The Health Screenings at the Salem Memeorial District Hospital are being held today, tomorow and Thursday. They begin at 6:00 AM and will end at 9:00 AM daily.

The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2440, 2470 and 5610 along with rock being hauled to 5610. Purcell also said that grading and ditch work would be done on Dent County Road 6380. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2220, 2620, 2630, 3170 and 3173, and rock would be hauled to Dent County Roads 4290 and 4300. Larson also reported that various cemetery roads throughout the district would be graded in preparation for the Memorial Day weekend and a truck would be picking up a load of cold mix in Cuba for chip and seal repairs. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he spoke with Darren Lingle of US Representative JoAnn Emerson’s office about the road closings along the Current and Jacks Fork rivers. Lingle said that he encourages everyone to write a letter with their concerns and mail it to Emerson’s office in Rolla at US Representative JoAnn Emerson, 1301 Kingshighway, Rolla, MO. 65401. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and that meeting is open to the public. 

The Governor and the Missouri Humanities Council honored Jerry Craig with a Governor’s Humanities Award on May 12^th for exemplary community achievement for his work with the Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center. Craig’s hometown of Salem has a rich history and distinctive character. In order to share the community’s unique heritage with both visitors and local residents, Craig and the Salem Area Community Betterment Association created the Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center. Craig, as the managing director, has helped the Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center evolve into a community resource providing hands-on workshops and free exhibits. “It’s a great accomplishment to see the development of the complex and a space that will be around for generations,” Craig said. Since the opening of the Center in 2005, it has hosted a diverse range of exhibitions including a traveling exhibit from the Smithsonian Institution entitled “Key Ingredients,” as well as various art and history shows. Among the other activities at the Center have been quilt exhibits, veteran’s appreciation events, nature presentations and an annual seasonal display of “Trees and Trains.” The awards ceremony honoring Craig took place at Stephens College in Columbia.

A total of $49,850 in scholarships from local companies and organizations was given out to 2010 Salem High School graduating seniors during graduation ceremonies on Friday, May 21^st. The big winner was Ty Floyd who was awarded the Chilton Oil Company Scholarship worth $1,000 and the Salem Wood Products/Larry Grove Memorial Scholarship worth $2,500 for four years ($10,000 in total). Other multiple scholarship winners included Caetlin Brantley receiving a total of $4,850 in scholarships (Salem Rotary Club, American Legion Auxiliary, Salem Area Computer User Group, SMDH Auxiliary, SMDH Employee, and Beta Club Scholarships); Michelle Smith was also awarded $4,250 (Cody McMurry, Country Mart, Dave Wynn Memorial, Salem Eagles, and SMDH Auxiliary Scholarships); Philip Moser received $4,000 (Salem FFA Alumni/Luther Blair Memorial and the 41^st Wisdom Award and Scholarship); Aytchie Jansen was awarded with $2,500 (Alumni Association, American Legion, and MFA Scholarships); Rachel Sirois received $2,250 (Alumni Association and Dorman L. Steelman Memorial Scholarship); and Christina Burke received the U.S. Food Service Scholarship worth $3,500 over a period of four years. Congratulations to all of the 2010 scholarship recipients and a special thank you to all the local companies and organizations for their support.

An accident happened Saturday morning in Phelps County on Phelps County Road 3120 about 2.5 miles west of Highway 8. According to the highway patrol report, 18-year old Morgaine E. Denison of St. James, driving a 2007 Chevrolet westbound, pulled out of a driveway and into the path of 1986 Chevy driven northbound by 24-year old James Flett of St. James. Denison suffered serious injuries and was transported by air by the Staff for Life to the University Hospital in Columbia. The 2007 Chevrolet was totaled in the accident and removed from the scene by Spurgeons, and the 1986 Chevy had only minor damage and was driven from the scene. Flett and Denison were both wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.

An accident happened Saturday afternoon at 4:20 in Phelps County on Route P about five miles south of Newburg. According to the highway patrol report, 36-year old Shane Ryerson of Cherryville was driving is 1994 Harley Davidson Sportster eastbound when he failed to negotiate a curve, traveled off the left side of the roadway and overturned, ejecting Ryerson into a ditch. Ryerson suffered moderate injuries and was flown to the St. Johns Hospital in Creve Coeur by the St. Johns Helicopter. The Sportster had extensive damage and was removed from the scene by a friend.

An accident happened in Shannon County about 17 miles north of Eminence Saturday night at 8:45. According to the highway patrol report, a 1991 Ford F-150 driven southbound by 41-year old Ronnie Pankey of Salem, slid off the right side of the roadway and struck a tree. Pankey suffered minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. Pankey was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Ford F-150 was totaled and was removed from the scene by Tyler’s Towing.

An accident happened in Phelps County five miles north of St. James Monday morning at 11:50. According to the highway patrol report, a 1994 Chevrolet driven by 16-year-old Kaylee Jackson of St. James was traveling southbound on county road 1130 and ran off the right side of the road and struck a ditch. Jackson suffered moderate injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. A passenger in the vehicle, 18-year-old Amanda Cummings suffered minor injuries and was also taken by ambulance to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. Both were not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet sustained extensive damage and was towed from the scene by Spurgeons Towing.
