Attention City of Salem Swimming Pool Patrons: In preparation of the upcoming swimming season city workers have ran into several problems that will delay the opening of City Pool that occurred over this past winter. As of Thursday, May 22^nd, parts and materials have been ordered to rectify the problem and city crews are working diligently so they might open in a timely manner. Unfortunately, the Parks and Recreation Department is looking at a week minimum before they will be able to move forward with their opening. They will announce an opening date when they know that will be for sure. In the meantime please call 729-6290 for questions, concerns, or updates. The Parks and Recreation Department apologizes for any inconveniences this may cause.

The Salem Police Department has released their reports. On Tuesday, May 13^th at 9:17 in the evening, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 200 block of South Pershing in reference to trespassing. That investigation revealed that a 50-year old Salem male, while in an intoxicated condition, had entered a residence without permission. He was taken into custody, issued a summons appear in court for trespassing, and released. On Wednesday, May 14^th at 11:07 in the morning, an officer, while attempting to serve a summons to appear in court in the 100 block of South Warfel, found a 34-year old Salem male to be in possession of marijuana. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Thursday, May 15^th at 12:53 in the early morning, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 300 block of East Truman in reference to a peace disturbance. The investigation revealed loud music coming from the residence. Further investigation led to a search that revealed a 24-year old male and a 19-year old female were in possession of marijuana and paraphernalia. Both were issued summons to appear in court and released. At 3:45 that afternoon, an officer located a 39-year old Salem male in the 100 block of South Jackson who had an active arrest warrant from Maries County. He was taken into custody and released with a court date after posting bond. That same afternoon at 3:51, an officer was detailed to a location near the 1100 block of South Louise in reference to an assault.  That investigation revealed that a 31-year old Salem female had assaulted a 21-year old Springfield male. He was arrested, issued a summons to appear in court, and released. On Friday, May 16^th at 4:59 in the early morning, an officer made contact with a 25-year old Salem male in the 100 block of South Jackson who had an active arrest warrant from Rolla. He was taken into custody and incarcerated pending a court appearance. On Saturday, May 17^th at 8:15 in the evening, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 800 block of South Askins in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that someone took tools, valued at $600, from a garage. On Sunday, May 18^th at 9:08 in the morning, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a burglary. That investigation revealed that someone entered a residence in the 100 block of East Third and took a Play Station 3 valued at $238. That afternoon at 2:53, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation led to the arrest of a 25-year old Salem male on an active arrest warrant from Viburnum. He was incarcerated pending extradition. Later that same afternoon at 4:53, an officer made contact with a 27-year old Salem male in the 1100 block of West Rolla. He had an active felony arrest warrant from Dent County was taken into custody and found to be in possession of marijuana. He was incarcerated pending the application for distribution of a controlled substance and a court appearance. Anyone with any information regarding the theft or burglary reports, which are still under investigation, is asked to please contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.

The Doe Run Company proudly marks its 150th anniversary this year by celebrating both the past and future. Throughout the spring and summer, Doe Run employees and volunteers will contrast the past with the present by showcasing the St. Joseph Shovel, a rare mining artifact, along with modern mining equipment in a number of community parades. Although the shovel is no longer in use, it is an instrumental part of Doe Run’s past. Originally built in 1922 by Doe Run’s predecessor the St. Joseph Lead Company, (St. Joe) the shovel was one of only 52 units ever produced. The first shovels were manufactured with support from the Thew Shovel Company, with St. Joe contributing most of the parts themselves. The shovel was modified numerous times based on the suggestions and needs of employees. A typical hand-shoveling employee could load about 21 tons of rock in one day. With the St. Joe Shovel, an operator was capable of loading nearly 300 tons. Mining ended in the Old Lead Belt in 1972, as did use of the St. Joe Shovel. As mining moved to the Viburnum Trend, the company decided to employ newer technology, and utilize more modern diesel loaders. Today, there is a St. Joe Shovel on display at the Missouri Mines State Historic Site in Park Hills, one at the Museum of Transport in St. Louis, and one at the Bonne Terre Mine and Bonne Terre City Park. Doe Run’s St. Joe Shovel is located at the Buick Mine and Mill in Boss, Missouri. The St. Joe Shovel will be on display at parades in Potosi, Bonne Terre, Herculaneum, Salem, and Bunker throughout the year.

Brian Roberts hit a go-ahead RBI single in a three-run 12th inning Monday that lifted the New York Yankees to a 6-4 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in the opener of a three-game series. The Memorial Day game marked the first meeting between the two fabled teams in nine years. Cardinals right-hander Michael Wacha, pitching five days after taking a foul ball of his elbow in the dugout, gave up four hits and three runs in seven innings. The Cards and Yankees play again tonight and you can hear it on KSMO Radio starting with the pre-game show at 6:40.

The St. Louis Cardinals placed left-handed pitcher Kevin Siegrist on the 15-day disabled list Saturday due to a left forearm strain. Siegrist, who leads the NL with 12 holds, is 1-1 with a 3.60 ERA over 20 innings so far this season. St. Louis recalled southpaw Sam Freeman from Triple-A Memphis to take Siegrist's roster spot.

George Springer had four hits and five runs scored as the Houston Astros handily defeated the Kansas City Royals, 9-2, in the first of three games. Lorenzo Cain went 4-for-4 with an RBI and Alex Gordon had two hits for Kansas City, which has dropped three of its last four. The Royals and Astros play again tonight.

The Kansas City Royals reinstated infielder Omar Infante from the 15-day disabled list on Monday. The 13-year veteran has batted .267 with two homers and 19 RBI over 30 games this season. The Royals optioned pitcher Casey Coleman to Omaha in a corresponding move.

Funeral services for Buell Naramore, age 92, of Ironton will be Wednesday at 11:00 am at the Rolla Chapel of James and Gahr Mortuary.  Visitation will be from 9:00 until time of service.

Graveside services for Alpha Bernice Mooney Johnson of Excelsior Springs, formerly of Salem, age 92, will be held Thursday at 2:00 at the Green Forest Cemetery. Arrangements under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.

Memorial services for “Mr. Mac” Stephen McBurnett, Sr. of Goodland, age 67, will be held Sunday, June 1^st at the Viburnum High School at 2:00. Memorials can be made to the Iron County C-4 School Track & Field. All arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
