The Dent County Sheriff’s Department conducted a vehicle stop at 12:55 Saturday morning on Highway 19 South of Salem. As a result of the investigation during the stop, taken into evidence were various items of drug paraphernalia, marijuana, Baggies, scales and 17 pills relating to a controlled substance. Taken into custody and charged with one felony count of possession of a controlled substance with the intent to produce or distribute, one felony count of possession of marijuana and one misdemeanor count for unlawful use of drug paraphernalia was 20-year old Jonathon Van Buren of Red Bud, Illinois. Bond was set at $20,000. A 19-year old male was issued a summons for possession of drug paraphernalia and an 18-year old male was issued a summons for possession of marijuana.

Captain Randy Becker, commanding officer of Troop I, Rolla, announces the Memorial Day Weekend traffic crash and enforcement totals for Troop I area, which consists of six counties in south central Missouri. The enforcement operations included All American Buckle-Up Week and the (C.A.R.E.) Combined Accident Reduction Effort. During the Memorial Day Weekend accident counting period, which began on Friday, May 25, 2007 and ended on Monday, May 28, 2007, Troop I officers investigated 20 traffic crashes, which resulted in nine injuries, but no fatalities. Troop I officers made six arrests for driving while intoxicated, issued 157 speeding citations, 86 seat belt summonses, and assisted 103 motorists. During the period covering May 21, 2007 through May 28, 2007, the Patrol participated in the “All American Buckle Up” campaign.  As a result of the campaign, Troop I officers issued 110 seat belt summonses and four citations for failure to properly secure a child in an approved child restraint seat. Captain Becker was pleased that for the third year in a row there was no fatal traffic crashes within the Troop I area over the Memorial Day weekend.

Representatives from Missouri’s hospitals recently traveled to Washington, D.C., to meet with members of Missouri’s congressional delegation to share their views on health care policy. Hospital leaders discussed their support for congressional reauthorization of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program and maintaining eligibility at 300 percent of the federal poverty level. The program provides insurance coverage for more than 73,000 Missouri children. In addition, the group thanked the congressional delegation for their work in opposition to onerous payment changes planned by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and urged continued vigilance in protecting hospitals from federal spending reductions in the Medicare and Medicaid programs. Among the leaders representing the hospital community were; Dennis Fiebelman, board member, and Dennis P. Pryor, administrator, Salem Memorial District Hospital. Fiebelman and Pryor met with Representative Jo Ann Emerson. The delegation of 36 hospital representatives was organized by the Missouri Hospital Association. It was comprised of hospital and health system executives, trustees, medical staff members, auxilians and MHA staff. The Missouri Hospital Association is a not-for-profit membership association in Jefferson City that represents 141 Missouri hospitals. In addition to representation and advocacy on behalf of its membership, the association offers continuing education programs on current health care topics and seeks to educate the public, as well as representatives about health care issues.

Free fishing days will be held June 9^th and 10^th, and all you will need those days on state waters is a fishing pole and bait. The Missouri Department of Conservation offers free fishing days the weekend after the first Monday in June, as a way of thanking citizens for their support, and to encourage people to get out and enjoy some of the states’ great fishing opportunities. All four of the Conservation’s trout parks will be free as well as rivers and streams, and the Missouri, Mississippi and Osage rivers.

Albert Pujols and Jim Edmonds homered on two straight pitches to highlight a five-run fifth inning, as the St. Louis Cardinals prevented the Colorado Rockies from attaining their first eight- game-winning streak in nearly 10 years with an 8-4 win at Coors Field. Scott Rolen finished 2-for-5 with two RBI for the Cardinals, who ended a three-game losing streak overall and seven in a row on the road. Edmonds finished 3-for-5 for St. Louis, which is just 3-11 away from home this month and has not lost eight straight on the road since 2001. Todd Wellemeyer (1-1) allowed three runs on seven hits with a walk and three strikeouts over five-plus frames in the first start of his major league career. Wellemeyer, who was claimed off waivers from the Kansas City Royals by the Cardinals, made 96 starts coming up through the Cubs' minor league system, but all 119 of his previous major league appearances had been in relief. The right-hander took the place of the winless Anthony Reyes, who was sent to the minors with the hopes of getting him back on track. The Cards and Rockies will play again tonight at 8:00 on KSMO.

The St. Louis Cardinals have placed catcher Yadier Molina on the 15-day disabled list because of a fractured wrist. Molina was hurt during the third inning of Tuesday's game against Colorado when he took a foul tip off the left wristThe injury was initially diagnosed as a bruise, but x-rays revealed a non- displaced fracture. He is expected to be sidelined for the next four-to-six weeks. Molina is batting .273 with one homer and 12 runs batted in this season. The Cardinals have purchased the contract of catcher Brian Esposito from Triple-A Memphis to fill the vacant roster spot. Esposito has never played in the majors and is a .219 hitter in 1,395 minor league at-bats.

Erik Bedard threw eight shutout innings and Nick Markakis belted a two-run homer in Baltimore's 3-0 win over Kansas City, as the Orioles swept the three-game series and sent the Royals to their season-high seventh straight defeat. Gil Meche (3-4) was the hard-luck loser after yielding just four hits and a run over 7 1/3 innings. He lost his third straight start. The Royals, who were held to four hits, were swept by Baltimore for the second time this season and have dropped 11 of the last 12 meetings. The Orioles have outscored Kansas City, 33-9, this season. The Royals head to Tampa Bay for the opener of a four-game set tonight.

Funeral services for Richard B. Gaines of Salem, age 86, will be today at 11:00 a.m. at the James & Gahr Chapel in Salem. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Funeral services for Shirley Sutphen of St. James, age 67, will be Friday at 11:00 a.m. at the James & Gahr Chapel in St. James.  Visitation will be this evening from 6:00 to 8:00.  Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
