The 7^th Annual Ozarks Roots Festival, sponsored by the Salem Area Arts Council, commemorating Salem’s Civil War Sesquicentennial, will be held on Saturday, May 28^th. The Farmer’s Market at 200 South Main will be open from 8:00 to noon; a display of books focusing on the Civil War will be at the Salem Public Library located at 102 North Jackson from 10:00 until 1:00 pm. You can take tour of the Dent County Museum located at 400 North Pershing from 10:00 am to 2:00; or take wagon ride and listen to some music at the Dent County Fire Protection District located at #2 South Main Street. There will also be folk arts and crafts demonstrations and sales from 10:00 to 4:00; a performance by Cathy Barton and Dave Para with songs of Missouri and the Civil War from 12:00 to 12:45 and then again from 2:00 to 2:45, with bluegrass and gospel in between from 1:00 to 1:45; and there will be time for kids with Libby Sanders from 3:00 to 4:00. At the Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center located at 202 South Main you can learn about and explore the unique physical and cultural charm of the area from 9:00 am to 1:00; participate in the WING FLING where you can eat and vote for your favorite hot wings, with proceeds going to the Salem R-80 Arts Scholarship for arts education from 6:00 to 6:45 pm. Then at 7:00 pm that evening, Cathy Barton and Dave Para will have a jam session after intermission and everyone is welcome. Be sure and come out and enjoy the 7^th Annual Ozarks Roots Festival. The Missouri State Highway Patrol has released several arrest reports. On Thursday, May 19^th at 9:15 at night, 35-year old Jason Piatt of Salem was arrested in Phelps County for driving while intoxicated. He was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center and was later released. On Saturday, May 21^st at 5:18 in the evening, 49-year-old Roger Brown of Boss was arrested in Dent County for driving while intoxicated (persistent offender), driving while having his license revoked, for careless and imprudent driving, failure to register the motor vehicle, and no proof of insurance. He was taken to the Dent County Jail and was later released. On Tuesday, May 24^th at 10:19 at night, 58-year old Phillip Jarvis of Salem was arrested in Dent County for felony driving while intoxicated and driving while having his license revoked. He was taken to the Dent County Jail.

Memorial Day is the unofficial start to the boating season. During the 2010 Memorial Day holiday weekend, there were 14 boating accidents with eight injuries and zero fatalities. In addition, three people drowned over the holiday weekend. Officers arrested 36 people for boating while intoxicated. Boating is a great pastime and troopers want everyone to enjoy themselves. Please be courteous to others on the water, wear a lifejacket, and obey the law regarding safe operation of a vessel and no wake zones. Never operate a boat while intoxicated.

An accident occurred at 7:45 Wednesday morning in Phelps County on Route K about ten miles west of Edgar Springs. According to the highway patrol report, a 2002 Ford Mustang driven by 20-year old Ryan O’Neil of Licking ran off the left side of the roadway and struck a tree. O’Neil suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to the St. John’s Hospital in Springfield. He was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Mustang was totaled in the accident and was removed from the scene by Ron Dishman’s Towing.

An accident happened at 5:12 Wednesday afternoon in Crawford County on Route AA about three miles south of Steelville. According to the highway patrol report, a 1997 Chevy Blazer driven by 54-year old Jerry Holland of Davisville, was backing out of a private drive and failed to yield to a 1992 Dodge Spirit driven by 68-year old Jo Ann Orr of Steelville who was traveling southbound and the two vehicles collided. Orr suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan. Both Orr and Holland were wearing safety devices at the time of the accident. Both vehicles sustained extensive damages and were removed from the scene by Miles and Sons Towing.

Discover the wonders of the sky above us at a night sky-viewing program on Saturday, May 28^th at Onondaga Cave State Park near Leasburg. Sponsored by the East Missouri Dark Sky Organization and Missouri State Parks, the night will begin at 6:30 p.m. with the program “Viewable Objects in the Night Sky. Following the program, visitors are invited to look at distant objects in the night sky through telescopes provided by the East Missouri Dark Sky Organization.  This event is free and open to the public.  Reservations are not required. This program is the first of three night sky programs at the park, with future ones planned for August 27^th and September 24^th. The Salem Tiger doubles teams, Jonathan Hambacker/Matt Sirois and Steven Morton/Arthur Rekowski, will play in the State Tournament that will be held Friday at the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield. Good Luck Tigers!!

A stellar outing from Matt Latos and a two-run eighth inning allowed the San Diego Padres to avoid a sweep with a 3-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in the last of a three-game set from PETCO Park. The Cardinals wasted a strong effort from Chris Carpenter (1-5). In eight innings, Carpenter allowed three runs -- two earned -- on eight hits, while striking out six and walking none. Lance Berkman went 2-4 in the loss with an RBI. San Diego and St. Louis concluded the season series with a 3-3 split. The Cards will be off today.

Adam Jones singled in a pair to highlight an eight-run fourth inning, helping the Baltimore Orioles to a 9-2 rout of the Royals. Luke Hochevar (3-5) lasted seven innings, but was charged with eight hits and seven earned runs in defeat. Melky Cabrera clubbed a two-run homer in the fifth inning for Kansas City, which has lost four in a row and nine of its last 11 games. The Royal and Orioles will play this afternoon.
