A ground-breaking ceremony was held Thursday afternoon at the Salem High School for the new construction approved by voters in the April election. Superintendent Steve Carvajal said that the entire project would be completed before the opening of school for the 2014-15 year. Work will begin within the next two weeks starting with the asbestos removal, removal of the trailers and site preparation followed by roofing work. The work will include security enhancements, roof repairs and replacement, energy efficient upgrades, rest room renovations and additions, indoor air quality improvements by replacing the HVAC units, new classrooms, new cafeteria and kitchen for the junior high and new common areas for both schools. McKinstry out of St. Louis will be the firm in charge of all the work to be done at the school.

The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams reported on CART receipts for May, which were up $1,730.35 from April, but down $181.42 when compared to May 2012.  Williams went on to say that the January to May receipts are down $2,234.32 when compared to 2012. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that brush was being cut on Dent County Road 6280, and that grading was being done on Dent County Roads 4220, 6190, and 6580. Purcell went on to say that one man was screening rock, that one man was hauling creek rock, and that truck #117 was being serviced. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading was being done on Dent County Roads 2540, 2550, 3260, 3273, and 3275, while brush was being cut on Dent County Road 3220. Larson also said that materials were being hauled to Dent County Roads 2550, 2540, and 5330, and that a crossover pipe was being installed on Dent County Road 5330. Larson also noted that he had received a bill in the amount of $97.25 from Great Rivers Associates for preliminary work on securing BRO funds from MoDOT for the bridge on Dent County Road 3210. Presiding Commissioner Darrel Skiles said that he attended the South Central Missouri Community Action Agency Board meeting in Winona Tuesday evening. The Board decided to cut one of the two Head Start programs in Shannon County, which will amount to $100,000 and when added to the previous cuts will total the $245,000 in cuts the Board had to achieve.  Skiles went on to say that it looks like the Dent County Headstart will not suffer any major reductions. On Wednesday, Skiles attended the Central Region Workforce Investment Caucus in Rolla. Skiles stated that in order to achieve the Caucus’ necessary cuts, the career centers in Mexico and Waynesville will be closed. On a positive note, Skiles said that the State Parks Youth Corps still has openings for 17 to 23 year-olds at Montauk, Dillard Mill and Onondaga Park, as well as other locations throughout the state.  For more information interested applicants should call the Rolla Career Center at 364-7030 and ask for the Youth Department and mention State Parks Youth Corps. Skiles also reminded residents that the Courthouse would be closed Monday in observance of Memorial Day. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley noted that absentee voting is continuing and that the Courthouse will be open Saturday June 1st from 8:00 until noon for absentee voting. The last day to mail out absentee ballots is Wednesday May 29^th. Curley went on to say that based on absentee voting to date, she expects a turn out of 20 to 25%.  Curley reminded residents that the budget amendment hearing for the Sheriffs’ Revolving Fund would be Thursday May 30^th at 10:00 in the morning. With the courthouse being closed on Monday the next meeting of the Commission will be Thursday at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

Today, May 24^th has been declared as Missouri Summer Weather Safety Day 2013. Missouri used to have a Summer Awareness Week, but changed it to one day and combined it with the National Weather Service National Heat Awareness Day that will be held today. Since Memorial Day weekend is considered the traditional start of the summer season, it seemed to make sense to just go along and match the national day. The National Weather Service, the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, and the State Emergency Management Agency have all joined together to promote Missouri Summer Safety Day. For more information visit the National Weather Service website at http://weather.gov/stlouis/?n.

Seven Salem Baseball Tigers were named to the All-SCA Conference Teams. Named to the All-SCA First Team were pitcher Brady Floyd, infielder Adam Ziske and outfielder Hunter Barnes. The All-SCA Second Team from Salem included catcher Lane Stluka and pitcher Skyler Johnson. Named the All-SCA Honorable Mention Team were infielders Jake Arzt and Austin Woolf. Congratulations Tigers!!!

Salem Tigers Baseball Coach Phillip Karr reports that two Salem Baseball Tigers were named to the Class 4, District 9 District Team. Those players were Lane Stluka and Brady Floyd.

The Cardinals had the day off Thursday and will start a three game series in Los Angeles tonight against the Dodgers. You can hear the game tonight on KSMO radio at 8:35.

Joe Blanton finally cracked the win column as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim held on for a 5-4 victory over the Kansas City Royals in the opener of a four-game series. Ervin Santana (3-4) served up four homers while being charged with five runs on eight hits in 7 2/3 frames. Salvador Perez finished with three hits and a run batted in for the Royals, losers in six of seven games. Kansas City will play L.A. again tonight and first pitch is set for 7:10.

Funeral services for Wanda Lee Todd of Boss, age 85, will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 at the Boss Assembly of God Church.
