The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors held their regular monthly meeting Monday evening at the hospital library. Hospital Administrator Dennis Pryor stated that Salem is at the edge of the fan out area for Joplin and will provide help if requested. In the summary of operations for the month of April, Hospital Controller Stephanie Wofford reported that there was a gain from operations of $5,774 with excess of revenues over expenses after taxes of $12,501. For the year to date, the hospital has shown a loss from operations of over $163,000 with an excess of revenues over expenses after taxes of $261,917. In the Director of Nurses report, Carol Lacy reported that there were 781 emergency room visits for the month with 59 ER admissions to acute care. The turnaround time in the ER for April was 137 minutes. There was 179 total ambulance runs in April with 180 patients assessed, 132 transported and 47 dry runs. During the month, there were 30 surgeries, 1,614 outpatient registrations, 130 Home Health visits, 8,025 lab tests, 1,035 radiological procedures, 235 CT scans, 37 MRI scans, 11 nuclear med scans, 405 rehab treatments, 2,193 cardiopulmonary procedures, 236 dialysis treatments and 383 clinical visits. The hospital auxiliary raised $1,050 at the hospital week BBQ. Administrator Pryor reported on the state legislation that was enacted and not enacted. He also said that the hospital received a waiver from the Veteran’s Administration to continue to have the VA Clinic at the hospital without having to install a sprinkler system. Pryor said that a physician and his wife will be in town Wednesday and will visit the hospital on Thursday. An internist may visit in June or July. Kasey Lucas reported that a CPSI test server will be bought and installed in June and everything else is progressing as planned with the conversion to Electronic Medical Records. Director of Nursing Carol Lacy said that the Telehealth link with Missouri Baptist Medical Center would go online on June 3^rd. Administrator Pryor said that the contract for the hospital lagoon is now completed and they will be moving forward with that project. Pryor stated that the Board for the Council for a Healthy Dent County and the current Salem TCRC Board have approved the Council as a new managing partner beginning in November, and Pryor indicated that support for the TCRC was included in the upcoming budget for a minimum of one year to see how the new organization works. The board then approved the required Critical Access Hospital Annual Review for 2009-2010 fiscal years. The board agreed to the budgeted purchase of an amp meter, stepladder, battery charger booster, rotary hammer drill, thermoplastic welder, refrigerant recovery unit as well as a lamppost and light for maintenance. Also purchased were two desk chairs for the pharmacy, a stair chair for the ambulance, a power stretcher for EMS; three IV pumps, three wheelchairs and eight patient room TV’s for the ER, five lift slings and a four drawer dresser for long-term care, and an anesthesia delivery system for surgery. The total budgeted purchases were $72,406. Non-budgeted purchases approved included two new monitors, a fax machine and a laptop computer for a total of $1,862. From the 2012 fiscal year budget, the board approved the purchase of a Virtual Server System for information systems for $21,187. The board then went into closed session.

In Closed Session last Thursday evening, the Salem R-80 Board of Education hired Jon Johnson as the Assistant Junior High Principal; Devin Campbell as the Assistant Basketball Coach; Derrick Heflin as an Assistant Football Coach and Mitch Lundy as the Junior High Basketball Coach.

The Dent County Commissioners met Monday morning for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse. Dennis Hayman was in attendance to show the commissioners the new White River Trace Trail of Tears sign that will be placed in the historical monument on Highway 19 North. He said he would like to see another historical marker erected in Western Dent County as well. He also said that he went throughout the county to check on the grader blades that marked where the trail crossed Dent County Roads, and of the 65 blades originally installed, there were only about 21 or 22 left. He said that he thought it would take 72 different old blades to cover all the crossings, and the road and bridge department currently has about 50 available now that could be used. Hayman said that they would need the rust off them, be painted and include the trademark teardrop. He said he wanted to use community service people to help install the blades and left a letter with the judge to see if that is possible. He had a question on transporting the community services workers if there was more than one, but the commission felt that the judge would have an answer for him on that issue. If there were no community service workers available, he said that he would get volunteers to help. In the road reports, both districts were checking for downed trees and wind damages as there were reports of trees being down on Dent County Roads 2440 and 4210. The commissioners also said that they would be repairing road washouts. District Commissioner Gary Larson said that if weather allows, some chip and seal repairs would be made. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles wanted to send out condolences and prayers for those in Jasper County and the city of Joplin for the loss of life and the damage in that area from the weather. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and that meeting is open to the public.

The City of Salem Capital Improvement Committee will conduct a workshop, called by Director of Public Works Bill Huffman, today at the City Hall Council Chambers beginning at 3:00 pm to discuss the 2011/2012 budget. The workshop of the City of Salem Improvement Committee is open to the public.

Daniel Descalso drove in the winning run in the ninth as the St. Louis Cardinals opened a three-game set against the San Diego Padres with a 3-1 win. Albert Pujols hit his first home run in a month while Ryan Theriot added an RBI single in the ninth inning for the Cardinals who have won three straight games. Kyle Lohse (6-2) worked eight innings in the start to pick up the win as he gave up just one run and five hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Lohse, who lowered his earned run average to 2.06, is 3-3 in eight career starts against the Padres. Fernando Salas picked up his eighth save of the season. Kyle McClellan pitches for St. Louis tonight and will be opposed by Aaron Harang for San Diego starting at 8:30 on KSMO Radio.

The Kansas City Royals had the day off Monday and will be in Baltimore to face the Orioles tonight.

The St. Louis Cardinals placed catcher Gerald Laird on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured right index finger and optioned pitcher Mitchell Boggs to Triple-A Memphis on Monday. Filling the vacated roster spots are infielder Skip Schumaker and catcher Tony Cruz. The Cardinals also announced that pitcher Brian Broderick was returned from the Washington Nationals and assigned to Memphis. Broderick, who was selected by Washington in the Rule 5 draft last December, was 0-1 with a 6.57 ERA in 11 games with the Nationals.
