Today is the final day to take advantage of the Men’s and Women’s Wellness Screenings at the Salem Memorial District Hospital from 6:00 to 9:00 this morning in the hospital library. For more information, call the hospital at 729-6626.
An accident happened at 8:40 Wednesday morning in Dent County on Highway 19 about a mile west of Sligo that took the life of a St. James woman. According to the highway patrol report, a 1991 Chevrolet pickup driven northbound by 15-year old David W. Banks of St. James, traveled off the right side of the roadway. Banks overcorrected and the Chevy then traveled off the left side of the roadway where the pickup struck a tree. Dent County Coroner Gina White pronounced 67-year old Flora Hayes dead at the scene and her body was taken to the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Banks suffered serious injuries and was transported by Air Evac Helicopter to Cardinal Glennon Hospital in St. Louis. Also suffering serious injuries were 40-year old Melissa Hayes of St. James and 44-year old Michael Ireland of St. Ann. They were both flown by Air Evac Helicopter to the St. Johns Hospital in Creve Coeur. No one in the vehicle was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevy was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing.
An accident happened Wednesday afternoon at 5:05 on Cameron Road in Texas County about two miles east of Licking that took the life of a 68-year old man from Licking. According to the highway patrol report, Roy L. Bailey of Licking was driving a 1986 Yamaha ATV southbound when he lost control on loose gravel and was ejected from the ATV. Texas County Coroner Tom Whittaker pronounced Bailey dead at the scene and his body was taken to the Fox Funeral Home in Licking. There was no damage to the ATV and it was removed from the scene by the family.
The first holiday weekend will soon arrive. Memorial Day weekend is an opportunity for Missourians to enjoy the many recreational possibilities in this great state. Whether you will be visiting family, going to one of Missouri’s lakes, or enjoying other travel destinations, the Missouri State Highway Patrol urges everyone to think about safety when making plans for the upcoming holiday weekend. Holidays should be enjoyed, but enjoyed responsibly. Be aware of construction along your route, pay attention while you are driving, and buckle up. If alcohol is part of your holiday, make sure driving is not. The Patrol will be participating in Operation C.A.R.E. (Combined Accident Reduction Effort) during the long holiday weekend. This means every available officer will be on the road enforcing traffic laws and assisting motorists. In addition, the Patrol will assign troopers to 10-mile intervals along Interstates 35, 44, 55, and 70, and U.S. Highways 60 and 61 on May 28, 2010 and May 31, 2010. Troopers taking part in this enforcement project will be alert for all traffic offenses, and be especially vigilant to aggressive driving violations. Motorists in need of assistance or who want to report a crime should use the Highway Patrol's Highway Emergency number 1-800-525-5555 or *55 on a cellular phone. For road condition reports, travelers can call 1-800-222-6400 to hear about road construction areas throughout the state. Over the 2009 Memorial Day holiday weekend, nine people died and 511 were injured in 1,268 traffic crashes. That is one person killed or injured every 9.0 minutes. Inattention, speeding, and failing to yield the right-of-way were the leading contributing factors to traffic crashes over the 2009 Memorial Day weekend. Motorists are encouraged to be safe and courteous drivers. This year's fatality counting period for the holiday weekend begins at 6:00 p.m., Friday, May 28
th, and ends at 11:59 p.m., Monday May 31
st. Troopers will focus their attention on seat belt use, use of child safety seats, intoxicated drivers, and speeding. Missouri is currently experiencing an 14 percent reduction in traffic deaths compared to the same time period last year. Motorists are encouraged to practice safe driving habits to help continue this trend.

Jerry Hairston Jr. hit a two-out solo homer in the bottom of the 13th to lift the San Diego Padres to a 2-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. Facing Mitchell Boggs (0-2), Skip Schumaker went 2-for-5 with two doubles and scored the only run for St. Louis. The game was scoreless into the eighth as the Cardinals' Jaime Garcia threw six scoreless innings giving up three hits and walking four before Kyle McClellan gave up a run in the 8th inning, but the Cardinals tied the game in the top of the ninth inning on a single by Ryan Ludwick. Matt Holliday went 0-for-6 for the Cardinals, while Albert Pujols went 0- for-4 in the game. The Cardinals and Padres finish out their series today at 5:15 on KSMO Radio.
Billy Butler went 2-for-4 with a solo homer, and Luke Hochevar tossed eight strong innings, as the Kansas City Royals earned a 5-2 win over the Texas Rangers in the finale of a brief two- game set at Kauffman Stadium. Willie Bloomquist added a double and knocked in two for the Royals, who snapped three-game slide. Hochevar (5-2) allowed two runs on six hits with four strikeouts and didn't issue a walk. It was the right-hander's second consecutive strong start. Joakim Soria pitched a perfect ninth to record his 11th save of the season and the 100th for his career. The Royals will start a four game series with Boston tonight.
The Salem Lady Tiger Softball Summer Camp will he held July 12th thru 15th and July 19th thru 22nd from 8:00 am to 11:00 am for girl's entering 9th through 12 grades and from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm for girl's entering 6th through 8th grades. The Salem Lady Tiger Softball Summer Camp will be held at the blue field next to the old armory, the cost is $20 per camper and each camper will receive a camp T-shirt. Anyone interested needs to call Coach Davison.

Funeral services for Michael Joseph Sankovitch of St. Louis, formerly of Salem, age 54, will be Friday morning at 9:45 at the Schrader Funeral Home and Crematory, 14960 Manchester Road in Ballwin, to the Holy Infant Catholic Church in Ballwin at 10:00 AM for Mass. Visitation will be Thursday from 4:00 to 9:00 at Schrader Funeral Home. Memorial masses will be offered at a later date in Salem, MO and Escanaba, MI. Contributions may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Society in Salem or Salem Soup Kitchen.
Funeral services for Eunice Emory of Jefferson City, age 90, will be held Friday morning at 11:00 at the First Church of God in St. James. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 7:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the First Church of God in St. James.
Funeral services for Ray Cooper of Licking, age 92, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the Rock Springs Baptist Church in licking. Visitation will be from 6:00 until 8:00 Friday evening. Interment will be in the Hutchason Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Bridge Builders or helping Hands Crisis Center. All arrangements are under the direction of the Fox Funeral Home in Licking.
Funeral services for Lester Jadwin of Salem, age 95, will be Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be Friday from 6:00 to 8:00. Internment will be held in the Jadwin Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Jadwin Cemetery.
