The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Thursday morning in the Dent County Courthouse. Dent County Collector Dennis Medlock dropped in to give the Commissioners a copy of the Dent County and City of Salem tax agreement proposal for their review. Medlock commented that the only changes from the previous agreement were the names of officials. In the road report District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2460, 2470, 4215, 5080, 5085 and 5015. He also said that materials would be added, grading would be done and ditch work would be done on county road 5600 and that this would be pretty extensive work and would take a number of days. Purcell went on to say that brush would be cut on county road 6180 if they could get the brush cutter to run and if not then patching would be done on chip an seal. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading would be done and materials added to Dent County Roads 4430 and 2500, while grading only would be done on county roads 6160, 6130 and 6140. Larson added that service would be done on truck #118, a man would be screening brown rock at the shed and that truck #110 would have brake work done. Both Commissioners Larson and Purcell said that their crews had worked on the roads accessing cemeteries in the county and had them in pretty good shape. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said he had good news about the State’s Assessment Reimbursement, which will remain at $3 per parcel and that the $3 reimbursement will also be allowed on the 2013 parcel count. Skiles noted that State Statute does allow up to $6 reimbursement, but the legislature set it at the $3 amount and had considered lowering it from that amount. Skiles reminded citizens that the Courthouse would be closed Monday in observance of Memorial Day. Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams was in to report that CART receipts for the month were $56,572.67, which makes the year to date total up by $11,361.46 from 2013. She also noted that this month’s receipts are up $6,331.71 when compared to last month. Skiles noted that both houses of the legislature passed bills exempting vehicles over 10 years old from sales tax. This will affect future CART receipts since they are generated by motor vehicle sales tax and fuel tax. Sandy Ogle of US Bank was in to get the contracts signed for the financing of the two new sheriff’s department vehicles. Dave Wells of ABS came in to check on the new scanner/copier/printer in the Commissioners’ office, plus install applicable software on the Commissioners’ laptops. Due to the Courthouse being closed for Memorial Day the next meeting of Commissioners will be Thursday in the Courthouse and it is open to the public.
Captain Lee Ann Kenley, commanding officer of Troop I, announces that during the Memorial Day weekend, Troop I officers will once again be participating in special enforcement operations with the objective of reducing traffic crashes. Throughout the weekend, troopers within Troop I and throughout the state will be participating in Operation C.A.R.E. (Combined Accident Reduction Effort). Additional enforcement projects include the statewide 20-Mile Trooper project and High Enforcement Contact Teams. Troop I's High Enforcement Contact Teams will be assigned to patrol secondary highways during the peak travel periods today and Monday, May 26th. The 20-Mile Trooper project consists of troopers maximizing visibility by being assigned to 20-mile stretches of Interstate 44. The troopers assigned to both projects will be tasked with vigorously enforcing all traffic laws and helping any motorist that needs assistance. All available troopers will be assigned regular patrol duties over the holiday weekend. This year's counting period will begin at 6:00 pm, Friday, May 23rd, and will run until 11:59 pm, Monday, May 26th. In support of “The Drive To Zero Highway Deaths,” the Patrol encourages motorists to protect themselves and their passengers by making sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint. Watercraft operators should ensure that everyone in the vessel is wearing an approved life jacket.
The Salem Area Arts Council will be hosting their monthly community acoustic jam at the Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center located at 202 South Main Street (Highway 19) this Saturday, May 24th beginning at 6:30 pm. Allen Craig drove in the go-ahead run with a double in the seventh and the St. Louis Cardinals completed a three-game sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks with a 4-2 victory on Thursday. Shane Robinson went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Craig and Jhonny Peralta both contributed two hits and a run scored for the Cardinals, who have won seven of their last eight. Pat Neshek (1-0) earned the win after allowing just one hit over two scoreless innings in relief of starter Lance Lynn, who surrendered two runs on seven hits with six strikeouts in six frames. The Cardinals will be in Cincinnati tonight to start a three-game series with the Reds. You can hear it on KSMO starting with the pre-game show at 5:35.
The Kansas City Royals had the day off yesterday, but will be in L.A. tonight to start a three-game series with the Angels. The Royals are 23-23 on the year and are 5½ games back of the Tigers for the lead in the AL Central.
The Kansas City Royals optioned struggling third baseman Mike Moustakas to Triple-A Omaha on Thursday. Moustakas is hitting just .152 with seven doubles, four homers and 17 RBI in 40 games this season. In a corresponding roster move, infielder/outfielder Jimmy Paredes will be recalled prior to today's game in Anaheim.

Funeral services for Michael Raymond Reynolds of Salem, age 57, will be held at 9:00 Saturday morning at the Salem Full Gospel Church. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00 at Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the Stone Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Michael Reynolds family.
Graveside services for Evadna Lee Heck of Houston, Texas, formerly of Vichy, age 93, will be held Saturday at 10:00 at the Walker Cemetery in Vichy. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 7:00 at James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Interment will be in the Walker Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Walker Cemetery.
Funeral services for Freddie Eugene “Gene” Pace of Salem, age 81, will be held Sunday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Saturday night from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Memorials may be made to Phelps County Hospice.
Memorial services for “Mr. Mac” Stephen McBurnett, Sr. of Goodland, age 67, will be held Sunday, June 1st at the Viburnum High School at 2:00. Memorials can be made to the Iron County C-4 School Track & Field. Arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
