The Planning & Zoning Commission will conduct a public hearing and meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers located at 202 North Washington beginning at 6:30 to address a conditional use permit for 1300 West Scenic Rivers Blvd, owners the Sacred Heart Catholic Church for a radio tower. At 7:00 the City of Salem Board of Alderman will then conduct their regular meeting. After approval of the agenda, during the hearing of persons, Caleb Watts of the High School Chamber Choir would like to sponsor a 5K Run within the city limits. They would like permission to close selective streets on Saturday, July 19^th. This is a fundraiser to help the Chamber Choir raise $30,000 plus to attend an invitation to sing at Carnage Hall in New York City in April 2015. City Attorney William Camm Seay will then update the Board on the public hearing held prior to the meeting. In unfinished business, at the last Board meeting the local FFA requested permission to use the city’s shooting range. City Attorney Seay stated he was waiting for a written confirmation from the Salem R-80 School District regarding insurance coverage for the FFA students using the range. Jerry Craig, Chairman of the Planning & Zoning Commission, will report on the meeting held prior to the regular alderman meeting and the organization of the Planning & Zoning Board. City Administrator Ray Walden will then update the Board on happenings and projects and Mayor J.J. Tune will again address allowing public comment at Board of Alderman meetings on non-agenda items. Mayor Tune will then make his appointments to the Airport Board with the Alderman’s approval. In new and miscellaneous business, at the last meeting Mayor Tune appointed John Hambacker and Catherine Dent to the Utility Board and Alderman Whitaker as Chairman. This vote was not legal since the appointment to this committee was not on the agenda. Also noted that on May 5^th, Mayor Tune had appointed Alderwoman Zettel as the Chairman of the Utility Committee and there needs to be clarification as to who is recommended and approved by the Board. The Board may then vote to go into closed session. The public hearing and meeting of the Planning & Zoning Commission as well as the City of Salem Board of Alderman meeting are all open to the public.

An accident occurred at 11:22 Sunday morning in Phelps County that took the life of a Rolla man. According to the highway patrol report, 62-year old Kevin Brewer of Rolla was driving a 2014 Yamaha Bolt west on Route M when he failed to negotiate a hard curve, crossed the center of the roadway, ran off the left side of Route M onto County Road 6380, and he was ejected from the motorcycle and came to rest on the county road. Brewer was pronounced dead at the scene by Phelps County Coroner Larry Swinford at 12:33 and his body was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. He was wearing a safety device at the time of the accident. The Yamaha sustained moderate damage and was removed from the scene by Lucas Garage.

An accident occurred at 9:20 Saturday night in Crawford County on Highway YY about a mile west of Cook Station. According to the highway patrol report, 39-year old Charles Gratton of Hillsboro was driving a 2013 Polaris Ranger ATV when he traveled over an embankment, struck a tree, and overturned. An occupant on the ATV, 53-year old Steven Jordan of Cook Station, suffered serious injuries and was flown by Air Evac to Mercy in St. Louis. Neither individual was wearing a safety device at the time of the accident. The Polaris sustained moderate damage and was left at the scene.

In recognition of Ozark National Scenic Riverways 50^th Anniversary, middle and high schoolers around the region participated in a  poster contest. The submitted posters represented all aspects of the park’s unique natural and cultural resources and recreational opportunities. A panel of park judges, using established criteria, recently scored all the entries and the winners were determined. A Samsung Galaxy tablet was awarded to Molly Campbell of Ellington for her grand prize winning poster. Seraph Kunkel of Salem received a $75 gift card for her second place entry. The public is invited to view all of the poster contest entries currently on display in the Visitor Contact Station in Van Buren.

Tim Hudson tossed seven scoreless innings, Joaquin Arias went 3-for-4 with three RBI and the San Francisco Giants cruised past the St. Louis Cardinals, 8-0, in the finale of a four-game series. St. Louis starter Lance Lynn (6-3) allowed seven runs, four earned, on eight hits with four walks over 3 1/3 innings. The Cardinals will start a two-game series with the Kansas City Royals tonight at Busch Stadium. You can hear it on KSMO starting at 6:35.

The St. Louis Cardinals promoted prized prospect Oscar Taveras from Triple-A Memphis on Saturday. Taveras, a 21-year-old outfielder, took the roster spot of first baseman Matt Adams, who landed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left calf.

Mark Buerhle became the first MLB pitcher to reach 10 wins this season and the Toronto Blue Jays blanked the Kansas City Royals, 4-0. Jeremy Guthrie allowed two runs on eight hits and two walks over seven frames for the Royals, who have dropped six of their last eight tilts. The Royals and Cardinals start a series tonight.

The Kansas City Royals have recalled third baseman Mike Moustakas after a brief stay at Triple-A Omaha. The Royals needed to fill a roster spot because infielder Danny Valencia was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a muscle strain in his left hand. Kansas City also recalled Aaron Brooks from Triple-A Omaha to make his first major league start in Saturday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays, before optioning him back down the next day. The Royals also activated lefty pitcher Francisley Bueno off the 15-day disabled list, where he’s been since early April with a sprained left finger, and optioned infielder/outfielder Jimmy Paredes.

Funeral services for Nathan “Doug” Jones of St. Louis, formerly of Salem, age 65, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the Green Forest Cemetery in Salem. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral services for Lawrence “Bill” William Neumann of Steelville, age 98, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 to 8:00 with a Masonic Service at 7:00. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital.

Funeral services for Dewaine Nash of Salem, age 83, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be at the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the New Harmony Church.

Funeral services for Sarah I. Potter of O’Fallon, Illinois, formerly of Vichy, age 93, will be held Thursday at 1:0 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Walker Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Hospice of Southern Illinois.

Funeral services for Jessie Ernestine Hendricks of St. Louis, age 97, will be held Friday morning at 9:30 at the Lupton Chapel in University City.
