The Graduation Photos are in!! They can be picked up at the Salem High School Office between 8:00 am and 3:00 pm until this Friday, June 5
th. After that, the photos can be picked up at the Superintendent’s Office between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday.
The Salem Police Department released their reports involving property damage, burglaries and a house fire. On Friday, May 29th at 9:30 a.m. an officer was contacted at the station in reference to property damage. The report revealed that sometime that morning a passenger side window of a 1995 Hyundai car had been broken out while parked in the 100 block of East Fifth Street. Later that evening at 7:15 p.m., an officer was detailed to the 600 block of South Askins in reference to a burglary. The report revealed that between May 14th and 29th, a person or persons unknown had entered the residence without permission and taken a Mossberg 12-gauge shotgun valued at $150, a Marlin bolt action 22 magnum rifle valued at $250 and a Poulan Pro chainsaw valued at $250. At 8:00 p.m. that same evening an officer was dispatched to the 1000 block of Highway 19 South in reference to a burglary. The report revealed that sometime that day, a person or persons unknown had entered the residence without permission and took $170 cash and a Crossman pellet rifle. On Saturday, May 30th at 12:30 a.m. officers were sent to the 900 block of South Pershing in reference to a house fire. The investigation revealed 2 male subjects were observed running from the home immediately after the fire was reported. Further investigation led to the arrest of 23-year old Andrew Paul Steelman and 24-year old Donald James Cramer for Second Degree Arson. Both subjects were incarcerated and arraigned in the Dent County Associate Court on Monday. At 9:20 a.m. that same morning, an officer was detailed to the 100 block of South Jackson in reference to property damage. The report revealed that sometime the previous night, a person or persons unknown had slashed two tires on a 2000 Ford Mustang while parked at the residence. Anyone with any information regarding the property damage reports, or the burglaries, which are still under investigation, is asked to please contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.
The Meramec Regional Planning Commission, in cooperation with the Meramec Community Enhancement Corporation and the Phelps County PHA Family Self-Sufficiency Program, will host a free homeownership workshop on Tuesday, June 9th at the Meramec Regional Planning Commission located at #4 Industrial Drive in St. James. The workshop is scheduled from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sheri Schwickerath of the USDA Rural Development will present information on obtaining a credit report and how to maintain a good credit history. The class is offered at no cost, on a first-come, first-served basis. Pre-registration is requested. To register, persons should contact Deeann Turbeville by Monday, June 8th at (573) 265-4200, ext. 42. A credit report can play a large role on a family’s ability to purchase a home. This workshop will show participants how to get a copy of their reports, help them understand what information is on credit reports, what they need to do to maintain a good credit rating, and how they can improve their credit score by addressing problems identified on the report.
It’s not too early to start thinking about getting ready for 4-H Achievement Day on Monday, July 20th. Achievement Day is a day that all 4-H members from the 4-H club in the county get together to share what they have made and learned in 4-H this year. There are a variety of categories that a member can choose including; project exhibits, public speaking, fashion revue, judging contests, demonstrations, club skits, interviews and skill-a-thons. There is something for everyone. Each club is challenged to participate in the Achievement Day. The best exhibits will be selected to be on display in the 4-H Exhibit Building at the Missouri State Fair. For more information contact Linda Shelton by calling 729-3196.
The City of Salem Finance Committee will hold a meeting, called by Mayor Gary Brown, on Thursday, June 4th at the City Hall Council Chambers beginning at 10:00 am, to discuss the 2009/2010 budget. The meeting of the City of Salem Finance Committee is open to the public.
On Monday, June 22nd, the Salem Rotary Club and the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce will hold a joint membership meeting at My Place Restaurant beginning at noon. Division President of US Foodservice Gary Clark will be the guest speaker. If you are planning to attend, please RSVP by Thursday, June 18th to be included in the lunch count. Laynce Nix smacked a pair of homers and drove in four runs as the Reds routed the St. Louis Cardinals, 9-3, in the third portion of a four-game series. Brandon Phillips went 3-for-5 with a homer, three RBI and three runs scored for Cincinnati, which had lost four of five coming into the contest. Brendan Ryan had two hits and an RBI for St. Louis, which lost for the third time in four tries. Cardinals' starter Kyle Lohse (4-4) departed in the third inning due to a recurrence of right forearm discomfort. Lohse was pulled because of tightness in the area. Lohse was charged with four hits and two runs, including one earned, gave up a bunt single to Cueto to start the third, the play he was injured on. He was replaced by Blaine Boyer. The Cards and Reds wrap up their series tonight at 6:55 on KSMO Radio.
Ben Zobrist hit a grand slam and Jeff Niemann tossed his first major league complete game, giving up only two hits, as the Tampa Bay Rays routed the Kansas City Royals, 9-0, in the second of a three-game set at Tropicana Field. Brian Bannister (4-3) suffered the loss after getting roughed up for nine runs on eight hits. He also had three walks and two strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings of work. Kansas City has dropped six in a row and 11 of the last 13. They will finish up their series with Tampa Bay this afternoon.

Funeral services for Lorraine Harrison of St. James, age 68, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Make A Wish Foundation.
Funeral services for Larry Williamson of St. James, age 69, will be held Saturday at 11:30 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be Friday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Pancreatic Cancer Research or the Missouri Baptist Children’s Home.
Graveside Services for J. Richene Emory Lanbach of Willow Springs, age 74, will be held on Saturday, June 13th at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.
A Memorial Service for William J. Higginbotham of Rolla, age 72, will be held Saturday, June 20th at 7:00 at the Central Community Church in Rolla. Memorials are suggested to the Central Community Church of God or the American Cancer Society. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
Funeral services for John Parker of St. James, age 81, are incomplete and are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
A memorial service for Daniel L. Ivicsics of Salem, age 65, will be held at a later date and arrangements are under the direction of James and Gahr Mortuary.
