The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors held their regular meeting Tuesday night at the hospital library. At the meeting, the board recognized former board members Leon Kreisler and Joe Hayes for their long service to the hospital with a gift from the board. Hospital Attorney Mark Weaver then swore in newly elected board member Ray Bruno before the board heard from Becky Swiney and Ken Sheriff who were in attendance to replace Joe Hayes who recently resigned his board position due to his relocation. Both Swiney and Sheriff spoke to the board and answered questions before the board took a ballot and elected Sheriff 4-0 to take the District #4 seat. Sheriff will serve on the board until the April election where he can then run to fulfill the unexpired term of Hayes. The board heard the summary of operations for the month of April and the hospital showed an excess of revenues over expenses of $32,561 and a gain from operations of over $27,000. The cash flow statement showed that there was an increase in cash of $162,780 for the month. Director of Nursing Carol Lacy reported that 65 acute care patients were admitted in April with 53 of those coming through the SMDH Emergency Room. There were 787 Emergency Room visits with 63 transfers. The turnaround time in the ER dropped to an average of 118 minutes, which is under the benchmark of 120 minutes. There were 189 ambulance runs with 189 patients assessed and 145 patients transported. During April, there were 35 surgery cases, 1,581 outpatient registrations, 123 Home Health visits, 7,981 lab tests, 957 radiological procedures, 157 CT scans, 21 MRI scans, six nuclear med scans, 1,718 cardiopulmonary procedures, 449 rehab treatments, 220 dialysis treatments and 350 clinical visits. Hospital Administrator Dennis Pryor said that the waiting room construction work is 50% completed and that the perimeter sidewalk is finished. Casey Lucas updated the board on the Electronic Medical Record conversion as more and more Meaningful Use Statistics requirements have been attained. The board approved the SMDH Foundation Program by-laws and work will start on that in the near future. Hospital Controller Stephanie Wofford gave the finance committee report in preparing the next fiscal year budget. After reviewing the market assessments, the board set the volume projects for the 2013 fiscal year including 20,000 outpatient registrations and 9,800 emergency room visits. Rate increases suggested by the finance committee for Acute care included a $20 increase in the cost of a private and semi-private room, a $30 increase for Special Care, and $10 increases for a swing bed, ICF, observation and telemetry. Ancillary and outpatient services will increase an average of 4% and Long-Term Care will increase $3.00 a day. In the budget, salaries increases were budgeted at 2%, retirement contributions were budgeted at a 4% increase, drug cost supplies increases were budgeted at 12% and the supply cost increase was expected to be at 7%. The board then approved the operating budget for the 2013 fiscal year that showed expected patient revenue at $35,995,000 with net operating revenue at $18,134,000 after deductions. The expected gain from operations in 2013 is $12,000 with an excess of revenues over expenses of $462,000 after taxes. The capital purchase budget is expected to be $367,750 with a number of major expenditures including $106,000 set aside for a new ambulance, $68,000 for a new Hematology analyzer, $25,000 for parking lot repair, $12,000 for a Baxter Dialysis Machine, and $11,000 for heating and air conditioning the ER waiting room. Pryor then announced that Stephanie Wofford would be resigning her position as Controller with the hospital effective June 8th. The board approved the budgeted purchase of 18 Long-Term Care Bedside Cabinets from Medline Industries for $4,170, All-In-One Printer for the lab for $362 from TigerDirect, and a terminal server for the Information Systems for $12,574. The board approved the non-budgeted purchase of two new Lane Recliners from South-Town Furniture for the Ambulance Room for $1,146 and two wheelchairs from Medline for $228 for Long-Term Care. The board then went into closed session.
Route AC in Dent and Reynolds County will be reduced to one lane as Missouri Department of Transportation crews partially overlay the roadway today from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, weather permitting. The section of roadway is located from Route 32 in Dent County to the end of state maintenance in Reynolds County. The work zone will be marked with signs. Carlos Beltran belted the tie-breaking two-run homer in the fifth inning and David Freese added a solo blast in the seventh, helping the Cardinals to a 6-3 win and the completion of a three-game sweep of the San Diego Padres. Freese knocked in two runs and Lance Lynn (7-1) gave up eight hits and three runs for the Cardinals, who had lost four in a row coming into this series. The Cardinals start a four-game series with the Phillies tonight at Busch Stadium and you can hear it on KSMO at 6:40.
Alex Rodriguez homered twice and drove in three runs as the New York Yankees dispatched Kansas City, 8-3, in the rubber match of a three-game series at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday. Billy Butler and Mitch Maier homered for the Royals, who have lost six of eight. In his major-league debut, Will Smith (0-1) was charged with six hits and five runs over 3 1/3 frames. The Royals have the day off.
The St. Louis Cardinals have placed infielder/ outfielder Matt Carpenter on the 15-day disabled list due to a right oblique strain and purchased the contract of catcher Steven Hill from Triple-A Memphis. The Cardinals have disabled five players in the past week, including Jon Jay, Allen Craig, Kyle McClellan, Lance Berkman, and Matt Carpenter and they currently have seven players on the disabled list.
