The Department of Natural Resources will conduct another public meeting about the Spring Creek watershed tonight at the Salem TCRC located at 1200 West Rolla Road beginning at 7:00 PM. At the April 26th meeting, the group discussed possible sources for the low dissolved oxygen in Spring Creek, including standing water and nutrients. One pertinent topic (as a source of nutrients) that was not explored was “on-site septic”.  Russell Lilly, of the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) will discuss that subject at this month’s meeting. Everyone is cordially invited to attend this public meeting. It is part of a series of meetings designed to allow residents of the Spring Creek watershed to identify and mitigate man-made impacts to the creek and its feeder creeks.  Please come and participate; we need your help.  Invite your friends and neighbors to come, too.  We look forward to seeing you at the meeting. An accident occurred at 1:30 Friday afternoon in Dent County on Highway 19 about seven miles south of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2002 Ford driven by 21-year old T.J. Scott of Anderson, Indiana, was traveling southbound on Highway 19. The Ford ran off the right side of the road at which time Scott overcorrected, lost control and then struck a tree. Scott suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. The Ford sustained extensive damage and was towed from the scene by Whitaker Towing of Salem.

An accident happened Friday evening around 6:45 in Phelps County on Highway 68 about two miles south of St. James. According to the Highway Patrol report, a 1993 Mazda Protégé driven by 33-year old Amy Barton of Salem, struck a 1999 Dodge Durango driven by 29-year old Amanda Dearduff of St. James who was slowing for stopped traffic. Barton suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center by the St. James Ambulance. Dearduff also suffered minor injuries but went to seek her own medical treatment.  Barton’s vehicle sustained extensive damage and was towed by C & C Towing of Rolla. Dearduff’s vehicle sustained moderate damage and was driven from the scene of the accident. Barton was cited for no insurance, failure to register the motor vehicle, and failure to wear a seatbelt. Dearduff was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident.

An accident happened Friday evening at about 7:25 in Dent County on Highway 32 about two miles west of Boss. According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2005 Dodge Neon driven by 25-year old Elaine Lewis of St. Louis, pulled to the right side of the road to stop, then slid down a steep embankment. Lewis suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. Lewis’s vehicle sustained minor damage and was removed from the scene by Knight Towing of Salem. Lewis was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident.

The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) will begin highway and bridge construction in the KSMO listening area as part of the 5-year plan to begin July 2007. In Crawford County MoDOT will begin an asphalt-overlay on Highway 8 about eight and half miles long from two miles east of Route 68 to a half-mile east of Highway 19 North, and is expected to cost $1,428,000. Also included in the 5-year plan in Dent County, MoDOT will begin an asphalt-overlay on Route B about twelve miles long from Highway 19 to Highway 72, and it is expected to cost $328,000, and on Highway 32, six miles of preparatory work and right of way purchases to allow for a partial relocation from County Road 605 to Route F and it is expected to cost $197,000. In the 5-year draft plan beginning July 2008, for Reynolds County, MoDOT has drafted a plan to perform pavement treatment from Route TT to Highway 72, on Route KK for about five and half miles with the project expected to cost $72,000. In Iron County, around the Bixby area, MoDOT has drafted a plan to perform pavement treatment on Highway 32 about six miles and it is expected to cost $92,000. Also in the draft, in Crawford County on Highway 19 about ten miles, rehabilitation bridge, shoulders and intersection improvements of Routes CC/F to I-44 in Cuba and this project involves a bridge over Prairie Creek and is expected to cost $1,990,000. In Dent County on Highway 32 for about six miles, MoDOT plans to construct partial shoulders and a partial relocation from County Road 605 to Route F and it is expected to cost $1,048,000.

Matt Holliday and Brad Hawpe homered for the Colorado Rockies, whose recent winning stretch carried over to Coors Field where the club kicked off a 10-game homestand with a 6-2 win in the first of four games against the St. Louis Cardinals. Colorado starter Jeff Francis (4-4) allowed two runs on five hits with three strikeouts and a walk over 7 2/3 innings. So Taguchi homered for the Cardinals, who dropped their second straight. Aaron Miles ended 2-for-4 and scored a run. Right-hander Kip Wells (2-9) absorbed the loss for St. Louis after having tasted victory for the first time in nine starts last time out. Wells is now on a personal five-game road losing streak after allowing six runs - five earned - on 11 hits with a walk and three strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings. Braden Looper will pitch for the Cardinals tonight as they face the Rockies at 8:00 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

Ramon Hernandez hit a grand slam and Steve Trachsel tossed a complete game to guide the Baltimore Orioles past the Kansas City Royals, 9-1, in the opener of a three-game set at Kauffman Stadium. Trachsel (4-3) scattered five hits over his strong outing while walking three for the Orioles, who have won three in a row. Scott Elarton (1-1) allowed seven runs on six hits over five frames for Kansas City, which has dropped five straight. Mike Sweeney knocked in his team's lone run. The Royals and Orioles will play again tonight.

Funeral services for Christopher Farris of Bunker, age 49, will be tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m. at the McSpadden Funeral Home in Bunker. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 this evening.  Interment will be in the Farris Cemetery in Bunker. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
