The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors held their regular monthly meeting Thursday night at the hospital library. For the month of April, the hospital had a gain from operations of over $100,000 and an excess of revenues over expenses of over $105,000 as outpatient registrations were a staggering 1,810, almost 500 more registrations than budgeted. The cash flow statement indicated that there was an increase in the cash account of $183,027 as days in accounts receivable dropped to 48 days. During the month of April, there were 780 emergency room visits with 54 of those patients being admitted to acute care, 80 emergency room transfers, 197 ambulance runs with 37 dry runs, 26 surgeries, 337 home health visits, 8,259 lab tests, 1,249 radiological procedures, 394 CT scans, 31 MRI scans, 41 nuclear med scans, 366 rehab treatments, 193 dialysis treatments and 466 clinical visits. Hospital Administrator Dennis Pryor reported that the National Hospital Week BBQ raised $1,500 for the auxiliary and they approved another $5,000 donation for additional TV’s in the patient rooms. The Auxiliary Garden Tour will be coming up on June 28^th. The board then approved Courtesy Staff Privileges to Guy Takahashi, MD; T. Martin Vollmar, MD; and Theodore M. Vollmar, MD at the request of the Chief of Staff.  Pryor did report that the Women’s Health Screening in May had 121 participants with 42 getting bone density tests. The men’s health screening will be held in August. The board then heard from the Finance Committee on the Market Assessment as well as the Operating and Capital Budget for Fiscal Year 2010. The committee anticipated only a 500 patient increase from the previous year budget, although registrations have already exceeded last year’s budgeted numbers. The committee did increase the amount of emergency room visits for FY 2010 year to 9,600 from last year’s budgeted figure of 9,000. They did calculated increases in salaries of 2%, retirement contribution of 4%, drug costs increases of 9% and a supply cost increase of 12%. With those increases in mind, the committee recommended raising the rate on a semi-private room $40 to $430, a private room from $500 to $550, raising the special care room rates $60 to $680, raising the swing bed charge from $220 to $240, and raising the ICF from $175 to $195. The committee also proposed raising the ancillary and outpatient services an average of seven to ten percent, and they propose to increase the Long Term Care rates from $105 per day to $115. For the Fiscal Year 2010, the Finance Committee expects there to be patient revenues of approximately $26,312,000 with Net Operating Revenues of $14,908,000 and a Gain from Operations of $325,000. The anticipated excess of revenues over expenses after taxes would be $797,000. They also went over the Capital Budget that showed total requests of $471,492. After the proposals and leases are taken from the combined tax revenue, there will be about $145,400 available for non-budgeted items. In New Business, the board then approved budgeted purchases of three wheelchairs from Medline for a total of $590, a video monitor for an Endoscope Tower from Ampronix Imaging for $3,654, the purchase of 32 Optiplex 360 Systems from Dell for $20,162, the purchase of 55 MS Office 2007 Professional software packages from Dell for $18,794, two information systems monitors from Dell for $278, a laser jet printer from PC Connection for $769, and the painting of 17 patient and acute care rooms from D. Roberts for $6,000. The non-budgeted purchases approved included a Midland LXT Two-Way Radio from Staples for $400, and five hygiene stations from Cardinal Healthcare for $1,103. The board then went into closed session.

An accident happened at 4:00 Tuesday morning in Dent County on Route N about two miles east of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2000 Ford Escort driven by 18-year old Laura Connell of Salem was traveling east on Route N. Connell fell asleep and the Ford traveled off the left side of the roadway then came back onto the roadway. Connell overcorrected, and the Ford again traveled off the left side of the roadway going through a fence, coming to rest in a wooded area. Connell suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by private conveyance. She was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Ford was totaled and removed from the scene Whitaker Towing of Salem.

The Salem Tigers Class 3 Sectional baseball game with Westminster yesterday was rained out and has been rescheduled for today at 4:00. The school is located on Ladue Road in St. Louis County about a mile and half east of Interstate 270 on the right side of the roadway. The cost of admission is $5.00. If you can’t make it to the game, you can hear it on KSMO Radio and online at ksmoradio.com. Salem enters the game with a 19-2 record, while Westminster comes into the game with a 20-7 record.

Adam Wainwright pitched seven innings of one-run ball and hit his fourth career home run, helping the St. Louis Cardinals to an 8-1 win over Milwaukee in an NL Central battle. Wainwright (5-2) took the win after allowing the one run on five hits and two walks, while striking out nine. Wainwright hit one of St. Louis' four homers, as the club also got one apiece from Colby Rasmus, Chris Duncan and Nick Stavinoha. The Cards and Brewers will play at noon today and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

The incomparable Zack Greinke tossed his league-leading fifth complete game of the season, and Mitch Maier drove in three runs, as the Royals defeated Detroit, 6-1, in the second test of a three-game series at Kauffman Stadium. Greinke (8-1) saw his earned run average spike to 0.84 after he gave up one run on six hits. The right-hander struck out eight and did not walk a batter. Jose Guillen finished 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI for Kansas City. The two teams wrap up their series today.

Cardinal’s first baseman Albert Pujols paced all players in first returns for the National League balloting for this year's All-Star Game, to be held July 14 in St. Louis. Pujols, a seven-time All-Star, has compiled 842,058 votes. The two-time NL MVP is well ahead of Milwaukee's Prince Fielder (427,284) and Philadelphia's Ryan Howard (294,830). Yadier Molina of the Cardinals paces all catchers with 451,368 votes, ahead of Milwaukee's Jason Kendall (383,773).

St. Louis Blues have re-signed center Jay McClement to a multi-year contract.
