The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Thursday morning in the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that Dent County Road 5600 would be graded and materials would be added. This work is under the National Forest Title 2 Project. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading would be done on Dent County Road 4330 and materials would be added to county roads 3050 and 3250.  He added that grader #32 was being brought in and would be serviced.  Larson went on to say that a culvert was being installed on county road 3050 and that a man would be screening brown rock at the shed if the material was dry enough. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that on Wednesday he attended the Central Region Workforce Investment Board Caucus Meeting in Columbia. He learned at the meeting that there are a number of summer job opportunities with the Department of Natural Resources. The jobs are for full time summer employment for youth ages 17-24 and include 7 jobs at Montauk and 2 at Dillard Mill. At 10:00 the Commissioners held a budget amendment hearing to reflect the $10,000 received and expended for the Missouri Department of Conservation white rock applied to roads leading to the MDC areas. The budget amendment hearing also included the $23,500 National Forest Title 2 Project funds received and expended for road improvements in the national forest.  Both of these merely reflect the offsetting in and out of funds. The amendment was approved 3-0. The next meeting of the Commission will be Monday at 9:00 in the Courthouse and it is open to the public.

An accident occurred at 5:28 Thursday evening on Interstate-44 inside the St. James city limits. According to the highway patrol report, 15-year old Dalton Courtway of Cuba ran northbound directly in the path of a 2010 Chevrolet truck driven west by 32-year old Skyler Hussey of Troy. Courtway suffered serious injuries and was flown by Lifeline’s helicopter to the University Hospital in Columbia.

The Salem Police Department has released more of their reports. On Monday, May 19^th at 9:38 in the morning, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that someone took a license plate off of a black 2007 Mitsubishi. On Tuesday, May 20^th at 10:28 in the morning, an officer made contact with a 26-year old Salem male in the 100 block of West Center who had an active arrest warrant from Probation and Parole. He was taken into custody and incarcerated pending a court appearance. That same morning at 11:58, an officer was detailed to the Crossroads Inn and Suites in reference to an intoxicated subject that refused to leave. That investigation led to the arrest of a 44-year old St. Louis male for trespassing. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. That afternoon at 1:00, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to an assault. The investigation revealed that a 17-year old Salem male had assaulted a 16-year old male juvenile at the Salem High School causing minor injuries. He was arrested, issued a summons to appear in court, and released. On Wednesday, May 21^st at 3:15 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to the Salem High School in reference to a student in possession of marijuana. The investigation led to the detention of a 16-year old female juvenile for possession of drug paraphernalia. She was released to her parent and the report will be forwarded to the juvenile office. That night at 11:37, an officer transported a 31-year old Salem male to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center in lieu of a mental commitment order. That same day, an officer was contacted in reference to a theft from a residence. It was revealed that someone took a freezer, valued at $150, from the yard of a residence in the 900 block of North Main. Anyone with any information regarding the thefts, which is still under investigation, is asked to contact the Salem Police Department at 729-4242.

Three Salem Baseball Tigers were named to the All-SCA Honorable Mention team. Those players were infielders Austin Wulff and Adam Ziske, and pitcher Kory Ramsey. Two players were named to the Class 4, District 9 District team and they were infielder Triston Dubois and pitcher Kory Ramsey.

Michael Morse smacked a go-ahead two-run double in the top of the eighth inning and the San Francisco Giants edged the St. Louis Cardinals, 6-5, in the opener of a four-game set. Allen Craig belted a solo homer among his two hits, two RBI and pair of runs scored for St. Louis, which has dropped three of its last four games. Jaime Garcia fanned seven, but gave up three runs on five hits over seven frames. The Cardinals and Giants play again tonight and you can hear it on KSMO Radio starting with the pre-game show at 6:40.

Edwin Encarnacion's historic month continued on Thursday with two more home runs, but the Toronto Blue Jays' nine-game winning streak was snapped by the slumping Kansas City Royals, 8-6, in 10 innings in the opener of a four-game set from Rogers Centre. An error by shortstop Jose Reyes with two outs in the ninth led to the game-tying run and the Royals scored twice in the 10^th off Todd Redmond to win it. All nine Royals starters had at least one hit as their four-game losing skid was halted. Salvador Perez hit a solo home run, Omar Infante drove in three runs and Alcides Escobar had three hits. The Royals and Blue Jays play again tonight at 6:00 at the Rogers Centre in Toronto.

Funeral services for Elizabeth Ilene Benton of Cook Station, age 93, will be held today at 4:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 2:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Carr Cemetery in Cook Station.

Funeral services for Lowell Anderson of Salem, age 87, will be held at 11:00 Saturday morning at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.  

Memorial services for “Mr. Mac” Stephen McBurnett, Sr. of Goodland, age 67, will be held Sunday at the Viburnum High School at 2:00. Memorials can be made to the Iron County C-4 School Track & Field. Arrangements under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.

Funeral services for Nathan Jones of St. Louis, formerly of Salem, age 65, will be held Monday morning at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Green Forest Cemetery in Salem. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral services for Lawrence “Bill” William Neumann of Steelville, age 98, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 to 8:00 with a Masonic Service at 7:00. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital.

Funeral services for Jessie Ernestine Hendricks of St. Louis, age 97, will be held Friday morning at 9:30 at the Lupton Chapel in University City. Visitation will be held Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00 at the Lupton Chapel. Interment will be private. Memorials may be made to the Union Avenue Christian Church of the PEO Chapter 0.
