The Salem Police Department reports several incidents in the city over the last few days. The first incident occurred on May 21^st at 5:55 a.m., when an officer was called to the 1600 block of Odom Drive in reference to an assault. The investigation revealed that a 24-year old male had assaulted a 34-year old male, both of Salem. The 24-year old was arrested and incarcerated pending the application of a warrant for domestic assault in the first degree. On May 22^nd, at 12:34 a.m., the police received a call for a peace disturbance at the 700 block of East Fourth. A 17-year old male and an 18-year old male were both arrested for minors in possession of intoxicants. Both suspects were issued a summons to appear in court and then released. On May 23^rd, at 1:15 a.m., a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation, and an investigation led to the arrest of a 24-year old male from Salem for driving while intoxicated. The suspect was issued a summons to appear in court and then released. That same day at 6:00 p.m. that evening, the Salem Police were called to the 300 block of East 10^th to the Western Cherokee establishment on a report of an assault. The investigation revealed an altercation had occurred at the establishment, and further investigation led to the arrest of a 48-year old male and a 50-year old male, both of Salem, for assault. Both suspects were issued summons to appear in court and then later released.  Anyone with information on these incidents is asked to contact the Salem Police Department at 729-4242.

On May 25^th, between 8:00 and 9:15 p.m., the Salem Police Department, along with the State Highway Patrol and the Dent County Sheriff’s Department conducted a driving while intoxicated checkpoint on Highway 19. As a result of the checkpoint, eight people were arrested. There was one arrest for driving while intoxicated, one arrest for possession of a hallucinogen and six arrests for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. The suspects were required to post bond and given a court date, or were incarcerated pending the application of warrants.

On May 26^th, the Salem Police Department made eight arrests during a traffic saturation patrol. There was one driving while intoxicated, one fugitive arrest, five arrests for possession of marijuana and one arrest for possession of amphetamine and marijuana. The suspects were incarcerated pending the application of warrants or released in lieu of bond. Those released were given a summons to appear in court.

The Salem Public Library Summer Reading Program entitled, “Get A Clue @ Your Library,” will be held on Tuesdays in June 5^th, 12^th, 19^th, and 26^th. Students having completed kindergarten and first grades will meet from 9:00 until 10:00 and grades 2, 3 and 4 will meet from 10:30 until 11:30. Daily activities will include stories, crafts and snacks. The program is open to all area students. There is no charge and library membership is not required for participation in this program. Parents/guardians are requested to personally register each child at the library, no phone registrations please. Go by the Salem Public Library to sign up your child for the Summer Reading Program entitled, “Get A Clue @ Your Library,” up by May 31^st. 

Senator Frank Barnitz congratulated several schools in the 16^th District on their Annual Performance Review. The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education gave the “Distinction in Performance Awards” schools receiving the honor. The Districts were judged on test scores and performance standards. School districts honored in our area include Bunker R-III, Dent-Phelps R-III, Green Forest R-II, and Oak Hill R-I.

Yorvit Torrealba's grand slam broke a tie and sent Colorado to an 8-3 win over St. Louis in the second installment of a four-game series at Coors Field. Brad Hawpe hit a two-run homer and scored two runs for the Rockies, who recorded their first seven-game win streak since Sept 6-12, 1998. Braden Looper (6-4) had a rough start for St. Louis, going 5 2/3 innings, allowing seven hits and six runs, walking five and fanning two. Scott Rolen was 3-for-4 with a solo home run for the Cardinals, losers in three straight and four of five. Jim Edmonds also homered and Albert Pujols knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly. The Cardinals and Rockies play again tonight at 8:00 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

Ramon Hernandez went 2-for-3 with two RBI to lead Baltimore to a 6-2 win over Kansas City in the second of three at Kauffman Stadium. Kevin Millar went deep and scored a pair of runs for the Orioles, who have won four straight. Mark Teahen hit a solo home run for the Royals, losers of six in a row. Shane Costa added another run with a sacrifice fly. Jorge De La Rosa (4-5) took the loss, allowing eight hits and five runs over five innings in the start for KC. Four relievers combined to hold the Orioles to one run for the remainder of the contest. The Orioles have won all five meetings this season, and have taken 14 of 17 over the Royals since the start of the 2005 campaign. The Royals and Orioles play again tonight.

Funeral services for Christopher Farris of Bunker, age 49, will be this morning at 10:00 a.m. at the McSpadden Funeral Home in Bunker. Interment will be in the Farris Cemetery in Bunker. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral services for Wayne Loren Martin of Rolla, age 91, will be held this morning at 10:00 a.m. at the Null & Son Funeral Home in Rolla.  Interment will be in the Mt. Herman Cemetery in Maples, MO.  Memorials are suggested to the Rolla Public Schools for the purchase of library books.

Funeral services for Richard B. Gaines of Salem, age 86, will be tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. at the James & Gahr Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 this evening. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.
