U.S. Senate candidate Roy Blunt visited Salem Tuesday morning as part of his “Jobs for Missouri’s Future” Campaign.  Blunt visited with about 30 residents from Dent County about ways to encourage small businesses to grow, expand, retain employees and hire new workers.  Blunt stated that working families are struggling in this terrible economy and we must start producing jobs right now. He talked about his plan to create jobs and economic growth that includes letting Missouri workers keep more of what they earn, economic incentives for small businesses and a government that gets out of the way so that businesses of all sizes can create self-sustaining and stable private sector jobs. After a short question and answer session, Blunt continued on the campaign trail to Reynolds, Ellington and Patterson.

An accident occurred at 4:00 early Monday morning in Dent County four miles south of Salem on Dent County Road 6150.  According to the highway patrol report, a 2005 Dodge Neon driven by 20-year old Amanda Hallman of Salem, was traveling southbound and lost control of the Dodge, then ran off the right side of the roadway and struck a fence.  Hallman sustained minor injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by ambulance.  The Dodge was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitakers Towing.

Intercounty Electric Cooperative’s Board of Directors has authorized the refund of $1.8 million in capital credits to the co-op’s member-owners in June 2010. Intercounty is a not-for-profit electric cooperative owned by those it serves. Capital credits are the cooperative’s margins or monies remaining at the end of the year after all the bills are paid. Capital credits are allocated to each member of the cooperative every year based on the participation in the cooperative. You will receive a capital credit refund check if you received service during 1994. If you move, please be sure to leave your forwarding address with them so they can send future capital credit checks to you.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving shoplifting, a traffic stop and property damage. On Friday, May 21st at 5:31 p.m. an officer was detailed to Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifter that ran from the store.  The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 23-year old Salem male of Salem for stealing and a 43- year old Salem female for disorderly conduct. The male suspect was issued a summons to appear in court and was released.  The female suspect was incarcerated and will be issued a summons to appear in court upon her release. At  9:54 p.m. that evening, an officer was dispatched to the 200 block of North Hickory in reference to damage to private property. The investigation of the report revealed that person or persons unknown cut two tires valued $80.00 each on a black 1997 Honda parked near a residence. On Sunday, May 23rd at 2:03 a.m. a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation that led to the arrest of a 23-year old Salem male for driving while intoxicated. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Monday, May 24th at 3:25 a.m. an officer was contacted at the station in reference to damage to private property. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 22-year old Salem male for damaging a taillight of a vehicle. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. An accident happened at 5:00 Monday evening on Highway 19 in Salem. According to the Salem Police report, a 1992 Dodge Dakota driven by Garrett Washburn of Salem was crossing the roadway at Roosevelt Street and Highway 19 and failed to yield the right of way, and entered into the path of a 1998 Dodge Neon driven by Dwayne Cossing of Salem. No injuries were reported and both vehicles received major damage. The Dodge Dakota was towed from the scene.

The Salem R-80 Board of Education will conduct a Special Meeting on Friday, June 4^th at the district administrative offices boardroom beginning at 5:30 pm. After approval of the agenda, the Board will vote to go into Executive Session to discuss personnel.
