The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2470, 2480, 5130, 5170, 5180 and 5380. He said that rock would be hauled to Dent County Roads 2460 and 5580 and a crew would be patching chip and seal throughout the district. Purcell went on to say that crews continue to haul debris in from the May 8
th storm. The debris is piling up at the Road and Bridge Department, because the Department of Natural Resources has denied the county access to a dump, so the Commission is looking into the possibility of obtaining a burn permit from DNR to burn the pile or having it made into chips. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 3250, 3260, 3270, 3273 and 3275. Larson also said that grading would be done and rock would be hauled to Dent County Roads 2300, 4280 and 6130. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that Service Pro continues the clean up effort in the Judicial Building. He said insulation and ceiling tiles still need to be put back in place, but other than that most of the building has been cleaned. Skiles did say the probation and parole officers are working out of the Judicial Building Annex and the Recorder of Deeds is also working out of the those offices. David Rekowski came by the meeting to ask the commission again what they planned on doing about Dent County Road 4290. Rekowski feels the road is wider than it needs to be and says he cannot receive mail because the road is too low in front of his mailbox. Commissioner Larson met with him to look at the road to see what and if anything needs to be done to the road. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.
The Dent County Fire Protection District released their reports involving structure fires. On Friday, May 30th at 37 minutes past midnight, the Dent County Fire Protection District was paged out to a structure fire in the 900 block of South Pershing. Upon arrival 10 firefighters found a one-story wood frame structure with visible flames and smoke coming from the structure. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Missouri State Fire Marshall’s Office, and the Salem Police Department who arrested two individuals on arson charges. The fire was brought under control at 12:47. On Monday, June 1st the Dent County Fire Protection District responded to a structure fire at 3:35 in the afternoon on County Road 5070. Upon arrival 11 firefighters found that 50% of the structure was involved with heavy smoke and flames coming from the structure. The scene was brought under control at 6:37 that evening.
An accident happened Thursday, May 28th at 12:52 in the early morning at the intersection of Highway J and Taylor in Salem. According to the Salem Police report, a red 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 driven by James A. Drury of Salem was traveling west on highway J at Taylor and lost control due to wet pavement, traveled across the centerline and ran off the roadway into the Ellerman’s Car Lot striking a parked and unoccupied yellow 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt. The Dodge then veered east striking a parked and unoccupied black 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt and continued south striking a parked and unoccupied black 2006 Scion and a parked and unoccupied blue 2004 Scion all owned by Ellerman’s Car lot before coming to a final rest position. No injuries were reported. The Dodge sustained moderate damage and was towed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem. The yellow Cobalt sustained extensive damage, the black Cobalt and blue Scion sustained moderate damage and the black Scion sustained minor damage.

The SCA All-Conference selections were made for baseball and Salem was well represented. Named to the All-SCA First Team were pitcher Grant Gordon, catcher Brandon Plank, infielder Louis Carroll and outfielder C.J. Smith. Named to the All-SCA Second Team were infielder Andrew Kissir and outfielder Ryan Smith. Aaron Loker as designated hitter or utility player, and Ashton Karr as an infielder were named to the SCA Honorable Mention Team. The SCA Player of the Year honors went to Grant Gordon and the Coach of the Year went to Don Smith. Congratulations Tigers on a great year!!!
Rookie Nick Stavinoha hit the go-ahead two- run double in the sixth inning and five St. Louis relievers combined to no-hit the Reds over the final four frames in a 5-2 victory at Busch Stadium. Albert Pujols also knocked in two runs for St. Louis, which bounced back from a 5-3 loss on Monday. Skip Schumaker had a pair of hits and scored twice. Brad Thompson allowed five hits and a pair of runs in five frames in the start for the Cardinals. Jason Motte (2-1) threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings to get the win, and Ryan Franklin retired the side in order in the ninth for his 13th save. The combination of Trever Miller, Motte, Dennys Reyes, Kyle McClellan and Franklin gave up no hits and only two walks over the final four innings. The Cardinals and Reds play again tonight at 6:55 on KSMO Radio.
Matt Joyce went 3-for-4 with a two-run home run and four RBI as the Tampa Bay Rays downed the Kansas City Royals, 6-2, in the opener of a three-game set. Jose Guillen and Miguel Olivo each hit a solo home run for the Royals, who have lost five straight. Kyle Davies (2-5) was saddled with the loss as he was charged with four runs on three hits with six walks and seven strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings. The Royals and Rays will play again tonight.
Before the game, Kansas City made several roster moves. The team placed outfielder Coco Crisp on the bereavement list and reinstated infielder Tony Pena and pitcher Joakim Soria from the 15-day disabled list. Also, the team placed pitcher Sidney Ponson on the 15-day DL.

Funeral services for Larry Williamson of St. James, age 69, will be held Saturday at 11:30 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be Friday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Pancreatic Cancer Research or the Missouri Baptist Children’s Home.
Graveside Services for J. Richene Emory Lanbach of Willow Springs, age 74, will be held on Saturday, June 13th at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.
A Memorial Service for William J. Higginbotham of Rolla, age 72, will be held Saturday, June 20th at 7:00 at the Central Community Church in Rolla. Memorials are suggested to the Central Community Church of God or the American Cancer Society. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
Funeral services for John Parker of St. James, age 81, are incomplete and are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
