The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors held their regular monthly meeting at the hospital library Thursday evening. Administrator Dennis Pryor reported that the summary of operations for the month of April showed an excess of revenues over expenses of $63,521 for the month with a year to date total of $800,854. Director of Nursing Carol Lacy gave statistics for the month and there were 751 emergency room visits, 155 ambulance runs with 26 dry runs, 29 surgeries, 449 clinical visits, 391 home health visits, 7,815 lab tests, 1,134 radiological procedures, 35 MRI scans, 252 CT Scans, 138 dialysis procedures visits, 381 rehab visits, 23 nuclear medical procedures and there were 1,575 outpatient registrations. Pryor said that the Hospital Auxiliary sold about 200 tickets for their Bar-B-Cue and won’t hold another fundraiser until the fall. Pryor reported that he and Joe Brand would be attending a Rural Hospital Conference in Washington, D.C. in June to visit with legislators. Pryor explained that the Insure Missouri initiative did not pass in the legislature and more than likely no new plan will be designed until a new Governor is elected. The board approved Courtesy Medical Staff privileges to Emergency Room Physician Bruce Berman, MD, and Emeka Ekeke, MD and radiologist Roger Tomihaka, MD. Administrator Pryor reported that the roof to Physician’s Office 3 is now half tar papered and and the other half is sheeted. He said Intercounty Electric will have to move an electric line before more work continues to ensure that the workers are safe. Total expenditures so far on the building are $584,755. The board made two minor adjustments to the proposed budget, adding $9,000 to ancillaries for the next year, and adding an additional $20,000 to the purchases for the housekeeping department for new scrubbers and buffers. They approved the amended budget that showed patient revenue of $26,824,000 with revenues over expenses of about $193,000. Pryor reported that over 100 women attended the Women’s Health Screening held in May and the Men’s Wellness Screening will be held on June 16^th, 17^th and 19^th that features a prostate test. He reported that the TeleHealth Network through the University of Missouri is still not operating as the T1 line has not yet been installed. Purchases for the month included a budgeted purchase of a 23 cubic foot Ice Cream Freezer for $3,301 from Cape Restaurant, and a non-budgeted purchase of a garbage disposal from Hobart for $1,299 for the dietary department. Other non-budgeted purchases include two Transcription work-stations for the Medical Records Department from Bytescribe for $825, a wheel chair for the Long-Term Care Unit for $152 dollars from Medline, a laser printer for the business office from CDW for $213, two computers for Long-term care and Dialysis for $468 from PC Connection, a hair dryer from Sally Beauty Supply for the Long Term Care Unit for $161, and a Dymo Disc Painter for CD’s and DVD’s from PC Connection for $349. The board approved all these purchases. Linda Knight, Director of Radiology, gave a presentation to the board for a new ultrasound and digital X-Ray machine. The current ultrasound machine lease ends in August, while the X-Ray machine is 35 years old.  She recommends that the hospital lease a new Toshiba Ultrasound with a service agreement of $63,900 and a price with interest at $127,181. The Toshiba X-Ray machine service agreement cost is $87,797 and the price of the machine with interest is $252,960. The total cost of both pieces came to $531,838 and the board approved the purchase. Knight said that the new X-Ray equipment would have to be installed and that might take up to 60 days to be completed with the reworking of the room and installation. The board then went into closed session.

An accident happened Monday morning at 9:50 on Dent County Road 6230 about a tenth of a mile west of Highway 72. According to the highway patrol report, a 2007 Suzuki Motorcycle driven by 47-year old Thomas Russell of Salem, struck a dog in the roadway and the motorcycle overturned onto its right side throwing Russell from the bike. Russell suffered serious injuries and was taken to the Salem memorial District Hospital by ambulance. He was cited for operating a motorcycle without proper license endorsement. The bike sustained moderate damages and was removed by a family member.

The Cardinals had a rare Memorial Day off yesterday after taking four of six on a west coast swing through San Diego and Los Angeles. The Red Birds will host the Houston Astros tonight to start a three game series at Busch Stadium starting at 6:55 on KSMO Radio.

Gregg Zaun and Marco Scutaro both homered as Toronto downed Kansas City, 7-2. Mark Teahen and Miguel Olivo each drove in a run for the reeling Royals, who have dropped eight straight. Brett Tomko (2-6) was touched for seven runs on eight hits in six innings en route to the loss. The Royals will host Minnesota starting tonight at Kaufmann Stadium.
