (13- for-43) with a homer in 26 games this season for St. Louis.

The Salem Lady Tiger Softball Summer Camp will he held July 12th thru 15th and July 19th thru 22nd from 8:00 am to 11:00 am for girl's entering 9th through 12 grades and from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm for girl's entering 6th through 8th grades. The Salem Lady Tiger Softball Summer Camp will be held at the blue field next to the old armory, the cost is $20 per camper and each camper will receive a camp T-shirt. Funeral services for Terry Douglas Warren of Salem, age 50, will be held Wednesday morning at 11;00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 Tuesday night. Interment will be in the Pilgrim’s Rest Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Terry Warren family.

Funeral services for Bernell Burlyn Wisdom of Salem, age 81, will be private at a later date. All the arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Leukemia Foundation.

Funeral services for Melvin LeRoy Arganbright of Salem, age 61, will be held at a later date. All arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary of Salem.
