The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. At the meeting, District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that preparation for chip and seal on Dent County Road 651 that leads to Cedar Grove is complete, but the road needs to settle before the chip and seal is added. Preparation for chip and seal on Dent County Roads 419 and 424A, which are cost share projects, is also complete. Simpson also said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 624, 626 and 628. District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that grading would be done on various roads in the Lecoma and Boss areas, and brush would be cut on Dent County Road 438. Tune also said that preparation continues for the one-mile extension of chip and seal on the Golf Course Road.  Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he would be attending a Spring Creek Watershed Meeting Tuesday at the Salem TCRC, and a Pandemic Flu Exercise Wednesday in St. James that is being sponsored by the MRPC as well as the Phelps and Maries County Health Departments. Skiles also wanted to remind everyone that the courthouse would be closed Monday in observance of Memorial Day.  The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00.

The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released their reports involving burglaries. On May 21^st at 8:00 in the morning, the Sheriff’s Department received a report of a burglary from a business located off of Highway 19 North of Salem. Reported taken were rolled quarters and dimes in the amount of $60, cigarettes, liquor, a VCR and a surveillance recorder. Entry was gained by removing bars from a window and breaking the lower half of the glass. On May 22^nd at 9:18 in the morning, the Sheriff’s Department received a report of a burglary from a business located off of Highway 19 South of Salem. Reported taken were one pair of Chukka boots and one pair of Justin work boots. Entry was gained by removing a storm pane and screen from a window. Both burglaries are still under investigation. Anyone with any information regarding these burglaries is asked to contact the Dent County Sheriff’s Department by calling 729-3241.

Whether you will be visiting family or going to one of Missouri’s lakes or other travel destinations, the Missouri State Highway Patrol urges everyone to think about safety when making plans for the holiday weekend. Be aware of construction along your route, pay attention while you are driving, and buckle up. The Patrol will be participating in Operation C.A.R.E. (Combined Accident Reduction Effort) during the long holiday weekend. This means every available officer will be on the road enforcing traffic laws and assisting motorists. Motorists in need of assistance or who want to report a crime should use the Highway Patrol's Highway Emergency number 1-800-525-5555 or *55 on a cellular phone. Last year, 12 people died and 591 were injured in 1,228 traffic crashes over the Memorial Day holiday weekend. That is one person killed or injured every 7.8 minutes. Inattention, speeding, and failing to yield the right-of-way were the leading contributing factors to traffic crashes over the 2006 Memorial Day weekend. This year's fatality counting period for the holiday weekend begins at 6:00 p.m. tonight and ends at 11:59 p.m., Monday May 28th. Troopers will focus their attention on seat belt use, use of child safety seats, drinking and driving, and speeding.

The 3^rd Annual Ozarks Roots Festival, sponsored by the Salem Area Arts Council, will be held today and Saturday. The Ozark Root Festival is a celebration of the people of the Ozarks, their heritage and their multi-culture. Today there will be a Smithsonian Exhibit, “Elements from the Front Range” from 9:00 until 1:00 at the Ozark Natural & Cultural Resource Center located at 202 South Main, a display of resources about the Western influence at the Salem Public Library from 10:00 until 5:00 and an evening of dance at the Salem City Hall Auditorium featuring the “Misfits” with Omar Veasman on the fiddle for square dances. On Saturday there will be events at the Farmers Market, the Salem Public Library, the Dent County Museum, the Bonebrake Center and the Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center as well as wagon rides going on all day long. All events are free and open to the public and will include fun and entertainment for the whole family.

The Salem Baseball Tigers placed five players on the SCA All-Conference teams selected this week. Named to the All-SCA Conference First Team were shortstop Grant Gordon and center fielder C.J. Smith, while pitcher Matt Whitaker and first basemen Brad Lewis were selected to the All-SCA Conference Second Team. Brandon Plank of the Tigers was named to the All-SCA Conference Honorable Mention Team to round out the selections. Congratulations Tigers!!!

Yadier Molina ripped an RBI double anddrove in another run, extending his hitting streak to 15 games while leadingthe St. Louis Cardinals to a 3-1 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates, completing a three-game sweep. Aaron Miles had three hits for the Cardinals, who had entered this series on a five-game losing streak. Braden Looper (6-3) held the Pirates to three hits and one run over six innings of work, while fanning two and walking a pair. Jason Isringhausen set the Pirates down in order in the ninth to earn his 12th save. Molina's hitting streak is the longest by a Cardinals catcher since 1993, when Erik Pappas had a 16-game hitting streak from May 14-June 5. This is the second time this season the Cardinals have swept the Pirates. St. Louis took three straight in Pittsburgh on April 9-11. The Cardinals will face the Washington Nationals this weekend starting tonight at 7:00 on KSMO.

Jason Michaels hit a three-run home run and Jeremy Sowers picked up his first win of the year with seven strong innings as Cleveland crushed Kansas City, 10-3, to avoid a three-game sweep. Esteban German went 4-for-5 with a run scored for the Royals, who had won eight of their last 10 games. Jorge De La Rosa (4-4) had a rough outing, yielding nine runs on six hits with seven walks in 4 1/3 innings.  The Royals will host Seattle this weekend.

Funeral services for Lilia Lea Elliott of Rolla, age 54, will be held today at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Interment will be in the Ozark Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Rolla.

Funeral services for Anna Mary Sherman of Rolla, age 76, will be held Saturday at 10:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.  Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 tonight.  Interment will be in the Ozark Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Rolla.  Memorials are suggested to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Funeral services for Neoma Osa Davis of Jadwin, age 88, will be held noon Monday at Wilson Mortuary. Visitation will be from 9:00 AM until service time. Interment will be in the Jadwin Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Jadwin Cemetery
