A bridge replacement project on Route 32 over Spring Creek in Dent County is complete. The bridge, located in Salem, was recently opened to traffic. Work began in early May, and the Missouri Department of Transportation extends its thanks to motorists for their patience while the work took place. The bridge replacement is part of MoDOT’s Safe & Sound Bridge Improvement Program, which will improve 802 of Missouri’s worst bridges by the end of 2012. Currently, more than 720 of the bridges included in the program have been improved statewide. On Sunday, May 27th at 3:24 in the afternoon, the Dent County Sheriff's Office was contacted in reference to a dead colt. A Sheriff’s Deputy responded to the residence located on Highway 68 North. A family member stated that he came out to check on the horses around 1:00 that afternoon and noticed one of his grandfather’s colts was shot in the chest. Anyone with any information regarding the dead colt, which is still under investigation, is asked to contact the Dent County Sheriff’s Department by calling 729-3241.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving trespassing, active warrants, a transport in lieu of a mental commitment order, property damage and a shoplifter. On Wednesday, May 9th at 9:30, an officer made contact with a 31-year old Salem male, in the 800 block of North Pershing who had an active warrant from the City of Salem. He was taken into custody on the warrant and incarcerated. At 10:10 that same morning, an officer was detailed to Wal-Mart in reference to trespassing. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 68-year old Salem male for violating a no trespass order. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. That night at 10:20 pm, an officer made contact with a 31- year old Salem male in the 800 block of East Third who had an active warrant from the City of Salem. He was taken into custody on the warrant and incarcerated. That same night at 11:00, an officer transported a 25-year old Salem male to the Ozark Medical Center in West Plains, in lieu of a mental commitment order. On Thursday, May 10th 9:01 in the morning, an officer responded to a residence in the 700 block of South Pershing in reference to property damage. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown painted on the vinyl siding of a residence. The valued of the damage is approximately $800.00. Later that evening at 6:11 pm, an officer was detailed to Dollar General in reference to a shoplifter. That investigation led to the detention of a 16-year old female juvenile for stealing merchandise valued $10.00. The juvenile suspect was released to a parent and the report will be forwarded to the Juvenile Officer for further review. Anyone with any information regarding the property damage report, which is still under investigation, is asked to call the Salem Police Department at 729-4242.

Route AC in Reynolds County will be reduced as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs between Route 32 and end of state maintenance. Weather permitting work will take place now through Thursday, May 31st 7:30 am to 4:00 pm daily. Motorists are urged to use extreme caution while traveling near the area. The Mark Twain National Forest will offer two days of free day use and two free nights of camping at seven campgrounds June 8-10, 2012. Free camping is being offered in unreserved campsites both Friday and Saturday nights, and free day use is being offered at unreserved sites Saturday and Sunday, June 9-10, 2012. The free weekend is being offered in conjunction with National Get Outdoors Day and Missouri’s Free Fishing Days, which are celebrated on the Saturday and Sunday following the first Monday in June. The free use is available in these local campgrounds and associated recreation areas: Lane Spring in Phelps County; Loggers Lake in Shannon County; and Watercress on the Current River in Carter County. Missouri’s Free Fishing Days were established as a way to encourage people to try fishing so they can find out, or rediscover, the enjoyment associated with fishing.

Six Salem Baseball Tigers were named to the All-SCA teams for the 2012 season. Named to the All-SCA First Team were outfielders Brady Floyd and Andrew Conaway, while outfielder Kyle Lea and infielder Austin Bettigrew were named to the All-SCA Second Team. Infielder Jake Arzt and catcher Lane Stluka were named to the All-SCA Honorable Mention Team. Three Salem Tiger Players were named to the Class 3 District 10 All-District team and they were pitcher/outfielder Brady Floyd, outfielder Andrew Conaway and infielder Austin Bettigrew. Congratulations to these Tiger players on their achievements!

Home runs from Michael Bourn and Dan Uggla helped the Atlanta Braves earn a 5-4 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday. Yadier Molina went 4-for-4 with a home run and three RBI to carry the Cardinals and Jake Westbrook (4-4) was charged with five runs, four earned, on five hits and three walks over five innings. The Cards and Braves play again tonight and you can hear it on KSMO at 5:35. 

Mike Moustakas drove in a four runs to power the Kansas City Royals to an 8-2 win over the Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field. Alex Gordon and Johnny Giavotella both had two hits and an RBI for Kansas City, which has won three of four overall. Will Smith (1-1) earned the win by allowing two runs on four hits and struck out five over six frames. The Royals and Indians play again this afternoon.

Funeral services for Louis “Louie” Chapman of Edgar Springs, age 80, will be held this morning at 10:00 at the Fox Funeral Home in Licking. Interment will be in the Edgar Springs Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association.

Funeral services for Troy D. Galloway of Jadwin, age 47, will be this morning at 11:00 at the Salem Christian Church in Salem. Visitation will be from 10:30 until the service time at 11:00. Military Honors will be held at the church following the service. All arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.

Funeral services for Leonard Boyd Page of Ypsilanti, Michigan and formerly of Salem, age 83, will be held Thursday at the Salem Full Gospel Church. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 8:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Graveside services for Connie Nivens of Salem, age 69, will be held Saturday at 2:00 at the Empire Cemetery in Salem. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.
