The City of Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Monday evening at the city hall council chambers. Donald Durham was in attendance to in his words “set the record straight” about the accident involving his niece and a Salem police officer. Highway Patrol Officer Ronald Copeland was in attendance to state that he did made reconstructive measurements of the skid marks and determined that the Salem officer was going a minimum of 35.7 MPH plus maybe two to four miles per hour more since the air bags deployed, but nowhere near 70 MPH as some people have said. Copeland said he talked with a witness that was passed by the officer and he said that his lights and siren were on, and he used his air horn when cresting the hill which would nullify the siren. Copeland said that the state statutes allow officers to exceed the speed limit on emergency calls as long as they can operate the vehicle in a safe manor as to not cause property damage or injuries. The collision did cause property damage and did cause an injury. In old business, Mayor Gary Brown said that he and Electric Superintendent Larry Major checked out the 12 poles that Cellnet wanted to use to provide AmerenUE with an advanced metering system and there would not be interference. Brown also checked with Poplar Bluff and Sullivan who said they had no problem with their system. A contract would be ready at the next meeting for the aldermen to review. Mayor Gary Brown said that an additional two-pieces of pipe could be installed at the park in the storm water ditch and they could remove the bridge and plant grass seed to open up more field area. He would have to find the money in this year’s budget to get that done. Brown asked that all those people who have dog pens to please put lime in them to take away the stench. He said that Corporal Kimrey attended an emergency meting in St. James and brought back four $1,600 emergency radios that will be required for use by emergency personnel in 2012. The board then approved Bill #3130 that increased the cost of obtaining a liquor license to sell intoxicating beverage not in excess of 5% to $150.00, for selling intoxicating liquor not in excess of 22 percent for $300.00, and for selling liquor of all types for $750.00. These rates are the highest limits allowed by law. After approving the bills, the board went into closed session to discuss personnel.

The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. At the meeting, District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5420, 6070, 6080, 6110 and 6380. Simpson also said that grading would be done and material would be hauled to Dent County Road 6370, a driveway pipe would be installed on Dent County Road 2410 and a crew would be replacing a culvert on Dent County Road 2440.  District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2403, 2510, 3180, 4330 and 6120. Tune also said that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 3210 and a crew would be on Dent County Road 2300 patching chip and seal. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that the counties sales tax revenue is up $18,000 from this time last year. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley and Commissioner Tune signed off on a project worksheet that will be submitted to FEMA for reimbursement. The worksheet totals $18,000 and is for the repair of Dent County Road 2540, which was heavily damaged due to flooding. At 11:00 the Commission went into closed session with Dent County Prosecuting Attorney Jessica Sparks and Mark Weaver to discuss real estate issues. The next meeting of the Commission will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

The City of Salem Water District released the 2007 Annual Water Quality Report. There were no detected results found and no violations occurred during 2007. The 2007 Annual Water Quality Report is posted at the Salem Public Library, the City of Salem Administrative Offices and KSMO Radio Station for public viewing. Adam Wainwright was well on his way to another dominant start, but Pittsburgh scored four runs in the seventh and added the game-winning tally on Jason Bay's RBI single in the eighth to post a 5-4 victory over St. Louis in the finale of a four-game series. Wainwright's (5-3) demise was the story of a game that went smoothly for six frames. Then came the seventh inning, when Bay's one-out double put an abrupt end to Wainwright's groove, and Xavier Nady and Jose Bautista each walked. Veteran Jason Michaels then pingh hit for Raul Chavez, a catcher batting just .217 on the season and 0-for-2 in Monday's contest. Michaels wasted little time by smoking the first pitch into the left-center field bullpen for his first career grand slam and Pittsburgh's first pinch-hit grand slam since 2003. St. Louis had built a 4-0 lead on the bats of Albert Pujols and Ryan Ludwick. Pujols' double plated Joe Mather and Ludwick's single scored Pujols in the first. In the third, the duo was at it again. Pujols' slow chopper plated Aaron Miles and Ludwick lofted a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Mather with the team's fourth run. The Cardinals will be in Washington tonight to face the Nationals at 5:50 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

The Kansas City Royals had the day off yesterday and will be in Chicago tonight to face the White Sox.

Graveside services for Peggy Briner of St. James, age 84, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis. All arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Chapel in St. James.

Private funeral services for Wayne L. Farho of Salem, age 55, will be held at a later date in Florida and services are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem.

Memorial services for Daniel Estel of Edgar Springs, formerly of California, age 56, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Rolla. All arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem.

Funeral services for John Katunar III of Rolla, formerly of Detroit, Michigan, age 59, will be held Thursday at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Rolla City Cemetery.

 Funeral services for Alta Bell Martin of Salem, age 91, will be held Friday at 11:00 at Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
