Salem wins Sectional!! Salem scored three times without the benefit of a hit and defeated Westminster Christian Academy by the score of 3-0 in the Class 3 Sectional at Westminster Wednesday afternoon. Salem will face Fulton Friday afternoon in the State Class 3 Quarterfinal in Salem at a time to be determined. More in the Sports section.

An accident occurred at 2:16 Tuesday afternoon at the intersection of Highway 32 and Warfel in Salem. According to the Salem Police report, a gray 2008 Chevy Trailblazer driven by John Elmer of Salem and a white 1999 GMC 2500 driven by Roy Steelman and owned by Fidelity Communications of Salem were westbound on highway 32 approaching a work zone ahead in heavy traffic. A maroon 2002 GMC Sierra driven by Walter Mackley Jr. of Salem stopped in traffic. The Chevy Trailblazer was unable to stop and made contact with the GMC 2500, which caused the GMC 2500 to make contact with the GMC Sierra. Elmer suffered minor injuries and sought his own treatment. The Chevy Trailblazer and GMC 2500 sustained moderate damage. The GMC Sierra sustained minor damage.

An accident happened Wednesday afternoon on Interstate 44 just west of St. James. According to the highway patrol report, a 2006 International driven eastbound by 50-year old Gerry Orand of Borger, Texas, was stopped in traffic due to an accident and was struck from behind by a 1988 Volvo driven by 33-year old Joseph Givens of Steelville who failed to stop. Givens suffered serious injuries and was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center by the Phelps County EMS. The Volvo was totaled and removed from the scene by C&C Towing, while the international sustained minor damage and was driven from the scene. Both drivers were wearing their seat restraints.

The Dent County Fire Protection District released their reports. On Wednesday, May 20th at 4:10 in the afternoon, the Dent County Fire Protection District was paged out to Dilworth and Franklin Streets in Salem to assist several agencies to locate and keep a calf from getting in the highway. The Dent County Fire Protection District assisted the Salem Memorial District Hospital with three different calls on Friday, May 22nd and two calls on Monday, May 25th. The Dent County Fire Protection District responded to a call on Tuesday morning to a dumpster fire on Dillworth Street in Salem. Upon arrival firefighters found nothing showing. Upon further investigation, there was little smoke or fire. The scene was under control at 11:41 am and six firefighters returned to the station.

An accident happened at Tuesday afternoon in Dent County at the intersection of Highway 32-72. According to the highway patrol report, a 2003 Chevrolet driven by 35-year old Aron Ford of Jadwin was stopped eastbound at a stop sign at the Highway 32-72 junction and was struck from behind by a 2008 Chevrolet van driven by 25-year old Roman Atchison of Mountain Grove. A passenger in the Chevrolet, 17-year old Christine Ford suffered minor injuries and was taken by the Salem EMS to the Salem Hospital. Both vehicles sustained minor damage and were driven from the scene.

Grant Gordon of Salem outpitched flamethrower Jacob Turner of Westminster as the Salem Tigers moved to the State Quarterfinal on Friday at Salem with a 3-0 win. Gordon gave up two hits and a walk to go with 12 strikeouts, while Turner surrendered three runs on two hits, five walks and a hit batsman. He struck out 13 in the game. Salem scored in the 5th inning when Andy Kisser struck out, but reached first on a passed ball. He went to second on a Ryan Smith groundout, went to third base on wild pitch and scored on Brandon Plank’s sacrifice fly. Salem added two more in the 7th inning with a walk to Aaron Shaw, Kissir was hit by a pitch, Ryan Smith sacrificed and Plank was walked intentionally. Then Turner walked C.J. Smith to walk in a run and after a pitching change, Grant Gordon walked to force in the third Tiger run. Salem is 20-2 on the year and will host Fulton who scored six runs in the 7th inning yesterday against Duchesne and won 7-6 in nine innings. The game will be played Friday afternoon at a time to be determined in Salem.

Jason LaRue drove in the go-ahead run in the sixth inning, and the Cardinals held on to beat the Brewers, 3-2, to take two of three at Miller Park. Todd Wellemeyer (5-4) continued St. Louis' string of solid pitching efforts, scattering two runs on six hits in 5 1/3 innings. Cardinals pitchers have given up just nine runs over the past nine games, seven resulting in wins. Nick Stavinoha drove in two runs for the victors. Ryan Franklin notched his 12th save of the year for the Red Birds who will have the day off today before traveling to San Francisco.

Placido Polanco went 2-for-5 with a homer and three RBI, as the Tigers took two of three at Kauffman Stadium behind an 8-3 decision over the Royals. Kyle Davies (2-4) was touched for eight runs -- five earned -- on 10 hits and a pair of walks for the Royals, who have lost three straight series. Mark Teahen homered during a 3-for-4 effort but committed a costly error in the setback. The Royals fell four games behind Detroit for first place in the AL Central. The Royals have the day off today.

Major League Baseball has s uspended Kansas City Royals manager Trey Hillman for one game for his actions in a May 25 game against the Detroit Tigers.

The Kansas City Chiefs have waived defensive end Brian Johnston.

Funeral services for Charles L. McCracken of Bunker, age 69, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the Stone Hill Cemetery.

Funeral services for Effie “Midge” Frost Grimm, of Rolla, age 101, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be Saturday morning from 9:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Ozark Memorial Gardens in Rolla. Memorials may be made to the Calvary Assembly of God Building Fund.

Funeral services for Dorella F. Beckett of Smithville, age 77, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Saturday morning from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
