The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce has announced the winner of the “Yard of the Month” contest and for the month of May the winner is the home of Mr. And Mrs. Phil Newcom at 1203 Louise Street in Salem. The next contest will be held in June with the deadline for entries being June 24th. To enter your yard of some other yard, call the chamber office at 729-6900 or go by at 200 South Main Street.

Transportation improvements planned for Missouri roads over the next five years are now available in draft form for public comment. The draft of the Statewide Transportation Improvement Plan (STIP), which details work to be pursued in fiscal years 2009 through 2013 (July 1, 2008 through June 30, 2013), is available online at www.modot.org. Customers also may visit the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) South Central District Office, located at 910 Old Springfield Road, Willow Springs, Mo., to view a hard copy. Feedback is welcome during the formal public comment period, which ends June 27th. MoDOT customer service representatives are available to take comments or provide answers to questions. The MoDOT Customer Service Center may be reached by phone, toll-free, at 1-888-ASK MoDOT (275-6636). Projects across the state outlined in the STIP total $5.78 billion, with approximately $4.35 billion going to 662 highway and bridge projects, about $790 million to other transportation modes and approximately $640 million to local transportation programs. Projects are selected through a prioritization process, which partners MoDOT with state and regional planning partners. A total of 26 projects are listed in the South Central District section of the STIP. Highlights include these projects: resurfacing Interstate 44 eastbound from 0.6 mile west of Route H to the Franklin County line in Crawford County with the contract to be awarded in 2011; safety improvements on Highway 19 from Route PP to 2.5 miles south of Cuba in Crawford County with contract to be awarded in 2012; shoulder construction and partial relocation on Highway 32 from Dent County Road 605 to Route F in Dent County with the contract to be awarded in the winter of 2009; the resurfacing of Highway 63 from Cedar Street to south of Route CC in Rolla in Phelps County with the contract to be awarded in 2010; and the resurfacing and capacity improvements on Highway 21 from the Big River Bridge to ¾ miles south of the Highway 104 West junction in Washington County with the contract to be awarded in the winter of 2009.

The Ozark Natural & Cultural Resource Center is requesting photos showing events and happenings that occurred in Dent County during the 20th Century. The photos can be loaned to the Center for the month long exhibit, or provided for copies to be made with the originals being returned. Originals loaned should have the lender’s name and phone number on the back along with the description of the photo. Events could include festivals, canoe races, sporting events, pie suppers, and items of general interest. The management of the Center reserves the right to determine which photos are displayed. Photos will be accepted at both the ONCRC located at 202 South Main and the Salem TCRC located in the Salem Freedom Activity Center located at 1200 West Rolla Road, now through Friday, May 30th. Adam Wainwright allowed just one run over eight brilliant innings, as the St. Louis Cardinals topped the Houston Astros, 6-1, in the middle contest of a three-game series at Busch Stadium. Wainwright (5-2) surrendered just one walk and struck out eight as the Cardinals snapped a two-game losing streak. Yadier Molina and Cesar Izturis each drove in a pair of runs, while Brian Barton and Brendan Ryan each collected a pair of hits and scored a run. Kyle Lohse (4-2) takes the mound for the Redbirds against Roy Oswalt (4-4) in the series finale tonight starting at 6:55 on KSMO Radio.

The St. Louis Cardinals placed pitcher Joel Pineiro on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday. Pineiro, who also began the season on the DL, is suffering from a right groin strain and his current stint on the disabled list is retroactive to May 21. To replace Pineiro on the roster, the Cards recalled pitcher Kelvin Jimenez from Triple-A Memphis.

Craig Monroe hit a pinch-hit, game-tying three-run homer in the ninth inning, and Justin Morneau's solo shot in the 10th made the difference, as Minnesota stunned Kansas City with a 9-8 comeback win and extended the Royals' losing streak to 10 games. Kansas City starter Zack Greinke threw eight innings and gave up just three runs on five hits, while striking out eight. But Ramon Ramirez was touched for four runs in the ninth inning to ruin the outing, and Joel Peralta (0-2) picked up the loss after allowing the final two runs. Alex Gordon and Joey Gathright each had three hits and an RBI. The series finale pits the Twins' Kevin Slowey (1-4) against the Royals' Luke Hochevar (3-4)

Funeral services for Arbrey Allen (Jack) Redman of Licking, age 69, will be held today at noon at the St. John’s Hospital Chapel in Creve Coeur. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Visitation will also be held from 6:00 to 8:00 tonight at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Graveside services will be held Friday at 1:00 at the Green Forest Cemetery in Salem.

Memorial services for William Edward “Eddie” Johnson of Rolla, age 40, will be held this evening from 6:00 to 8:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. 

Funeral services for Francis W. Strubberg of Salem, age 60, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will also be Friday from 10:00 am until time of service. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.

Funeral services for Carol Ruth Camden of Lenox, age 72, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Assembly of God Church in Boss. Visitation will be Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery.

Funeral services for Mrs. Cleo Tucker of Salem, age 102, will be held Sunday at 1:30 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Saturday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.
