The Dent County Extension Office is still working out of Salem TCRC in the Salem Freedom Activity Center for the time being due to flooding of the office.  The phones have been switched over, so the phone number remains the same for the office.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving property damage, theft and forgery. On Sunday, May 24th at 4:40 p.m. an officer was detailed to the 800 block of East Gibbs in reference to property damage.  The report revealed that a person or persons unknown cut two tires on a 1997 Ford F-150. The value of the damage is approximately $200.00.  On Tuesday, May 26th at 12:37 p.m. an officer was dispatched to the 1000 block of West Highway 32 in reference to a theft from a vehicle. The report revealed that a person or persons unknown entered a vehicle and took a purse. Further investigation led to the arrest of a 23-year old Salem female for the theft. She was incarcerated pending the application for a warrant as well as on a fugitive warrant from Phelps County Sheriffs Department. The purse and contents were recovered. On Wednesday, May 27th at 7:33 a.m. an officer was detailed to the City Garage on East Truman in reference to damage to city property. The report revealed that a person or persons unknown broke a window with a rock. The value of the damage is approximately $150.00. On Thursday, May 28th at 1:45 p.m. an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a forgery.  The report revealed that a person or persons unknown forged and cashed a payroll check for the amount of $257.12. Anyone with any information regarding the property damage reports, the theft or the forgery, which are still under investigation, is asked to please contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.

The “Yard of the Month” has returned this year according to the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce. If you know of someone who spends all their time in the yard and has this amazing array of beautiful flowers and perfectly manicured grass, you could be just the one we are looking for. This year there will be a June winner announced at the end of June and a July winner announced at the end of July. The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers beginning at 7:00 pm. At a previous meeting, Alderman Kenneth Nash suggested the City needs to hire an Electric Superintendent and Nash is requesting further discussion on that hiring. Alderman Jim Jackson, Kenneth Nash, Brad Nash and Jim McDaniels will discuss miscellaneous items involving the City. McDaniels would also like a report on storm cleanup, the airport, and would like to discuss the contracting of brush pickup and cleaning of waterways and an update on asphalting. Mayor Gary Brown will then address issues also involving the City of Salem. During the introduction and reading of bills, Bill #3165 an ordinance to authorize the Mayor to execute an agreement between the City and the Dent County Fall Festival for the leasing of the Commons for the annual 4th of July activities; and Bill #3166, an ordinance to authorize the Mayor to execute an agreement between the City and the Dent County Museum will be presented. In new and miscellaneous business, come July 1st, the City’s health insurance is to be renewed and the City did not go out on bids since it was bid out last year and state statues require every three years. The current health insurance plan shows an 11% increase in the monthly payment, and United Health Care has included two other options the City can elect to take and the Board will discuss the plan. After approval of bills presented by City Clerk Mary Happel, the Board will go into Executive Session. The regular meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.

An accident happened at 8:50 Sunday night in Phelps County on Route J about five miles south of Interstate 44 that left two people with serious injuries. According to the highway patrol report, a 2007 Harley Davidson Motorcycle driven by 42-year old Kurt D. Ross of Edgar Springs was traveling southbound when the motorcycle struck a deer in the road forcing it off the road, ejecting Ross and a passenger, 41-year old Kristie Ross of Edgar Springs. Kristie Ross was airlifted by Lifeline Helicopter to St. John’s Hospital in Springfield while Kurt Ross was taken by ambulance to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center in Rolla. The motorcycle sustained moderate damage and was removed by the owner.

 The Salem Tiger Baseball season came to an end Friday afternoon when Fulton erupted for an eight-run fifth inning en route to blanking Salem, 10-0 in five innings in state quarterfinal action. The Tigers could only muster one hit in the contest although they were given seven walks by lefthander Wilson Christenson. Salem ends their season with an impressive 20-3 record. Congratulations Tigers on a great season!!

Rich Aurilia picked a good time to belt his first home run of the season, breaking a tie game in the seventh inning with a leadoff blast to help give the Giants a 5-3 win over the Cardinals. Adam Wainwright (5-3) was touched for four runs on 10 hits in seven innings for St. Louis, which had won three straight series. Nick Stavinoha hit a two- run double in defeat. Albert Pujols and Brendan Ryan each finished with three hits for St. Louis. The Cardinals start a four game set with Cincinnati tonight at 6:55 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

Chris Getz had a two-run single as part of a three-run ninth inning that pushed the White Sox past the Royals, 7-4, helping Chicago complete the three-game sweep. David DeJesus ended with a pair of runs driven in for the Royals. Mitch Maier and Miguel Olivo had an RBI each in the setback. Zack Greinke, who came in 8-1 with a 0.84 ERA, went seven frames and yielded a season-high four runs -- three earned -- on eight hits with seven strikeouts. He saw his ERA rise to 1.10 after the no decision. John Bale took the loss for Kansas City. The Royals will have the day off today.

Funeral arrangements for Jeffrey Allen Leonard of St. Peters, age 40, will be held today at 1:00 in the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be held from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the New Hope Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral services for Viola Rose Agricola of Cuba, age 96 will be held Tuesday at 10:00 at the Britton-Bennett Chapel in Steelville. Visitation will be Monday from 4:00-8:00. Interment will be at the Memorial Park Cemetery in St. Louis.

Funeral services for Mary Lois Stotler of Washington, MO, age 79, will be held Tuesday, at noon at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be Tuesday morning from 11 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Graveside Services for J. Richene Emory Lanbach of Willow Springs, age 74, will be held on Saturday, June 13^th at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.

A Memorial Service for William J. Higginbotham of Rolla, age 72, will be held Saturday, June 20^th at 7:00 at the Central Community Church in Rolla. Memorials are suggested to the Central Community Church of God or the American Cancer Society. All the arrangement are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.

Funeral services for John Parker of St. James, age 81, are incomplete and under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
